Golf…Under The Tuscan Sun

July 3, 2015 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

golf tuscanyNow that summer is here we can focus on the important stuff – golf and vacation! Whether it’s a trip to the shore for a couple days or to the other side of the world, the good news is that there’s probably a  course  not that far away. As golf has developed and grown in popularity you would surprised as to where you would find a golf course.

A few months ago I had the opportunity to travel to Italy for a couple weeks and wouldn’t you know it, I actually saw a couple golf courses. It’s not something I would normally think when in the Florence area. You know, the statue of David, the Duomo, the Tuscan Hills …Golf Club Toscana Il Pelagone. What a great golf holiday!

Now, here’s another little something to think about when doing a little golf travel in Italy: The 19th hole. Man, that has got to be some of the best food you will ever come across at a club house. The heck with the hot dog and soda, I’ll take the Bistecca Fiorentina (an oversized aged porterhouse) paired with a nice glass of Brunello…fuhgeddaboutit!

That’s it, time to save up for another trip. And by the way, to all us hacks out there, you don’t have to be good to play good courses, anywhere.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!

Golfing…Nude?

March 5, 2015 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

Every once in a while I like to search the web for interesting or weird golf related stories. It never ceases to amaze me what I’ll actually stumble across. Just when I think I have heard it all, another story surfaces that leaves me shaking my head in disbelief. It’s not like we associate excitement with golf…or should we?

So, this is for all of you hacks out there that are bored with your local track and are looking for something different. Maybe you need to get away for a bit. A little change of scenery, perhaps a taste of different cultures. You know, a golf vacation. I got the perfect place for you to go and leave everything else behind…including your clothes.

Fore...I mean TWO!
Fore…I mean TWO!

You heard right. At La Jenny Resort in Le Porge, France golfing nude is obligatory, as well as tennis, swimming and…umm…pony riding. Let me tell you, you haven’t lived until you’ve ridden a pony in your birthday suit. The only thing that kind of weirds me out a bit is that they promote this “naturist” resort as family friendly.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me but there is something odd about a family playing doubles tennis naked. However, it is France and as we all know the Europeans have a much more liberal stance on this sort of stuff. As the saying goes, when in Rome…or Le Porge.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!

Is Golfing at Disney World Worth It?

November 12, 2014 | By Greg D'Andrea | 1 Comment

Stinky Golfer Greg at Disney’s Palm Golf Course

You’ve planned for months; figured out all the logistics; got the flights, hotel and transportation squared-away; and prepped the kids. You’ve even spent time booking fast passes for all the best rides ahead of time. Walt Disney World, here you come!

Now just one thing remains in the back of your mind – should you try and play golf while you’re there? I mean, you might be able to sneak-out early one morning and squeeze in a round. But would it be worth the effort? After all, there’s a few championship courses right in Disney. You could tee-off around 7 or 8 and be meeting-up with the rest of the family for lunch in the Magic Kingdom by noon.

Well, about a week and a half ago, I did just that. My wife and I plus the two kids were in Orlando on a 4-day trip to Walt Disney World. And, being that the golf season was pretty much over up here in the northeast, I decided to play golf one of the mornings down in balmy Florida (not to mention the Disney World courses looked pretty good on the website).

After looking over all the options, I decided to play Disney’s Palm Golf Course – mainly because it was just remodeled last year. In addition, it’s operated by Arnold Palmer Golf Management and received a 4-star rating by Golf Digest. Plus greens fees are the same at all the courses – $100 (which includes a cart). Of course having to pack all the gear for the kiddies meant it was too much of a hassle to drag my clubs along too…so, I had to rent at the course, which added another $50 to my fees. So I knew going in this would be at least a $150 investment.

With an 8:04 tee-time, I planned to meet my family around noon at the Magic Kingdom. I arrived at the clubhouse (which serves for both the Palm and Magnolia courses) around 7:30 on a very chilly morning (around 48 degrees) – so much for that balmy Florida weather! The staff was very friendly (was even greeted with the line; “Welcome to the happiest place on earth…for golf”) and they let me head out to the first tee about 20 minutes early.

Surprisingly, they didn’t pair me up with anyone, which, when I made my reservations, they said would most assuredly happen. Nevertheless, I teed-off and headed out on my own. By the third, I had caught up with the gent ahead of me (also alone) and we paired up. Our twosome turned to a threesome a couple holes later when yet another single caught up to us. The three of us played the rest of the round together (albeit each with our own cart) and we rarely saw another soul out there (save for the ranger and MOFOBETE a couple of times each).

The course was well-maintained and the greens lightning fast. It wasn’t as green as in the photos online, but I didn’t mind at all. There were some pretty holes but nothing amazingly beautiful. And overall, the course was fairly difficult (I played the “white” forward tees and still lost at least two sleeves of balls)! I ended up with a 99 for 18, which is about 6 strokes above my average.

When we walked off the 18th green, I couldn’t believe the time on my phone: 10:50! With each of us in our own cart, we flew through the round in less than 3 hours. As such, I was able to catch up with my family well before lunch, which was nice.

So, was it worth it?

I’m not so sure about the two guys I ended up playing with. One was retired and was down there with his kids and grand kids. They threw gramps a bone and let him play golf for the morning, but he wasn’t wowed by the course (he told me as we were waiting for our transportation to take us back to our respective hotels that he gave the Palm a 3.5 out of 5 stars – and I agreed).

