Last Minute Golf Gift Ideas

Last minute golf gifts! (image courtesy of openclipart.org)

The holidays are always a wonderful time of year.  Family and friends gathering for holiday parties.  Giving and receiving gifts.  Spending time with loved ones.  The food.  It’s all great…except for one thing – the shopping.  There is nothing worse than holiday shopping.  Granted, it doesn’t help that I always wait until the last minute.  But still…it seems no matter what time of day, or what day of the week, the stores are packed, and sometimes with relatively unpleasant people.  But hey, what can you do?  The shopping must be done and there’s only so much you can do online.

Many of you probably have a golfer on your list.  And many of us can be tough to shop for.  We can be a funny bunch – we could be very picky or very specific in the equipment we use.  You can’t buy most of us the wrong golf balls.  Certain golf equipment or clothing just doesn’t fit right.  But don’t let that stop you.  Even though we’re picky, we do want some golf-related gifts.

Well, for the golfer in your life, we at Golfstinks can offer you a few options.  See, from time to time we do some product reviews.  Why not use these to help find something for the golfer on your list?  Maybe your golfer is also a reader?  Or maybe they are a fan of movies?  You could take a look at some of the movie and book reviews we’ve done for ideas.  Maybe golf gadgets are their thing.  If that’s the case, then maybe you want to take a look at some of our experiences with a number of items we’ve been lucky enough to toy around with here and there.

And of course, there are a couple choice items in our own GolfStinks Shop too!

As I said, golfers can be a funny bunch.  We can be picky with our golf stuff.  So if you’re struggling for ideas for the golfers in your life, who better to get it from than a few other golfers, albeit stinky ones?  We still know what we want for the holidays.

Swing ’til you’re happy!

The Belated Mother’s Day Golf Gift Guide

May 14, 2012 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

Some cliché Mother's Day golf gifts...
Some cliché Mother’s Day golf gifts…

As you may have read here in the past, my wife is not a golfer.  Neither is my mother.  So my excuse to play golf on Mother’s Day, via an invitation to take them golfing, is non-existent.  But, if my wife were a golfer, buying Mother’s Day gifts for her would certainly be easier.

See, my wife is a bit of a girly girl.  So, along with quality and well-performing golf equipment, it would have to include that cuteness factor as well.  You know what that means?  It means the equipment is likely going to have to include the color pink.

So in search of golf equipment that fits both bills, I give you the Golfstinks Gift Guide to Belated Mother’s Day Golf Gifts.

Well, if she’s a golfer, you’d have to assume she already has golf clubs.  And those can get quite pricey.  So let’s instead look to something in which to carry the clubs.

Being that my wife is a Nike fan, this one would suit her well.  However, I’m sure you can find yourself a pink golf bag from just about any manufacturer.  The key here is the cuteness factor.

We’ve all already seen the pink golf balls, so those are a given.  So instead, lets look to some golf shoes.  What woman wouldn’t want a pair of cute, pink golf shoes?

I mentioned that my wife is a fan of Nike.  But sorry honey, I like these Adidas better.

But lets imagine for a second that you have lots of money.  OK, lets imagine for a second that I have lots of money, because I don’t know the financial status of our readers.  But I sure do know mine…and lets just say it ain’t quite good enough for this:

Well, I’m sure I’m not the only one who is in a financial situation where a purchase such as this isn’t quite realistic.  But still, one could understand how, if your finances would allow, this would be a great purchase for the special golfing mom in your life.  Be it your wife or mother, especially if they live on a golf course, she could be the envy of all her golfing girlfriends.

Now I know it’s a day late – Mother’s Day was yesterday.  But you could always use the old “I bought (blank) for you, but I had to order it so it should be here soon” excuse.  Hey, it’s worked in the past.  Or, you could save yourself the aggravation and just remember sooner for next year…

The Male Golfers Twist On Valentine’s Day

February 13, 2012 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

Hey ladies, Valentine’s Day is tomorrow. Time to get out and grab those last minute gifts with which to shower your man!

Now that sounds a little out of the ordinary, right? As a matter of fact, it sounds downright ridiculous. We all know that Valentine’s Day is a holiday for women. It’s been marketed that way for as long as any of us can remember. Don’t get me wrong, men are acknowledged on Valentine’s Day, but not nearly to the extent of women.

But I’d like to do something about that. We men would like to get gifts as well! Valentine’s Day is supposed to be shared. Well, let’s share evenly then!

