How to Avoid Slow Play in Golf

OK, let me rephrase that headline: How to not hold others up on the golf course so you yourself can have a more enjoyable round.

See it’s not really about anyone else out on the course – it’s about you. I stopped trying to hustle through my round years ago and learned how to play at my own pace without annoying the group(s) behind me.

Now if it were up to me, I would take 5 or 6 hours to play 18 holes. Unfortunately, I don’t have my own personal golf course, so leisurely lollygagging down the fairway isn’t going to work when there’s a few foursomes backed up behind me. Don’t get me wrong, I still take my time – sometimes even up to 5 hours to finish 18-holes. But I’m rarely holding anyone up…

Here’s 3 reasons why:

1. I know which tee box I belong on
This is perhaps the most important thing golfers need to understand. Nothing gets me more frustrated than watching a group of clowns skulling, slicing and duffing their drives from the championship tees. Now I realize there’s a machismo thing going on here but if you can’t reach the damn fairway from the back tees, perhaps it might be a good idea to move up a bit? I also realize not all golf courses are the same – which is what a slope rating is for. Learn what a slope rating is and use it to decide how hard the course will be and subsequently which tee box you belong on. A good rule of thumb is if you can’t break 90 on a consistent basis, play from the forward tees (typically the “white” tees). Plus you’ll enjoy your round more since you’ll avoid the hazards that would come into play from the back tees.

2. I don’t mind bending the rules
For recreational golfers, the USGA rules are really more like guidelines than actual rules. In fact, I’ve written about how the USGA should come up with a simpler set of rules for non-tournament play. Learning which rules to bend will help you move along faster without actually having to hurry. For example, agree amongst your foursome that you can improve your lie (roll the ball over); or that any putt less than a foot is a gimme; or play “ready golf” instead of waiting for the farthest person away to hit (or instead of waiting on the tee for someone in the restroom just because they won the previous hole – if they need a bathroom break, then they tee-off last). Another time saver is to only look for lost balls for 2 minutes, instead of the USGA-allotted 5 minutes (think of it as your two-minute warning). Finally, don’t hesitate to “pick up” on a hole. A good rule is if you’ve reached 10 strokes but haven’t reached the green yet, it’s time to pick up and move on to the next hole.

3. I let faster groups play through
Letting others play through is sometimes a tough pill to swallow because many golfers don’t think (or realize) they are playing slow – so when the group behind is catching up, it’s easier to become annoyed than it is accommodating. But not me. As soon as I notice the group behind me getting close, I consider letting them go ahead of me. Now obviously if we’re right behind the group in front of us, then my group isn’t the problem. But if there’s an open hole ahead of us, it’s time to swallow our pride and let them through. Not only does it appease the group behind you, but it puts less stress on you and your group to play hastily (which will not only make your round more enjoyable, but will also allow you to play more relaxed and most likely better).

Remember, the aforementioned tips are not just so other people on the course can play faster, but also for your round to be more enjoyable. All you need to do is recognize that golf is supposed to be fun and that your score is secondary. Once you accept that, it’s easy to play from the right tee-box; bend some rules; and let others play through.

But I Want To Play 18 Holes!

September 22, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

thObviously, I like playing golf.  That goes without saying.  But there’s something about playing only nine holes that leaves me feeling unfulfilled.  Of, course, I’m going to play nine when I have the opportunity, and I’ll be satisfied doing so.  But there’s a big difference between being satisfied and being happy.

Just due to work schedules, family commitments and life in general…time and finances don’t often allow for eighteen holes much anymore.  It seems that years ago, playing only nine was almost unheard of unless it was last minute or late afternoon before dusk.  But now, it’s just the opposite.  Nine holes has become the norm and eighteen has been reserved for special occasions and the like.  Honestly, it’s almost sad.  So last weekend, when the invitation to play eighteen was extended, finances be damned…I’m playing!

I don’t know why I accept it.  I’m not interested in two quarters of football.  I don’t want a baseball game to end after five innings.  If I’m playing a pickup game of basketball to twenty, we don’t stop after eleven!  Is it because of how long it takes to play eighteen holes?  Really?  I just don’t want to accept that as an excuse anymore.  Can we really not find the five hours once every couple of weeks to fit in a full round?  It seems we as golfers need to work better on our time management skills.

