Back Pain and Golf

August 7, 2013 | By Greg D'Andrea | 2 Comments

back pain golfIt was the end of my senior year in high school. I was 17 years old and had never felt any back discomfort in my life whatsoever. But after golfing everyday for most of April, May and June for my high school golf team, along with practicing my chips and putts for many additional hours on top of that, something finally gave way.

I woke up one morning and literally couldn’t get out of bed. My lower back, right hip and a bit down my right leg were stiff and painful. I finally was able work myself into a sitting position and remember barely being able to walk to the car for my doctor’s appointment. One I reached the car, it was nearly impossible for me to sit inside!

According to the doc, it was my sciatic nerve acting up. He prescribed an anti-inflammatory and plenty of rest. Two weeks later, I felt back to 100 percent, but I wasn’t going to let that happen again. I began a stretching routine before each round, which I continue to this very day.

Fortunately, the issue has never cropped up again. Of course, I don’t play as much as back then, but that doesn’t mean I won’t ever run into problems. Now pushing 40, I realize I’m more susceptible to aches and pains – as well as easily aggravating old sore spots.

According to recent statistics, more than half of all male golfers (and nearly half of all female golfers) suffer some sort of lower back pain. If you play a second sport besides golf (like softball or even bowling), your chances for back pain increase by an additional 40 percent! And the risk goes up the older you get – especially for those over 50.

Want more bad news? Most recreational golfers (like many of us), work full time jobs where we sit at a desk for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. This puts us even more at risk for back problems! So what can we do to help avoid these lower back flare-ups (besides popping multiple doses of ibuprofen or acetaminophen or both)?

Well, according to this article from sportsmed.org, warming up before the round can lower your risk by more than half! Their study found that lower handicap golfers were also twice as likely to warm up for 10 minutes or more before each round (I warm up for probably 2-3 minutes)!

In addition to warming up before your round, it is strongly recommended you incorporate some sort of exercise program into your general life – especially one that helps strengthen your core, since a strong core can help stabilize you during a golf swing.

A few years ago, GolfDigest published this article specifically targeting exercise programs for golfers – and strengthening your core muscles was very important. According to the author, utilizing his golf exercise program three times per week will not only help rid you of pain, but also help improve your golf swing!

How about a massage? Did you know there were massages geared specifically for golfers? Not only that, the massage therapist actually massages you with…wait for it…golf balls! These types of massages, like the ones from SPABallMassage.com, make the following claims:

“Remarkably therapeutic, deeply relaxing, and essential to help golfers stay flexible and injury free. It combines smooth compression strokes with the therapist’s hands and forearms, deep trigger point and cross-fiber work with the SPAball Kaddy™ and golf ball, as well as performing essential stretches that every golfer needs to stay in top form.”

Now, I’ve never received one of these types of massages, but I’m definitely willing to give it a try! The bottom line is back pain is a reality for half of the golfers out there – and we weekend hacks are at even higher risk. At the very least, stretching before the round can help. But working in some sort of exercise – especially one that targets your core – can not only help you be pain free, but also can help your game to boot.

As always, check with your doctor before implementing any stretching or exercise routine. But in the end, staying healthy can allow you to play this game well past retirement age – I know that’s my goal!

Golf Stinks if your Grip Stinks

February 6, 2013 | By Greg D'Andrea | 2 Comments

PACKAGING1So one of the things we typically don’t do here at GolfStinks is give you swing advice. We’re not expert golfers, we’re golf connoisseurs – we love golf, even though we mostly stink at it! But every once in a while, we come across a product we feel can be of benefit to the average golf hack – and that’s what we believe we’ve found in Golf-Grip.

About 10 years ago, my golf swing was a mess and I took a lesson. The very first thing the pro corrected on me was my grip – and to help me train my mind on a producing a consistent grip every time I picked up a club, he had me practice with one of those weighted clubs with the molded grip.

Now I had seen those “practice” clubs before and always dismissed them as gimmicky – but once I started using the club, I realized just how wrong my old grip was. Around the same time I took the lesson, I was also reading Ben Hogan’s “Five Lessons” book – one of the most popular golf swing books of all time. I became convinced that my new grip was correct by the way my hands looked in the mirror when gripping the practice club – they looked exactly like the drawing of Hogan’s hands in the “grip” section of his book.

