The World of Golf Collectibles

Non-pro-tour golf collectibles (like Caddyshack memorabilia) exist and are available via companies like Steiner Sports

I’m pretty sure the words golf and memorabilia are something primarily spoken by a few super dedicated golf collectors and pro tour fanatics. As far back as I remember, I can’t recall at any point going out of my way to get an Arnold Palmer rookie card. In all due respect, I’m pretty sure it didn’t exist but, you get the point. I wonder what a Tiger rookie goes for these days?

But up until recently, I didn’t even consider golf memorabilia – I mean, I don’t really consider myself a lover of the pro tours. But hanging a photo of Ty Webb and Al Czervik (autographed by Chevy Chase no less) in my den? I’d be all over it! Golf collectibles such as this really do exist (see HERE). And now I can proudly display my love for golf, without visitors thinking I’m some sort of golf snob!

And these are great gift ideas too. Especially if you have trouble getting something for the golf enthusiast in your home…problem solved! Actually, now that I’m thinking about it, maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea if golf were to have trading cards? What’s that? They actually do?

Indeed – turns out that Arnold Palmer rookie card is going for just under $3,400 on eBay.  And the Tiger one? Oh, that one is only going for like 35 thousand dollars. WTF??? Talk about golf snobs! I think I’ll stick with the Caddyshack memorabilia.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!

Golfing With A Liar

January 14, 2015 | By Greg D'Andrea | Leave a Comment

Is your golf buddy lying about his score? (photo by Greg D’Andrea)

So I was playing 18-holes a couple of months ago – what would end up being my last round of 2014 – and I was paired up with an older gent who was, along with me, hacking his way through the round.

On one par 3, we both plunked our tee-shots into the pond in front of the green and on several other holes, we shared similar lies from the rough. I finished my round with a score in the high 90’s and I assumed he must have been in the same ballpark as I…perhaps slightly better.

So it was much to my surprise (and amusement) when I ran into him outside the clubhouse after our round and he exclaimed (in a dead-serious tone): “Even though I shot 75, I didn’t really like that course.”

BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Oh man, someone less polite would have burst-out laughing right there on the spot. But instead, I nodded my head in agreement, “Yeah it [the course] was nothing special.”

Now, I could have completely mis-read his game, but I would have put money on him not breaking 90. Maybe (and this is a big maybe) I missed him make a birdie or two and he shot 85, but I doubt it. However 75? I think the Viagra is swelling the wrong head, if you know what I mean.

I suppose he could really believe he shot a 75 – in a world where you take per-hole Mulligans and 6-foot gimmie putts, it’s possible to have the round he had and still finish with a 75. But I don’t remember him taking any Mulligans so he probably just flat-out lied about his score. And he’s not alone.

Golfers lie about their scores all the time. Occasionally they’ll say they scored worse than they did to keep their handicap static for tournament play, but for the most part, golfers fable about shooting lower than they actually do – as in the case of my story above.

But why?

Well, this harkens back to that little thing we call pride. People in general take pride in what they do and they don’t like to admit when they aren’t too good at something. Golf is a game that is particularly difficult to be successful at. So many prideful people who play golf tend to conceal the fact that, like most everyone else, they kinda stink at the game.

This sort of behavior is why you have to listen to the guy in the cubicle next to you go on and on about how good a golfer he is…until you finally get out on the course with him and he can’t hit it past the red tees. In your mind, this guy is both annoying and a liar. Whereas if he was forthcoming from the very beginning – that he’s terrible at golf like pretty much everyone else, the two of you might have ended up as good friends.

But unfortunately, golf liars are running rampant out there. And liars breed other liars until everyone verbally breaks 80 yet struggles to actually break 100 out on the course. Folks, this ridiculousness needs to stop!

The reality is golf is hard and only a very small percentage of people are good at it (like your club pro) and even a smaller percentage are really good at it (like pro tour golfers). Everyone else is just mediocre at best.

Look, lying isn’t necessary anyway because your score should always be secondary to the fact that you’re out doing something you love in the first place. So keep it real out there – both to your playing partners and yourself.

Bonding With And Without Golf

Some of the most common days for men to get together for some “bonding” are no doubt football Sundays.  This is especially true here in the northeast during this particular time of year when it’s NFL playoff time, there’s snow on the ground and the temps are hovering around the low 20’s.  Needless to say, it’s not golfing weather.

As I sit watching the playoffs with my boys, I consider the difference between football bonding time and golf bonding time.  As focused as we are on watching the games, we also use the time together to just talk.  What’s going on at school, what did they do with their friends, jokes, a new video game…anything really.  But it’s the football games that brought us together to begin with.  Now, despite that we all enjoy playing golf, getting all of us together to hang out and watch the first golf tournament of the year would likely have proven to be a bit more difficult.