For instance, a card. Receiving a card is very important to a woman – trust me, I’ve learned the hard way. Well guess what…men like cards as well. So ladies, why not pickup a card to exchange with your husband? Why not start with this one?  The Players Pass card is a card that can be used all year, not just put up on your mantle for a few days.  Sounds like a nice gift, right?  Well I’m not done yet…

What about a cute little stuffed animal?  These are always popular with the ladies.  But you know what?  Men like cute little stuffed animals as well.  But instead of cuddling with them, we prefer to stick our golf clubs up their rear-ends.

Cute right? Don’t you think you’re man would appreciate this as well?

Moving on to some other popular Valentine’s gifts – how about flowers?  Believe it or not, men like flowers just about as much as women do.  The only difference being that men prefer the setting in which the flower lie rather than simply the flowers themselves.  See, women will put the flowers in a lovely vase and proudly display them on a table, shelf or whatever.  Men on the other hand prefer to view the flowers in a setting such as this:

Again, it’s not just the flowers.  It’s the setting that comes with the flowers.  And guess what – a round of golf on a nice course can cost just as much as that dozen roses that will be dead in a few days.

But the granddaddy of all Valentine’s gifts is, of course, jewelry.  The onslaught of television commercials can be mind-numbing. And drilled into our heads is the mindset that woman’s best friend is a diamond (while man’s is a dog).  But let’s not forget that men like diamonds as well.  While a woman’s diamonds may be displayed hanging from her earlobes, around her neck or draped across her wrist, a golfing man’s diamond may look a little different.  No, I’m not talking about Pure Spin golf clubs.  I’m talking about a certain little Turkish diamond – specifically Cornelia Diamond Golf Resort & Spa.

Now doesn’t that look like a couples resort?  It’s beautiful, luxurious and exotic.  I can’t think of a better place for couples to do things on their own together!  “I’ll play golf, you go to the spa!”  It’s perfect!

So there you have it.  A little twist on Valentine’s Day.  A way to make it more of a couples holiday than just a women’s holiday.  OK, so it’s not perfect.  I left out chocolate.  But hey, it’s an imperfect holiday.  I’m just trying to add a bit of balance.

What To Do With Your Crappy Golf Gifts?

January 11, 2012 | By Greg D'Andrea | 2 Comments

It happens every Christmas without fail…Someone (typically a non-golfer) will give me a crappy, useless golf gift that will just clutter-up my attic. Oh, they mean well, but they should know better.

“But my co-worker (or neighbor, or cousin or concubine) loves golf. Why shouldn’t I buy them that little desktop golfer figurine with the plaid pants?”

I think the answer is obvious: Because regardless of if they like golf or not, a little golfer figurine for your office is just plain stupid.

For me, this past holiday was no different (see photo below).

golf bag telephone

Yes, that is what it looks like: A golf bag telephone. Let me restate that: A foot and a half tall golf bag telephone. OK, I know what you’re thinking; It’s the thought that counts.

But seriously, where am I supposed to put that thing? First off, I don’t even have a home phone line, so actually using it is out. Secondly, even if I could use it, there’d be no space left on my desk to do any work!

So what should I do with it? Is there a place you can send all your kitsch to have it recycled? If only.

I ran across a mommy blogger complaining about holiday tchotchkes she received as gifts and one commenter suggested to donate the stuff to Goodwill. That’s actually not a bad idea – I’ll bet someone will get excited over this thing.

Of course, there are a plethora of golfers who read this blog. Perhaps one of you can use this to complete that golf-themed den you’ve been working on for the past 10 years?

So here’s the deal: Email me at greg@golfstinks.com if you want this phone (include your snail mail address)! If I get multiple requests (doubtful, but you never know) then I’ll randomly choose someone. If I don’t get any requests (entirely plausible), then it’s off to the Goodwill.

Upon which, one of my crazy aunts will probably stumble across it, buy it and re-gift it to me for next Christmas.

A few notes on this phone: It didn’t come in a box, so there are no instructions. And since I don’t have a landline, I haven’t actually checked that it works. It seems to be in rather good condition though. Hey, what do you want for free?

**UPDATE! Congrats to Pat from New York – he was one of several people (believe it or not) interested in owning the golf bag telephone! According to Pat, the phone is going to reside in his “downstairs recreation area.” Enjoy it Pat – obviously you’ll get more use out of it than I would have!**