There may be other flaws in your swing – on the backswing or downswing or both, but you can’t even begin to address those issues unless you have the right grip to start with. And the good news is, you don’t need a lesson from a pro to begin fixing that grip.

Up until recently, you had to go out and spend $50 or more on one of those molded practice clubs. And while those clubs help train you on the proper grip, switching back to your real clubs always felt a bit different. In my case, my real club’s grips were thinner than the practice club, so I had a harder time transitioning my newly corrected grip over to my actual clubs. And that’s the cool thing about the Golf-Grip. It not only trains you both physically and mentally to produce a consistent and, more importantly, correct grip, but it’s also made to fit on your clubs. Just line it up with your club head and snap it on.

Seeing as it’s snowing outside as I type this, now’s the perfect time for me to take a few practice swings in the house. And to keep fresh in my mind the proper grip technique, I snapped my Golf-Grip onto my 60-degree wedge and began gearing-up for the new season. Not bad for only 23 bucks!

OK, so now that I basically sound like a freaking infomercial, I’m gonna tell you how to get a Golf-Grip for FREE! As always, whenever we review a product, we ask the manufacturer to send us two – one for us to test out, and one for us to giveaway to one of you! All you have to do is head on over to our Facebook page and “Like” the post on our wall entitled: “Golf Stinks if your Grip Stinks Giveaway!” That’s it – We’ll choose one random winner later in the week!

Good Luck and get practicing – only 43 more days till spring!

Chip Shots: Musings of a Stinky Golfer

July 24, 2012 | By Tom Treloar | Leave a Comment

All I want to do is hit the ball. But I feel like every shot is like taking the SATs. First you get your club and then you have to grip the club in your hand the correct way. Then you have to make sure your body is in alignment with your feet…don’t forget keep your head down! Next, start your backswing. Bring the club back, but not all the way back! Then start your forward swing and hope you hit the ball. Don’t forget to follow-through…

CRAP! Picked my head up. All I want to do is hit the ball.

How Golf Gimmicks Really Work

March 30, 2011 | By Greg D'Andrea | 3 Comments

A little over a week ago, Stinky Golfer Chris posted about purchasing his first golf gimmick. Chris joked in the headline; “I bought my first golf gimmick…or did I?” – suggesting he wasn’t really sure if he had just bought a gimmick or not.

That’s the thing with gimmicks – you’re never really sure if they will work. Did you just shave strokes off your game or were you just the next sucker? After all, they say there’s one born every minute.

In any event, we posted Chris’ story on all of our social media sites with the caption; “Can this golf gimmick actually work?” That elicited a decent amount of responses, including those who were certain Chris got screwed; and those who were equally certain the product worked. But perhaps the most intriguing answer was: “It will work if you want it to.”

Think about that for a second. “It will work if you want it to.” I don’t know about you, but this provided me one of those “ah-ha!” moments. For me, reading that statement put the whole golf gimmick thing in perspective. Sure, the person who left that comment was probably suggesting mind-over-matter (e.g. if you truly believe something will work, it will).

But beyond convincing yourself that it will work, all the gimmick needs to do is focus you on the task at hand – in this case, improving your golf game. The rest comes down to how much time you want to spend practicing. Let me give you an example: Let’s say you buy a golf gadget that trains you to move the club along the correct swing path. Regardless of what feature the gadget uses to get you on the right path, it inevitably forces you to focus on your swing. And the more you focus, logic dictates the better you will become.

So in this sense, weeks of practicing with any golf gimmick will probably help you be more consistent – but it’s not the gimmick that’s doing the trick, rather it’s the practicing. It makes sense: The more you believe in a product, the more you will practice to get the desired results. But if you suspect you’ve bought a gimmick, you will cease practicing fairly quickly and proclaim the product a bunch of BS.

We can apply this theory to most golf gimmicks: Wanting to believe it works leads to more practice, which ultimately leads to better results. But what about in the case of Stinky Golfer Chris’ gimmick? He purchased one of those hologram balance bracelets…how do you “practice” with that? I guess he would just have to wear it and see if it works. And here again, it may be mind-over-matter: If you believe it works, it will.

So Chris will be wearing his bracelet out on the course in a few weeks to see if he was one of the 525,600 suckers born in 1974. And seeing as I was also born in that year; and seeing as I also purchased one of those bracelets…there may very well be two suckers on the tee that day.

Here’s to impulse decisions and mind-over-matter!
