3 Reasons You Stink at Golf

3 reasons you stink at golf
You stink at golf…and that’s OK! (Photo by Angela Gray / CC BY 2.0)

Let’s face it, you stink at golf. Most golfers accept this – especially those who can’t break 100. But even if you come close to par once in a while, you still kinda stink. I mean sure, a 10 handicap is a much better player than a 20 handicap, but in the bigger scheme of things, that’s kind of like splitting hairs, don’t you think?

Whether you’re a 10 handicap, a 15, a 20 or even a 5 – the reality is, you’re probably not going to make the pro tour anytime soon. Why? Because you stink at golf. Now I realize some of you might take umbrage with this, so here are a few reasons to prove my point…

#1: You Most Likely Don’t Play Enough.
How much do you think you’d need to play/practice golf in order to be really good? Once a week? Sorry, not gonna cut it. Honestly, most average golfers play just a handful of times per year – so playing once a week would be fairly frequent, generally speaking. But in reality, once a week falls well short of what’s needed. Most aspiring tour players practice a minimum of 6 hours a day (and that’s not including the time they’re actually playing a round). For most of us, this is simply unrealistic. But even if we could spend hours a day working on our game, we’d have to know what we’re doing – which means we’d need a good teacher, because…

#2: You Probably Learned to Play the Wrong Way.
Most average golfers learned to play from other average golfers – friends and family members who played. Thus, we were messed up from the beginning. When you finally do go see a pro, you find the learning curve is much greater – even employing the correct grip will feel so uncomfortable, you’ll probably revert back to your old, incorrect grip before long. Practice only makes perfect if you’re practicing correctly – maybe you should invest in a complete instructional program, like Bird Golf, which has some of the best golf schools out there. Or start reading how to become better, by checking out the Bird Golf blog. In any event, learning to play golf correctly and playing way more frequently are two big steps to playing better. But then again, there’s also the fact that…

#3: You Just Might Not Have the Raw Talent.
Lessons and practice will only get you so far. In the end, you’ll have to have a bit of talent somewhere within those bones of yours in order to be truly good at golf. Consider the difference between your local club pro and a player on tour. Both have practiced their butts off over the years; both have learned the proper mechanics; and both are scratch golfers. Yet most club pros couldn’t make it on the tour because the raw talent that guys like Rory and Tiger possess greatly exceeds the talent of your average zero handicapper. And talent isn’t just athletic ability either – in golf, controlling your mental game is a talent in and of itself. Pro tour golfers are excellent managers of the space between their ears and this might be the greatest separation between a tour player and a club pro.

So now that I’ve pointed out just how virtually impossible it is to be a really good golfer, where does that leave us? Well, for most of us, it leaves us right back where we started…a stinky golfer, which based on my logic above is anyone who scores over par (which is most everyone). But that’s OK! Because if you can accept your place in the golf world, then you are ready to put this “good golfer” stuff behind you and move forward with just playing this game for fun. After all, that is why you play, isn’t it?

Superstars & Models…Just What Golf Needs

Is Rory the future of golf? (photo by TourProGolfClubs [CC BY 2.0] via Flickr)
In a recent interview with Rory McIlroy, the question of whether or not he’s ready to be golf’s newest superstar was presented. Without skipping a beat, Mr. McIlroy said yes. Now, here’s the part where I’m kind of on the fence about. He also said he would be wasting his time if he didn’t and there was some other stuff in there about this is his destiny blah blah blah. But I’m having a hard time figuring out if it’s ego driven or modesty.

Is Mr. McIlroy the next fairway pharaoh? Time will tell and although Tiger is not in his best form right now he did set the bar pretty high. Rory has some pretty big shoes to fill. Remember that Tiger single handedly caused a spike in all things golf when he was on top (no pun intended). If Rory thinks he’s the answer well like I said before, time will tell.

Is Rory McIlroy what golf needs right now? Possibly. I’m thinking golf needs something that hits more of its core audience. Oh I don’t know, maybe something along the lines of say Sports Illustrated swimsuit models that golf. Wait…what? They do!! Come on, you can’t be serious…and they are. Serious about the game that is.

Looking at the facts, a majority of golfers are more prone to show interest in these models that golf than Rory…sorry buddy. Numbers and demographics don’t lie. Considering the majority of hacks out there are male, chances are they would rather watch SI swimsuit models Kelly Rohrbach (who happened to play golf at Georgetown University) and Hannah Davis tee it up then a 25 year old golf phenom dude.

Either way, the point is that golf is undergoing a transition and there seems to be more recent interest in the game by a younger group. So, Mr. McIlroy, I wish you all the luck on your quest to securing the throne and if any of the SI models happen to be in the northeast and want to golf, hit us up.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!