The other guy had been at Disney for nearly two weeks – he mentioned during the round that he told his wife if they (including his kids) were going to be there more than a week, he was going to play at least one round of golf. And there he was – playing his one round (in less than 3 hours to boot – not sure it was the escape he was hoping for).

As for me? Let’s just say I’m glad I played, but I probably wouldn’t play the Palm again. If I’m back down there in a few years (and I have time to squeeze-in a round), perhaps I’d consider playing one of the other two 18-hole courses at Disney World (Lake Buena Vista or Magnolia). Or perhaps when my kids are a bit older and if they like golf, we could all play the 9-holer there (Oak Trail).

Bottom line: If you’re visiting Walt Disney World soon and struggling to decide if you should work-in a round of golf or not, my advice is to spend your time (and money) with the family at one of the parks instead – I enjoyed myself far more at Epcot, Hollywood Studios and the Magic Kingdom than I did on the course.

Inn of the Mountain Gods Confirms New Mexico as a Top Spot for Golf

The state of New Mexico continues to wow me when it comes to its golf courses. One of my all time favorites is Paa-Ko Ridge between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. And now I’ve just discovered another gem in the southeastern part of the state.

Just outside the mountain town of Ruidoso on the Mescalero Apache reservation sits Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino. The resort features a championship course that is groomed to perfection and stretches 7,200 yards from the tips. But the course’s finest feature is its scenery: Tall pines, wild flowers, rugged mountains and a crystal blue lake please your senses on nearly every hole.

The cool, mountain air allows for a very comfortable round and if you’re lucky, you might spy elk or deer roaming the fairways. Teeing it up in New Mexico allows me to really appreciate why I golf, even though I’m not very good at it. Being out in this landscape; breathing in the fresh air; gazing upon inspiring scenery – there were at least two moments during my round at Inn of the Mountain Gods where I paused to take it all in – there’s something very spiritual about it all.

Beyond my experience on the course, I stayed two nights in the resort hotel too. The hospitality was fantastic and the room was very comfy. And September is a good time to go – the summer tourists are gone and the ski crowd won’t arrive for another few months. As a result, the course and the hotel aren’t over-crowded and off-season rates are in effect. There’s also good food at the resort, along with ample gambling.

But the nearby town of Ruidoso is fairly touristy too, with decent shops and restaurants. And not too far is White Sands National Monument – a place that is truly amazing. Inn of the Mountain Gods is yet another reason I rank New Mexico as one of the best places to golf in the U.S.

If you’re planning a golf getaway or are just passing through, do not pass up the chance to play golf in this state. The prices are very reasonable; New Mexican food is amazing; and the scenery is simply unbelievable. Play there and enjoy.

Golf Vacations 101: Three Lessons for a Great Trip

May 28, 2014 | By Greg D'Andrea | 1 Comment

golf stinks golfstinks

Hello my fellow stinky golfers…class is in session! Today we’re going to learn the basics of taking a vacation for golf. If you’ve never traveled for golf before, then this will serve as a guide to help you plan an awesome, stress-free trip! Let’s begin…

Lesson 1: Your budget
Contrary to popular opinion, it is possible to take an inexpensive golf vacation. Start by choosing a two-night stay instead of flying somewhere for a week or ten days. You can easily play 54 holes of golf or more staying just 2 nights: Drive to your destination early in the am (let’s assume the trip is 5 hours or less). Play 18 holes that afternoon; 18 holes the next day; and 18 more early on the day you head home.

To get the most bang for your buck, go to a ski resort (I’m not joking – see my post HERE). These days, many ski resorts feature golf courses (and often very nice courses) to help supplement them in the summertime. You will save on lodgings (the GolfStinks crew rented a 3-bedroom condo for $250 a night at a ski resort two summers ago) and enjoy off-season rates on food and other amenities.

Lesson 2: Packing and getting there
It’s always a good idea to pack light – especially if your clubs are tagging along. Renting golf clubs should only be an option in two instances: If you are spontaneously asked to play a round and your clubs aren’t with you; or if you have flown to a vacation spot knowing you will only be playing one time during your stay. For all other situations, bringing your own clubs is worth it.

If you’re driving to your destination, consider renting a minivan and going with your entire foursome (you’ll thank me later) – the GolfStinks crew has done this before and it made life way easier. If you’re flying, consider renting a minivan once you arrive (unless you’re staying at a golf resort and not really planning on exploring on your own). And consider vacationing during the week instead of on weekends. You’ll find less crowds (both on the road and at the course) and save on greens fees too.

Lesson 3: Enjoy yourself
This is the most important lesson. If you’re like me, there are a lot of things that can distract you from having a good time while on vacation – traffic; lines at the airport; and perhaps most importantly, having a bad round! The trick is to not let any of this stuff bother you. Planning ahead and being timely can help most of this. And as for the poor play – remember, you play golf because you love it, not because you’re great at it. If you find yourself getting frustrated out on the links, just remember you are on vacation and the goal is to enjoy the time you’re spending with, well – whoever it is you’re with – the golfing part is just an added bonus.

Not being a great golfer doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go on a golf vacation. But as with any trip, proper planning and the right frame of mind will go a long way in determining how much fun you have. There are plenty of great golf getaways out there – from taking a pilgrimage to the cradle of golf (Scotland) to staying closer to home. Regardless of where you want to go, if you plan it right, there’s no reason not to take a golf vacation this year!

To help visualize proper vacation planning, I’ve embedded my short video below about efficiently packing your clubs and other tips for golf travel:
