5 Indicators That You May Be A Golf Addict

November 29, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

golf brainWe all know of a golf fanatic or two. In fact, we might even be one. It’s perfectly normal to be passionate about golf. It’s a great game and for many becomes a life long hobby. As with everything, we know moderation is the key to a healthy balanced life…that includes golf.

Unfortunately, there are always those that take it too far. You know who I’m talking about. If you don’t know who I’m referring to that person might be you. So, I’ve put a few signs together that could help to see if you or someone you know is a golf addict. Here we go…

  • You can’t help but to sharpen all your pencils to roughly the length of your index finger.
  • You’ve considered golfing in a hurricane because “Man, that tailwind would add an easy 50 yards to my drive!”
  • You skipped out on family functions to get a round in and said you had to work.
  • Your work attire is golf attire and you’ve even wore golf shoes to the office.
  • You have a bumper sticker on your car that says “I’d rather be driving a (insert favorite driver brand)”.

Not to worry, you’re not alone. With a little counseling and support from loved ones we can have you back to the normal hack you once were. I know, I know; “How did I get to this point?” right? One day at a time. You’ll be ok.

Do We Need The Winter As A Break From Golf?

November 24, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

thLUKU0BZXToo much of a good thing.  We’ve all heard that expression.  But can golf be too much of a good thing?  Do we need that break from golf that the winter brings to us northern golfers?  I’m sure most of us would say no.  Most of us golfers would probably argue that they would prefer to golf year round with no break.  But for those of us who live up north, we are probably used to the time off and may use it productively or as that “break” we need from the sport we love.  Almost as if we need the time to miss it.

For instance, the idea of too much of a good thing can certainly mean that when you do something too often, it becomes more routine than enjoyable.  Is it possible to get golfed out?  Can you reach the point where you play golf too often that it could come to the point of no longer being as enjoyable as it once was?  Is it like having too much pizza?  Enter the golf off-season.  Take some time off.  Use the winter to work on a few things.  Give yourself something to look forward to…the next season.

Also, playing golf year round can get quite expensive.  The off-season break is also a break on your wallet.  Here in CT, you’re talking a good $45 or so on average for a round of golf.  Do that once a week and you’re shelling out roughly $900, give or take depending upon how long you can stretch the season based on the weather.  Now, for us golfers who are on somewhat of a budget (not all of us are rich, you know) $900 is not pocket change.  That $900 can be saved and in place, a few $10-$15 trips to the indoor range during the offseason can be had.

Look, I know I’m not fooling anyone.  If I could play golf more, I would.  We all probably would.  But I live in the northeast, and the reality here is there are four seasons – one of them is winter.  It can be brutally cold and the weather can be downright nasty.  There will be no golf at these times, no matter how bad we may want to play.  So I have to try to find the silver lining, right?

Golf, Stress & A Navy Seal

November 21, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

navy golfThere are countless people in this country that deal with stressful situations on a daily basis. Whether it’s work related (which probably makes up the majority), your significant other, family issues, your favorite team sucks whatever the case may be. It seems the more we try to avoid bringing stress into our lives the more it rears it’s ugly head. As a defense mechanism, we naturally react to stress in different ways to vent. Some better than others.

This brings up an interesting story. Robert O’Neill, the former U.S. Navy Seal known as the man who shot Osama Bin Laden, has had to make the transition from a highly trained spec-ops warfighter back to a normal civilian. Part of his transition included regular meetings with shrinks and at their suggestion take up activities to help with any PTSD. These activities included fishing and you guessed it – golf.

Now, I don’t know about you but when an ex-Seal says golf is more stressful than combat, you have to wonder. According to O’Neill, put a suppressed assault rifle in his hands, it’s all good, another day at the office. Give him a golf club and he loses his s***. In some odd way I can almost understand his point. Fighting has become second nature and he is in his “comfort zone”, as weird as that may sound.

Considering golf is a precision sport, the idea of using it to relax could backfire when you have a perfectionist trying to play for the first time. Here’s a man that has been to some of the most hostile war zones in the world and has successfully completed missions so dangerous that if he was caught the government would probably deny even knowing who this guy was. And golf is stressful?

Mr. O’Neill, I can’t thank you enough for your service and am glad you are on our side. If you’re ever in the Northeast and want to hack up a local track, it would be an honor.

The Quickest Trip From Tee to Green

November 10, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

As always, time and again one of the biggest complaints about the game of golf is the pace of play.  People are always looking for a way to speed the game up…and quite frankly, many players out on the course could certainly use a kick in the pants.  So whenever a new idea or innovation to speed up the game comes along, attention should be paid.  Even if it’s just a publicity stunt.  Enter Plum Quick Motors.

Already the holder of the world record for a 1/4-mile run by a golf cart at 103.65 miles per hour, Plum Quick set out on October 31st to break that record.  And break it they did by recording a 12.24 second run at 118.76 mile per hour.  That’s quick by regular street-car standards.  A golf cart?  Outrageous….obviously, or it wouldn’t be a world record.

So again, maybe if some speedier golf carts hit the links, all of our rounds could be moved through at a quicker pace. OK, OK….so maybe 118 miles per hour isn’t exactly realistic.  But if we dialed it down a notch to say, I don’t know, 40 miles per hour?  Maybe then we could…..wait a minute.  What am I saying?  The accidents this would lead to would only slow the game down further.  Oh well, it sounded like a good idea…

Life After Golf?

November 5, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

Recently, I was speaking with someone that said they quit golfing. I’m thinking “How do you quit golf?” The short answer, you don’t. Basically, golf has a beginning, an extremely long middle and no end. It’s a life long affair with some hiatus’ thrown into the mix.

There’s a 99% chance that the person I spoke with will find themselves back on the course. After discussing his “quitting”, the reasoning was based on frustration of poor play which is why I’m confident he will be playing again soon. Not to compare golf to drugs but, you see the point. Once you get a taste, it’s a wrap!

People take up golf for various reasons. Whether it’s something you picked up as a kid because our father, uncle, mother, older sibling or whoever introduced it to us or you have retired and need to do something. Whatever it may be, once we start it’s with us for the rest of our life. That’s a good thing!

What I’m trying to say here is there is no life after golf. Golf is a part of our lives. For many of us hacks out there, we shared a lot of good memories on the course and that alone will keep us coming back, not to mention the one great shot we keep replaying in our minds in an effort to hopefully do again and again. Not for nothing what would we do if we quit golf? I know, take up golf!
