Is Golf Equipment on your Holiday Wish List?

December 11, 2018 | By Greg D'Andrea | 1 Comment

Some golfers love receiving golf equipment as gifts, while others prefer to purchase their own clubs; balls; etc. Take our poll and let us know what your preference is!

Are golf items under your tree this year?

Every year around the beginning of December, my wife asks me what I want for Christmas. This season, I asked for a forged set of…wait for it…J.A. Henckles. In case you’re not familiar with this German company, they make forged culinary knives, not forged golf clubs.

The funny thing is, I’m not much of a chef. I do make a mean salsa, but it’s not like I blog about my cooking skills. Golf, on the other hand, I do blog about. But the thought of asking my wife for golf clubs, or even a new golf bag, has never even crossed my mind.

To go a step further, I don’t even remember a year in which something golf-related was on my wish list! I’ve never really thought about it until now, but I guess most of this boils down to two reasons: First, I’m very particular about what I buy myself for golf. I have to get certain clubs, certain balls, etc. But secondly, I guess I’ve always thought of golf as my personal hobby.

My wife doesn’t play golf. So when I make a golf-related purchase, it’s something I’ve researched, tried-out and saved up for. Golf equipment has never been something I’ve left up to others to get for me.

Thus, my Christmas list has always consisted of things like a new watch; new shoes; or like this year, forged knives – not golf stuff. Oh don’t get me wrong, I’ve received golf gifts that I haven’t asked for – some of which have been helpful and others that you simply won’t believe!

Anyway, what about you? Are you receiving fabulous golf gifts from your significant other this holiday season? Or like me, would you rather buy your own golf stuff? Take the poll below and let me know. Who knows, maybe I’m missing out!

December 24, 2013 | By Golf Stinks | Leave a Comment

With the season of giving upon us, we here at GolfStinks have decided to do a little giving ourselves.

Over the past year, we’ve given away a plethora of golf-related products, but we’ve never held a giveaway where more than one person wins at a time – but that’s all going to change today!

We have three items to give away:

golf genie pocket guideGift #1: The Golf Genie Pocket Guide

golf_excuse3Gift #2: The Golf Excuse Handbook: A Duffers Survival Guide

We’ll choose three winners at random and the first winner has his/her choice of one of the three items. The second winner will chose between the two remaining items, while the third and final winner will receive the last remaining item.

If you do any online golf betting, you’ll know the odds of winning things on the internet are slim. But with it being Christmas and us giving away three prizes, I’d say your chances of winning have just increased exponentially!

Good luck and Happy Holidays from GolfStinks!

Golf Gifts For Christmas?

December 23, 2013 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

I’m very appreciative of anything I get as a Christmas gift.  I don’t care if it was expensive or cheap.  I don’t care if it’s big or small.  I don’t care if it’s beautiful or ugly as sin.  It’s the thought that counts, and the fact that someone took the time to get me anything at all is good enough for me.  As a matter of fact, when someone asks me what I want for Christmas, I normally just say “Nothing.  You don’t have to get me anything.”  Because I really don’t expect anything.  I truly am one of those people who would rather give than receive.

Now, on that note, I want to put in a request to anyone who does in fact want to buy me a gift for Christmas.  But it’s not a request for something.  Instead, it’s a request to not buy me something.  My only request is that you do not buy me anything golf related.  I know that sounds funny coming from a golfer, but it’s strange…when it comes to golf equipment, I would rather just purchase it myself.

It’s not that I think someone will do a poor job getting me a gift.  And it’s not that it won’t be appreciated.  It’s just with a lot of golf equipment, it’s not easy to pick out for someone else.  Like clubs for instance.  You can’t just give someone a set of clubs.  There’s so much that goes into it that can’t be just picked off of a shelf.  Same goes for a pair of golf shoes.  There have been times when I haven’t even been able to pick out a good pair of shoes.  I mean, you can try them on and walk around the store, but you really don’t know if your feet are going to be killing you by the 8th hole until you get out there and try them out.

But on the other hand, things like balls and tees are always good.  I mean, for the most part…a tee is a tee.  Some people will argue that they can’t just use any balls and they need to use specific ones.  Not me.  I have tried all different kinds and they don’t seem to make a difference to me.  I stink.  What ball I use is not going to change that.  Gift certificates are another good idea.  This way, I can get the golf accessories that I want and still pick them out myself.

So keep these things in mind if you’re looking for some last minute gifts for the golfer, or golfers, in your life.  The big ticket items are not the ones you want to purchase on your own for someone else.  Go for the accessories or the gift certificates.  When it comes to purchasing golf gifts, like a golf score, less is more.

Swing ’til you’re happy!

A Tricky Time Of Year…

December 20, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

driver xmas ornamentNow that we are in the middle of the holiday season, we can be easily distracted by all the egg nog, fruit cakes and all around joyfulness this season brings. Not me. My guard is up. Seeing that my significant other does not golf and has no knowledge of golf, golf equipment or golf prices, I am very careful when I answer the question “What do I want for Christmas?”.

Fellow hacks, be careful and proceed with caution. Now, I’m not saying she’s cheap, not at all. But if I told her I want a new driver, she would see a $400 plus price tag and think I’m crazy. Not only that, her attention would then shift to the clubs in my bag and assume those were a hundred or so each. Man it’s getting deep…

Without hesitation, she says “Oh sure, you can spend thousands (a little exaggeration out of anger) on dirty golf clubs but heaven forbid I need (notice she said need, not want) a pair of shoes…” I can assure you my clubs were not in the thousands. Next thing I know, my mother-in-law is involved in this whole ordeal and I’m getting bombarded from both sides. Hey, what’s with the bucket of water and towel…?

Ok, so they wouldn’t actually water board me but you see what I’m saying? We can avoid all of this unnecessary hoopla by not asking for any golf equipment for Christmas. Unless your significant other is rich or golfs, which in that case I say “Good for you, you lucky little devil you!” So, please keep this season joyous and avoid any holiday water boarding.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!

How Golfers Look at Holidays

September 2, 2013 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

Is it just me, or do all of us golfers look at holidays a little bit differently than everyone else?  For instance, many people look at Memorial Day or Independence Day as a day for get-togethers with friends and family.., cookouts, parties and fireworks.  Many look at Christmas as a time of giving, sharing and, again, gathering with family.  Golfers look at these days and times this way too.  However, they look at it other ways as well.

For starters, any holiday that gives us a day off from work is instantly thought of as an opportunity to play golf.  Sure, a Memorial Day cookout or Fourth of July party are great!  But maybe we could squeeze at least nine holes in before the party starts, right?  And being that this is Labor Day weekend, what do you think was the first idea that came to mind for having Monday off?  Obviously, golf.  This weekend however, was quickly shut down by the wife due to my choosing to attend a baseball game on Sunday.  Now, some yard work is on the docket for Monday.  Yard work…it gets you every time.

When Christmas time rolls around here in the northeast, obviously, playing golf is not an option for the next few months, at least.  So our attention shifts from playing golf to preparing to play golf.  What does this mean?  It means we ask for gifts pertaining to golf.  Forget the things we need.  We want golf gear.  We put together Christmas lists all related to golf.  We want….no…we need a new putter.  We need a new driver.  We need a new pair of golf shoes.  See what I’m getting at?

We golfers love to spend time with our families.  We love to have a get together, a party or cookout and spend time with others.  We just hope that part of that holiday off from work includes golf.  We love non-golfers.  We just have a little different way of showing it.

Swing ’til you’re happy!