Baba Booey & Having Fun On The Course

It never fails, the gallery quiets down as (insert favorite tour pro here) sets up for his or her shot when from the crowd someones yells “Baba Booey!” Now, I’m not really sure when Gary Dell’Abate (aka Baba Booey) from the Howard Stern show became such a hot phrase to yell. And since we’re on the topic of yelling crap out at a golf tourney, we can put “mashed potatoes” in that category too.

Back to Mr. Booey, apparently it has ruffled some golf pro feathers. I personally think it’s hysterical, but I also could see why some of the older players on the tour get a little worked-up about it.  But when younger players are complaining, come on. Please remove the stick that has found its way up your bum and relax. The more you fight it the more it will present itself. However, I do agree with respecting the players and not yelling during a swing, but before or after…fair game in my book.

Last time I checked we live in a free country. Let’s enjoy the fact we have this luxury and have fun. Another great example is Rory McIlroy’s recent left handed shot. His drive off the tee box put him in some trouble and he had two choices 1) take your next shot from the water or 2) stay dry by inverting your club and swing lefty. By all means his left handed shot was terrible but he showed there is a  lighter side to some of the tight-assedness (yes, I just made that up) surrounding golf.

Good for you Rory and you too Baba Booey. Keep golf interesting, unpredictable and fun. You never know you might even attract some new fans. It’s no secret the slump golf is in since the post-Tiger era has started. Go ahead, be creative and yell some wild, zany s*** or take a chance and hit a nearly impossible shot. Just remember to respect the players and the game, it’s cool to be “the guy” just not “that guy”

Golf Could Use A Derek Jeter

September 26, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

Will golf ever have an ambassador like Derek Jeter?

As we bid farewell to the Yankee’s captain and think back about all his memorable moments, you can’t help but give this guy the respect he deserves. I don’t care if you are a die hard Boston Red Sox fan, there’s a spot for him in our hearts somewhere. Besides his storied career on the field, this future hall of famer has quite an impressive résumé off the field too!

Whether it’s his Turn 2 Foundation, his annual golf tournament or the countless hours and donations to charities, the dude is a class act through and through. With all the bad press baseball was getting for a while, Mr. Jeter was an ambassador of what’s good about the game or any sport for that matter. Now, when we look at golf (a sport traditionally considered a “gentleman’s” game), I can’t quite recall anybody in recent years that embodies the golden boy characteristics Jeter does. Tiger was sort of on his way but, well…we all know what happened there. Certainly no one from the U.S. comes to mind anyway – heck even betting sites aren’t giving the USA team a chance this weekend at the Ryder Cup.

But other than Americans, some might argue Rory McIlroy is in line to fill that role (which could very well happen hopefully). Time will certainly tell. Even so, and no offense to Mr. McIlroy, there’s that certain quality Jeter has that McIlroy hasn’t quite developed yet. Many call it the “It” factor, I think in the ol’ Capitan’s case it’s just being genuine. As simple as that sounds, being yourself isn’t always that easy. I mean, look what happens when John Daly is himself…ba dum…I’m only joking with you J.D.

Granted, a player like Jeter only comes around once or twice in a lifetime but for golf’s sake they sure could use one in this lifetime. As we speak, golf (along with our economy) is in a slump. If ever there was a time that golf needs a squeaky clean face, it’s now. You know what…f*** it, I volunteer to be that person! Oh wait…you have to be good at golf. Oh well, a hack can dream, right?

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!  Thanks for the memories Jeter!

Is Being On The Tour Worth It?

September 5, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

expensivegolfAt some point in our career as a hack the thought of being a tour pro has presented itself. Let’s face it, we all dreamt about making our way down Augusta National, conquering Amen Corner and donning the green jacket. It’s only natural to dream but is a life on the tour all it’s cracked up to be?

Thanks to the media, we primarily only see the good s***. Who topped the money list or how much this person made on endorsements. Do they ever come out and say last year’s last place golfer made $6370 all year? If we take the average tour pro’s salary, it probably falls in the $800,000-900,000 range. Normally we would tend to believe it’s a pretty good living, no?

Here’s the reality, that number is an average. That means some, more like a few, are raking it in and a bunch are squeaking by. The bottom 35 fell under $50K for the year. A few seasons like that and you might want to entertain a career change. Between the cost of traveling and paying bills, that money disappears quick. For example, 2014’s #1 Rory McIlroy played in 15 events and made roughly $7.3 million. Edward Loar (#233) played in 19 events and earned $29,958 so far…ouch!

Not to mention, I didn’t factor in the time and effort put into honing their craft. It’s a gamble and takes a lot of balls to become a pro, no pun intended. The way I see it, us average joe’s have a pretty good deal. When we head out to the course it’s for fun and if we have a decent job we’re doing better than a good chunk of the pro’s who are trying to make a living on the links. Stinking at golf ain’t so bad…

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!
