Chip Shots (Video): Ever Play Hallway Golf?

July 26, 2012 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

Lets say you’ve been looking forward all week to your round on Saturday morning.  You’ve blown off every other plan you have to hit the links with your buddies.  But Saturday comes and it’s pouring.

Or maybe you’re away on business or travelling for work.  You’re stuck in a hotel with no opportunity to get on the course during the day.

Better (or worse) yet, it’s January and you live in the northern part of the country.  No golf except at the indoor range for you over the next couple of months.

What to do now?  Well, it seems Jimmy Fallon just might have your answer.  Along with his playing partner, Chris Rock, Jimmy helps to find a great way to cure the off-the-course blues.  Oh, and the jabs at Tiger don’t hurt either.  Ladies and gentlemen…enjoy a few minutes of comedy while the guys play Hallway Golf!

Why I Would Never Play Golf With Tiger Woods

July 25, 2012 | By Greg D'Andrea | 1 Comment

Part of your profile page on Golfstinks.com is to list your dream foursome – who you would most want to play golf with. I’ve gotta say, many of you include Tiger Woods in your group.

I mean I get it, the guy is good and somewhat legendary now too. And despite his off-course licentiousness, he will probably still go down as one of the greatest golfers to ever walk the fairway.

But I wouldn’t play one round with him.

First things first – this has nothing to do with the fact that he’s a tremendouly better golfer than I am. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I stink, so it doesn’t matter to me if you’re a 2 handicap or scratch (or Tiger). I’m not intimidated…I just enjoy playing my own game.

The reason why I wouldn’t play golf with Tiger is he takes the game way too seriously. Now I know what you’re thinking: “But that’s his job – he needs to take it seriously.” Of course it’s his job and he should take it serious…but he doesn’t have to act like an ass.

For example, I’m watching The Open Championship this past weekend and he’s out there acting like a fool. Telling people who are 15 feet behind him to move further because their shadow might be in his peripheral vision. He’s dropping F-bombs on the tee; shouting “God Almighty” after hitting a shot into a bunker; getting pissed at himself for not living up to his expectations. What a bunch of stress that is.

He could be gracious, you know – Take things in stride. It shouldn’t matter that a bunch of money is on the line. So you hit one into the bunker, big deal – go get up an down. And guess what – he actually holed-out from that bunker – see, why did he get so upset in the first place?

I’ve posted about people like this before – those that get angry on the course and put a damper on things. Maybe Tiger isn’t affecting his playing partner’s game, but he’s on TV looking like a pompous ass riding his emotional roller coaster.

Those emotional displays can’t be good for people new to the game either. If I were a golf newbie, I would think: “Wow, if one of the world’s best gets that upset, I’m going to be miserable playing this game!”

But let’s get back to my original statement – that I wouldn’t play golf with him. I can understand those of you who would jump at the chance to tee-it-up with Tiger. Getting an opportunity to play with one of the best ever – that would be a story for the grandkids.

But my story to the grandkids would be a bit different. My story would be about getting out on the links and just enjoying yourself. As you take your clubs out of the trunk, remember to replace them with your stress, frustration and whatever else you might want to get off your back for the next few hours. Golf is a game – you should have fun playing it.

Chip Shots: Musings of a Stinky Golfer

July 24, 2012 | By Tom Treloar | Leave a Comment

All I want to do is hit the ball. But I feel like every shot is like taking the SATs. First you get your club and then you have to grip the club in your hand the correct way. Then you have to make sure your body is in alignment with your feet…don’t forget keep your head down! Next, start your backswing. Bring the club back, but not all the way back! Then start your forward swing and hope you hit the ball. Don’t forget to follow-through…

CRAP! Picked my head up. All I want to do is hit the ball.

Golf: A Love-Hate Thing.

July 20, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

In my last post and the one before, I referred to marketing and it’s use in golf. Continuing with that thought, I want to touch upon the actual significance of marketing to the golf community. Better yet, the importance of understanding our love for the game and sharing it with those who haven’t played.

It’s no secret that “word of mouth” is perhaps the best way of marketing something and I’m pretty sure most marketing gurus will agree. It’s simple; someone uses, participates in or buys a product, service or activity and then let’s their family and friends know the results. It’s not rocket science, there’s nothing complicated about that.

If I go to a restaurant and have a bad experience, my family and friends will know. The same goes with hotels, airlines, etc. In general, we are more inclined to tell others of our bad experiences rather than our good ones. Right? Well, just like every rule (theory, principle or whatever) there is an exception. And that exception happens to be golf.

No matter how bad my round was or how much I disliked a course, I found myself telling my buddies they need to get out there and play. Amazing, right? I stink at golf, mess up shots and curse every other hole (if not every hole) but insist everyone should give it a shot. In fact, my buddies who I introduced the game to still play the same courses we swore we would never play again…but so do I.

Personal experiences are subjective. We can agree to that, right?

Chip Shots: Savvy Marketing Or Have We Not Progressed?

July 19, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

I saw this ad in a magazine recently and wasn’t too sure how to take it. It kind of resembles those old advertisements where women were a bit exploited. For example, a famous brand vacuum cleaner ran an ad in the 50’s that said something along the lines of women who use this vacuum daily will keep the house clean and stay fit for their husband. Maybe they were going for the nostalgic approach?
