Do All Of Your Golf Clubs Have To Match?

Golf Bag Mismatch
Does your golf bag look like this? (photo by North Charleston via Flickr)

So last season, I was playing nine holes after work one evening with a co-worker.  Last hole of the round and I’m taking my approach shot with the old pitching wedge.  I swing, then watch in horror as the head of my club sails down the fairway.  Are you kidding?  These clubs are only three years old and one of them snapped already?  They cost four times as much as my original set that lasted me twelve years and have since been passed down to my kids!  Tip: You don’t always get what you pay for.

Maybe I was just angry and being irrational, but I refused to spend the money on a new wedge.  I borrowed one from another stinky golfer, but I just couldn’t hit it right.  I tried going back and forth between my nine iron and another wedge, but quickly realized that was also not going to work.  However, it was late enough in the year that the season was winding down and I could just wait until the off season to pick one up.  Well, it’s the off-season.

Now, as I prepare to bring myself out to a golf shop to pickup a new wedge, I wonder how I should decide to buy one.  What I mean is, do I look for one from the same brand as I currently have?  Do I get more specific and look for not just the same manufacturer, but also from the same line?  Or do I ignore that entirely and just buy the one that feels best to me after trying them out?

In my own opinion, the latter option makes the most sense – just buy the one that feels best.  However, is that the right thing to do?  Would it make more sense to buy the one that matches the rest of the set and therefore feels the same as all of the other clubs in your bag?  Would I rather hit a club that feels better, but at the same time feels different than all of my other clubs?  Would I mess up every time I hit it because I’m trying to compensate in some way?  But in the same sense, do I purchase the one I may like less simply because there will be no difference between all of my clubs and, therefore, no compensation necessary?

You know what…this is way too much to comprehend and consider in order to purchase just one club.  I plan on doing this after the new year, but honestly, I’m getting such a headache just thinking about it!  Maybe I can just make the nine iron work…

Swing ’til you’re happy!

Golf: A Real Ball Breaker

Sometimes we feel like this golf ball out on the course… (photo by Greg D’Andrea)

Golf is, hands down, an absolute ball breaker, club breaker, bank breaker and whatever else breaker. This sport (or “game” for the non-believers) seems to have more cons going for it than pros. And that’s at any level. Beginners struggle with pretty much everything. Professionals struggle (and I use that term loosely) with certain facets of their game too.

In reality, pro’s are scratch or close to scratch golfers. Why do they feel the need to break a $500 dollar club because they hit an errant tee shot? No big deal dude…you screwed up, stuff happens. You are part of an elite group. It’s called “professional golfer”…act like it. You see where this is going, the whole ball, club and bank breaking thing? Not to mention in a few instances, relationship breaker.

So, why do we keep playing? I have no friggin’ clue. Here’s a game that, when I’m playing, I hate every other shot and dislike the ones in between. People say it’s that one great shot that keeps you coming back…hmmmm…so then golf is like crack. I heard stories from addicts that tried crack for the first time and were chasing that high ever since. Golf and crack; same jazz different band.

Ok, maybe crack and golf aren’t quite on the same level but you get my point. Why do I keep playing? Well yes, it’s that one shot, it’s the camaraderie, the challenge but most important – I love the game. I know it’s rather insane when you think about it. You motherf$#@ everything when you’re playing and swear you’ll never pick up the sticks again. But when you’re off the course, you miss it and think about it. I believe Frank Sinatra said it best: That’s life.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!! Be a hack, don’t do crack.

POLL: Have You Ever Broken A Golf Club in Anger?

Does breaking a golf club make you feel better?

Perhaps one of the greatest feelings I ever got was when I broke my golf club in half. Is that bad?

Some years ago, I was hacking my way through the back 9 of a local course. I had been struggling with my putter throughout most of the round and by the time I teed-off on the 16th, the rest of my game decided to head on over to the 19th-hole for a few beers without me.

Anyway, after planes, trains and automobiles to get to the green, I promptly 5-putted (I swear the freakin’ hole was wearing a chastity belt). I ended up taking a 12.

Without even thinking, I immediately snapped my putter in half across my knee. A few seconds later I was rife with regret. But for that fleeting moment while I was actually in the act of breaking the club, I felt invigorated. You know that one moment on the course that keeps you coming back for more? You could be playing wretchedly all round and then you hit that one shot that inspires you to play again the next week? Well, my moment of inspiration to play again came from me breaking my putter across my knee.

Not long after, I was at a PGA Tour event and watched one pro (I forget who now) also break his putter across his knee after putting-out on the 18th (he was smart to do it on the last hole…I had to putt with my 3-wood the rest of the way). Anyway, I remember this pro holding up the broken putter to wild cheers from the gallery. And that’s when it hit me – maybe I shouldn’t regret what I did?

I haven’t broken a club on purpose since, and really, haven’t seen anyone else break one either. But I don’t think I can say I’ll never break one again – when I’m having one of “those” rounds, it may just be the medicine I need to help me get back out there ASAP.

How about you? Have you ever broken a club in anger? Take the poll and let us know.