In a funny way, just the opposite can be said of getting out and playing the sports we are, or could be, watching.  While there may not be any bonding time watching golf on TV, getting out on the course and playing is a different story.  In much the same way male bonding takes place while hanging out and watching the game, the same can be said while actually out on the course playing golf…and vice versa.  Heading outside to throw the ball around or playing a game of two-hand touch, while fun, doesn’t exactly spark up much good conversation.

So as much as I enjoy football, especially at playoff time, I’m also looking forward to a few months from now when golf season gets back into full swing.  When football season has been over for a couple of months, my boys and I can continue the bonding that will hopefully last our lifetimes, but continue it out on the course.  However, I’m sure the first time one of them beats me, I’ll be looking forward to football season again.

Swing ’til you’re happy!

Last Minute Golf Gift Ideas

Last minute golf gifts! (image courtesy of openclipart.org)

The holidays are always a wonderful time of year.  Family and friends gathering for holiday parties.  Giving and receiving gifts.  Spending time with loved ones.  The food.  It’s all great…except for one thing – the shopping.  There is nothing worse than holiday shopping.  Granted, it doesn’t help that I always wait until the last minute.  But still…it seems no matter what time of day, or what day of the week, the stores are packed, and sometimes with relatively unpleasant people.  But hey, what can you do?  The shopping must be done and there’s only so much you can do online.

Many of you probably have a golfer on your list.  And many of us can be tough to shop for.  We can be a funny bunch – we could be very picky or very specific in the equipment we use.  You can’t buy most of us the wrong golf balls.  Certain golf equipment or clothing just doesn’t fit right.  But don’t let that stop you.  Even though we’re picky, we do want some golf-related gifts.

Well, for the golfer in your life, we at Golfstinks can offer you a few options.  See, from time to time we do some product reviews.  Why not use these to help find something for the golfer on your list?  Maybe your golfer is also a reader?  Or maybe they are a fan of movies?  You could take a look at some of the movie and book reviews we’ve done for ideas.  Maybe golf gadgets are their thing.  If that’s the case, then maybe you want to take a look at some of our experiences with a number of items we’ve been lucky enough to toy around with here and there.

And of course, there are a couple choice items in our own GolfStinks Shop too!

As I said, golfers can be a funny bunch.  We can be picky with our golf stuff.  So if you’re struggling for ideas for the golfers in your life, who better to get it from than a few other golfers, albeit stinky ones?  We still know what we want for the holidays.

Swing ’til you’re happy!

Do All Of Your Golf Clubs Have To Match?

December 15, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 3 Comments

Golf Bag Mismatch
Does your golf bag look like this? (photo by North Charleston via Flickr)

So last season, I was playing nine holes after work one evening with a co-worker.  Last hole of the round and I’m taking my approach shot with the old pitching wedge.  I swing, then watch in horror as the head of my club sails down the fairway.  Are you kidding?  These clubs are only three years old and one of them snapped already?  They cost four times as much as my original set that lasted me twelve years and have since been passed down to my kids!  Tip: You don’t always get what you pay for.

Maybe I was just angry and being irrational, but I refused to spend the money on a new wedge.  I borrowed one from another stinky golfer, but I just couldn’t hit it right.  I tried going back and forth between my nine iron and another wedge, but quickly realized that was also not going to work.  However, it was late enough in the year that the season was winding down and I could just wait until the off season to pick one up.  Well, it’s the off-season.

Now, as I prepare to bring myself out to a golf shop to pickup a new wedge, I wonder how I should decide to buy one.  What I mean is, do I look for one from the same brand as I currently have?  Do I get more specific and look for not just the same manufacturer, but also from the same line?  Or do I ignore that entirely and just buy the one that feels best to me after trying them out?

In my own opinion, the latter option makes the most sense – just buy the one that feels best.  However, is that the right thing to do?  Would it make more sense to buy the one that matches the rest of the set and therefore feels the same as all of the other clubs in your bag?  Would I rather hit a club that feels better, but at the same time feels different than all of my other clubs?  Would I mess up every time I hit it because I’m trying to compensate in some way?  But in the same sense, do I purchase the one I may like less simply because there will be no difference between all of my clubs and, therefore, no compensation necessary?

You know what…this is way too much to comprehend and consider in order to purchase just one club.  I plan on doing this after the new year, but honestly, I’m getting such a headache just thinking about it!  Maybe I can just make the nine iron work…

Swing ’til you’re happy!
