How Many Female Golfers Are There Anyway?

May 13, 2013 | By Chris Chirico | 10 Comments

Female golfers
Are women few and far between on the golf course?

In the spirit of Mother’s Day, I began looking into some statistics regarding female golfers.  I’m not really sure how I connected the two though.  My mother doesn’t golf.  Neither do my sisters.

Although growing up, I remember my mother owning a set of clubs, but I never actually saw her use them.  Much like my father, I think she gave the game a try only to find that it wasn’t for her.  But nevertheless, I somehow connected Mother’s Day to golf anyway.

Did you know, depending upon where you look and what stats you find, it’s reported that anywhere between 20-25% of amateur golfers are women?  So one out of every four or five golfers out on the course are female?  I don’t know about you, but those numbers seem a bit inflated to me.  I don’t know why they would be inflated because I don’t think there’s any reason to inflate them.  But either way, it seems a little high to me.

See, the thing is, I use my own experiences to compare to these numbers.  On the small scale of my personal experience, I have played golf exactly one time so far this season.  And in that one round, I saw one female golfer out on the course.  She was in a threesome, two groups behind me.  Certainly not anywhere near the 20-25% claimed.

But that’s only one round.  So it’s not fair to judge off of that.  But it seems like this situation occurs anywhere I play.  It’s very rare that I see women out on the golf course anywhere or anytime I play.  I can count on one hand how many times I’ve been paired up with women when I’ve shown up to the course with less than a foursome.  As a matter of fact, I can think of only three times off the top of my head – all three times I showed up as a twosome, and two of those three we were paired up with a husband and wife.  Only once were we paired up with two women.

What’s my point?  I have no idea.  It’s just a stat I found to seem inflated for some reason.  As mentioned, none of the women in my family are golfers, and I have no female friends who have done any more than try the sport once or twice and never took it any further.

But I guess now that I’ve seen it and used my golf experiences for comparison, it does dishearten me a bit.  What I mean is, one of the great things about golf is that it’s a sport that can be played pretty much equally by men and women.  Sure, for the most part, men hit the ball farther.  But that’s only one facet of the game, and certainly not always an important one.  Otherwise, there isn’t a whole lot of difference between male and female golfers.  There’s still a technique and a certain level of discipline and judgment required to play the game – and those things have nothing to do with physical strength or how far you can hit the ball.

I, for one, would like to see more women out on the golf course.  I would like to see the 20-25% as stated out there.  Heck, I’d like it to be higher!  Why not?  As I stated earlier, this sport has little to do with physical strength and much more to do with things that make the playing field much more level between men and women.  So I think the real issue here is, why is it that women only represent 20-25% of golfers and not closer to 50%?  Maybe that’s something I should look further into…

The Belated Mother’s Day Golf Gift Guide

May 14, 2012 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

Some cliché Mother's Day golf gifts...
Some cliché Mother’s Day golf gifts…

As you may have read here in the past, my wife is not a golfer.  Neither is my mother.  So my excuse to play golf on Mother’s Day, via an invitation to take them golfing, is non-existent.  But, if my wife were a golfer, buying Mother’s Day gifts for her would certainly be easier.

See, my wife is a bit of a girly girl.  So, along with quality and well-performing golf equipment, it would have to include that cuteness factor as well.  You know what that means?  It means the equipment is likely going to have to include the color pink.

So in search of golf equipment that fits both bills, I give you the Golfstinks Gift Guide to Belated Mother’s Day Golf Gifts.

Well, if she’s a golfer, you’d have to assume she already has golf clubs.  And those can get quite pricey.  So let’s instead look to something in which to carry the clubs.

Being that my wife is a Nike fan, this one would suit her well.  However, I’m sure you can find yourself a pink golf bag from just about any manufacturer.  The key here is the cuteness factor.

We’ve all already seen the pink golf balls, so those are a given.  So instead, lets look to some golf shoes.  What woman wouldn’t want a pair of cute, pink golf shoes?

I mentioned that my wife is a fan of Nike.  But sorry honey, I like these Adidas better.

But lets imagine for a second that you have lots of money.  OK, lets imagine for a second that I have lots of money, because I don’t know the financial status of our readers.  But I sure do know mine…and lets just say it ain’t quite good enough for this:

Well, I’m sure I’m not the only one who is in a financial situation where a purchase such as this isn’t quite realistic.  But still, one could understand how, if your finances would allow, this would be a great purchase for the special golfing mom in your life.  Be it your wife or mother, especially if they live on a golf course, she could be the envy of all her golfing girlfriends.

Now I know it’s a day late – Mother’s Day was yesterday.  But you could always use the old “I bought (blank) for you, but I had to order it so it should be here soon” excuse.  Hey, it’s worked in the past.  Or, you could save yourself the aggravation and just remember sooner for next year…

How Can I Take Advantage of the Mother’s Day Special?

May 9, 2011 | By Chris Chirico | 2 Comments

Always looking for the chance to play a round of golf, or to play golf for less money than usual, I have to be on the lookout for every discount opportunity available. But what to do around this time of year? By “this time of year” I mean Mother’s Day. With all of the Mother’s Day specials floating around, I as a male golfer, am left out in the cold. So what do I do?

My mother is not a golfer, and as evidenced here, here and here…neither is my wife. As a matter of fact, none of the women in my life are golfers. So it seems there’s only one way to take advantage…bring my wife anyway.

Here’s the plan – Stinky Golfer Greg, his wife, my wife and I show up to the course offering the “Mom’s Play Free” special. I’ll have her carry Greg’s clubs into the pro shop where she doesn’t have to pay, but I pay full price. But when we go to pick up our cart, she heads back to the car, Greg joins me at the cart, pays me half the greens fee, and when the difference is split, we both actually play for half price! My wife and Greg’s wife go shopping for the next several hours while Greg and I shank our way through the course and tank our way through the 19th hole. And when we’ve had our fill of both golf and “refreshments,” we have on-call designated drivers! How can you beat that?!

So after this nifty idea, I wonder which other specials I can try to take advantage. Here’s one I’ve come up with:

Unemployment Mondays…genius! All I need now is an unemployed friend! And the friend part is optional. With the current national unemployment rate standing at 9.2%, that’s almost 1 in 10 odds that I’ll come across someone who is collecting. I will gladly pay five or ten bucks for an unemployment check stub! This particular club charges $28 for greens fees. So a cart is required. That’s no big deal. I’m saving $28 on the course! Not to sound like an infomercial, but that’s a $46 value for $18!

How about you? Can anyone share some other free golf specials of which I may be able to take advantage? After all, the best golf is free golf!
