Golf At Work

August 3, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

It’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon and there’s not a cloud in the sky. As I march on down the fairway towards the green the crowd is chanting “Pe-ter, Pe-ter, Pe-ter…” Ah yes, all that is between me and victory is this last putt. The crowd roars louder “PE-TER, PE-TER, PE-TER…” And then…poof… I’m back to reality. “Peter, Peter, PETER! Should I have your desk moved outside?” Damn, caught daydreaming out the window again.

Why does it seem like I really want to play golf when I’m working? I want to play golf on the weekends but for some reason I really want to play when I’m at work. I’m pretty sure I can figure out why.  I could always play hooky and sneak out for a round but if that becomes a regular routine I might as well look for a job at the course.

What to do, what to do. How about the next best thing – golfing online. I mean, I’m at my desk, there’s an internet connection and it will look as if I’m engaged in some sort of work-related activity. This could be good. I can get somewhat of a golf fix and not have to worry about gazing out the window.

Now, I want this to be cheap and when I mean cheap I mean free. Pretty much free online golf games. That brought me to NetGolfGames.com.  A pretty cool site. It has World Golf Tour, which I have played before (and really liked) and  about and 35 or so more free games to play. Jackpot! Check it out.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!! Now let me get back to work.

Golf…It’s Only A Game

August 1, 2012 | By Greg D'Andrea | 2 Comments

“Golf is only a game.” Does that statement make you nod your head in agreement or kinda piss you off?

Picture this: Two golfers are teeing-off on a beautiful par 3. The green is guarded by a large, kidney-shaped pond and Golfer #1 hits his tee-shot a little fat – ka-plunk! It’s in the drink.

He immediately begins cursing and slamming his club into the ground. This self-abuse carries on for about 10 seconds before Golfer #2 breaks the tantrum by saying: “Hey, don’t worry about it – it’s only a game.”

Golfer #1 is visibly upset at this comment and doesn’t speak to Golfer #2 for the rest of the round. In fact, their friendship might be severely compromised.

What gives?

You see my friends, there are two kinds of golfers in this world: Those who will say “golf is only a game” and those who hate those who say “golf is only a game.” This is a psychological phenomenon in that golfer #1 is clearly in competition with golfer #2 and is appalled with Golfer #2’s placid attitude of what’s at stake.

So, what’s at stake? Well, social status, of course! Stay with me here…After all, I’ve previously written about how golf handicaps can instill a sense of male penis envy – and handicaps are just another form of competition.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m always down for a little friendly competition, but some folks just take it too far. So let’s crawl into the head of this over-competitive golfer, shall we? Research suggests that Golfer #1 may have fragile self-esteem or even be pathologically narcissistic and self-centered!

“…This results in anxiety and vigilance around social status and performance. They have to keep comparing themselves to others to make sure they are measuring up and haven’t fallen behind.”

For the Golfer #1’s of the world, it’s blasphemous to say that golf is just a game. Subconsciously, they’re thinking: “How dare you trivialize the golf measuring stick I am holding us both up to.” You see, this is a vital part of how they rank you in the category of “general life successfulness.”

For these folks, you simply cannot remove the competitiveness from the game. To do so would tear the very fabric of their psyche…and your friendship may indeed be over (without you taking the competition seriously, there is no longer a way for them to measure their status vs. yours and thus, you are no longer of interest to them).

Of course, I could be getting too deep here. Golfer #1 could be just in competition with himself – though I’m not sure if that makes things better or worse.

I guess the moral of the story is never tell another golfer (especially after he is upset over a poor shot or round) that “golf is only a game.” The ramifications could be catastrophic – for both the rest of your round and the rest of your friendship.

Chip Shots: What’s Your Satisfaction From Golf?

July 31, 2012 | By Tom Treloar | 2 Comments

So what satisfaction do you get from playing golf? I hope it’s not just to finish 18 holes under 4 hours. But maybe it’s the challenge? Or the camaraderie? Some say being out with other golfers on a nice sunny day is all the satisfaction they need. Sometimes you have to ask yourself these questions so you can remember why you play this game in the first place.

So, what satisfaction do you get from golf?

Olympic Golf…Not This Year.

July 27, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

It’s no secret that golf is an international thing. It incorporates many players from many different countries. There are many tournaments held throughout the year and these tourney’s span the globe. What’s the problem here? Why hasn’t golf been in the olympics since 1904? 1904! Can you believe that  bull doo-doo?

In their defense, the olympic committee has reinstated golf as an olympic sport…in 2016. It gets better, they made that decision in ’09. Talk about some golf haters. For pete’s sake, Curling has been an active olympic sport longer than golf (no offense to Canadians, curling and beer is a killer combo). And don’t get me started about table tennis and badminton.

What did golf do to deserve this? The U.S. collected most of the medals for golf in the 1900 and 1904 Olympics but I hope that’s not the reason. Regardless, it’s not too smart if you ask me. This is a great way for countries to showcase their talent on the ol’ track. Plus it gives young hopefuls a way to represent their countries and experience something that very few will or can.

Today the world will witness the opening ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Games. In saying so, I’m impressed that this is London’s third crack at hosting the event but I’m still not impressed with the IOC’s decision about golf. I understand there needs to be a lot of planning and what-not but let’s get real, you don’t need 7 years to figure it out.

There are plenty of courses already suited for tournament play. Maybe a little touch up here or a little tweak there to make the IOC happy. They’ve been known to institute some weird rules, whether it be the size of the basketball court or hockey rink or how long an event lasts. I get it, you want to be unique. Let’s just get them out there and play golf.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!