Look, we’re being duped by our families or significant others – does your wife/girlfriend cut their pedicure or hair appointments short?  Tell her she can only get one hand done this weekend.  Or she can only get her hair washed and blow-dried, but not cut this time.  That’s going to have to wait until two weekends from now.  We’re being duped by our jobs – I’m sure your boss makes the time to cut out early on occasion, right?  I’m sure your boss doesn’t work on the weekends as often as you, right?  Well why not tell him, “I’m only going to put in four hours today.”  Or “Sure, I’ll work on the weekend, but only on one day…you do the other.”

I don’t know.  I just enjoyed playing eighteen for only the second time this year.  It’s just uncalled for and needs to change.  And you know what?  Golf season is only half the year.  The other half, we don’t play at all…not even nine!  So I’m going to push for eighteen holes for as much as is left of this season.  And next year, I’m going to push for it again.  It needs to happen.  I need it to happen.

Swing ’til you’re happy!

Sign Of The Times?

September 12, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

obama shhhLabor Day weekend has come and gone and with that we prepare for fall and winter. For most of us hacks in the Northeast that also means our golf season is winding down. Now is the time to enjoy the perfect golfing weather and get in a few last rounds before tucking away the ol’ sticks. There are many courses offering up some fall ball specials and we should take advantage of them.

We all deserve a break once in a while to shoot a round of golf, especially on a holiday weekend. Speaking of breaks, it seems as though President Obama couldn’t catch one this past Labor Day. Apparently, he was hoping to hack up one of Westchester’s (NY) high end tracks but they had other plans in mind. Mr. Obama was rejected by all courses including Winged Foot and Trump National.

This seems very strange, or does it? Obviously, if he was to play, it is required that the course shuts down and doesn’t let any members or guests play or even be there. Not a smart move financially especially on a holiday weekend. Another rumor being tossed around was how Obama has lost his star quality. With some of these uppity places, if you are not A-list, you are S-list…or S*** list.

It’s pretty much a given that he wasn’t getting a tee time at Trump National because well, Donald is not a fan of Obama. Actually, I take that back. Mr. Trump did offer the president free golf for the rest of his life but there’s a catch…he would have to resign, now. Oof! Times are a changin’…

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!

Is Being On The Tour Worth It?

September 5, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

expensivegolfAt some point in our career as a hack the thought of being a tour pro has presented itself. Let’s face it, we all dreamt about making our way down Augusta National, conquering Amen Corner and donning the green jacket. It’s only natural to dream but is a life on the tour all it’s cracked up to be?

Thanks to the media, we primarily only see the good s***. Who topped the money list or how much this person made on endorsements. Do they ever come out and say last year’s last place golfer made $6370 all year? If we take the average tour pro’s salary, it probably falls in the $800,000-900,000 range. Normally we would tend to believe it’s a pretty good living, no?

Here’s the reality, that number is an average. That means some, more like a few, are raking it in and a bunch are squeaking by. The bottom 35 fell under $50K for the year. A few seasons like that and you might want to entertain a career change. Between the cost of traveling and paying bills, that money disappears quick. For example, 2014’s #1 Rory McIlroy played in 15 events and made roughly $7.3 million. Edward Loar (#233) played in 19 events and earned $29,958 so far…ouch!

Not to mention, I didn’t factor in the time and effort put into honing their craft. It’s a gamble and takes a lot of balls to become a pro, no pun intended. The way I see it, us average joe’s have a pretty good deal. When we head out to the course it’s for fun and if we have a decent job we’re doing better than a good chunk of the pro’s who are trying to make a living on the links. Stinking at golf ain’t so bad…

Golf Needs A Human Touch

August 22, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

"2 Golfers" - photo by Greg D'Andrea; GolfStinks, LLC; Copyright 2013Over the last 20 years or so I’ve noticed technology has developed at exponential rates. Yes, that is an obvious statement but often overlooked. For example, I graduated from high school 20 years ago and I can recall only one person in my graduating class that had a cell phone. Things are pretty different these days, no? And that’s only 20 years ago.

Interaction between people is declining and everything has an app. You’re lost and need directions, there’s an app. You need to do some banking, there’s an app. You and your spouse want to have a baby, there’ an app. Ok, maybe not so much the baby but you get my point. However, it’s good to know that there are still activities we can do that actually involve human interaction. Golf being one.

When it comes to learning, playing or teaching golf, technology has it’s role but it is secondary. Although there are many companies out there that are selling or promoting some golf gadget to better our game, nothing beats human assistance. Golf is too complex for an app to tell you how to play better. Granted, there are apps to help with your golf game but there is a human at the other end giving advice.

For many, golf is something passed on from a family member or close friend. It is something we share with others. When we think of golf, we usually associate it with being on the course with our buddies. There’s more of an organic sentiment rather than a technological one. Let’s keep it that way.
