Relocating? Let Golfstinks Find You A New Home Course.

June 1, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

Relocating is a big deal. Especially if your move is from one part of the country to another. I’ve been told that it can be anxiety ridden and stressful as well as exciting and promising all at the same time. Whew! Talk about a roller coaster ride of emotions. I’ve personally never made a move of this magnitude before but the opportunity has come about. Nothing is finalized but we’re almost at the negotiating table.

What to do? What to do? Besides all of the other real life stuff, like work (which is the primary reason for moving), relocating would present a new issue for me. Where will I golf? I’m not familiar with this area (Oh, almost forgot, my possible relocation would be from the Northeast to South Florida). Thanks to our handy golf course search, I can check out roughly all 1400 courses that Florida has to offer…give or take a few.

This relocating business will definitely be time consuming. Anything that I can do to free up some would be much appreciated. With that in mind, I can use Golf Now’s Florida page to help me book a tee time and even save a buck or two! Hey, saving money is always a good thing while getting acclimated to your new surroundings.

As I weigh-out the pros and cons of moving, it’s good to know there are resources available to help with every facet along the way. The less helpless and alone you feel, the easier it is to make the transition. Whether it’s a new track for me or back to the ol’ faithful that I’ve been hacking up for years, the most important part is that I’ll be doing what I love – stinking at golf.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!

Golfing What’s and Woes

May 25, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

For the first time in a long time I was able to get a round in on a nice sunny morning. If you haven’t followed or didn’t know,  this is also my first time out in almost a year and a half due to 1) Surgery and B…hehehe…2) Our golf season in the Northeast is just that – seasonal. If it wasn’t for winter I would have been out there already.

I have to admit though I was a little anxious. I had no idea what to expect. It was like my first day of school all over again. I was up early, cleaned my clubs, wiped the dust off the bag, remembered my lunch money and was off.

As we got to the first tee it hit me – the first “Golfing What”. What do I do here? Hit the ball. I know that wise ass. My issue was figuring out my distances. I knew when I stopped playing a year and a half ago what my distances were more or less but today is a different story. And my driver, forget it, that wasn’t seeing the light of day.

Since the driver was staying in, I figured I would give the 3 wood a chance. And what a chance it had…right in the friggin’ lumberyard. Can you smell that? That, my friends, is the smell of my first “Woe”. So the driver and 3 wood were sent to the showers and I decided it’s all iron play from here on out. Looking back, it was a wise decision. Just by eliminating the woods and driver I shaved strokes off my score!

We hit a little bit of a back up at the 4th or 5th hole and we end up talking with the group in front of us as they wait for the firm, you know Shanks, Hook, Skull & Slice, to make their approach shots to the green. As we were chatting it up with this group my second “Golfing What” and “Woe” hit me almost simultaneously. What the f@#! is this guy wearing? He had on a ratty t-shirt and dirty shorts! WTF!

I know we try to do our best to keep golf’s traditions alive but I get this feeling that some have put aside golf’s formalities for comfort. Not that I’m a stickler for dress code (I wear cargo shorts and I’ll save that battle for another time) but I think a little decency on the course is expected. Just my $0.02.

Hit’ em long…yell FORE!!!

Win a FREE Golf Shirt (Part 2): Style

May 18, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

Last week Stinky Golfer Greg unveiled Part 1 and this week, as the title implies, I bring you Part 2. As with last week’s post, the same rules apply. I review the apparel and just like always – we give away something free!

I believe we are on a quest to find the perfect polo or golf shirt. It’s our destiny to find the brand, style, cut or whatever that gives us a warm fuzzy feeling inside when we put it on (without the help of alcohol). As for me, I like to incorporate comfort into style when I dress. I’m not a fan of wearing something uncomfortable or painful even at the sake of being stylish.

This is why my favorite fabric is cotton. I wear as much cotton stuff as possible. It really is the fabric of my life as that commercial states. That said, once I find that polo or golf shirt I ask; What can be done to make it better? Glad I asked. You make it super soft, able to withstand years of washing and wear and the kicker…you make it organic.

Wait a minute…who does all that? Another great question! Criquetshirts.com does. You see, co-founders Billy Nachman and Hobson Brown went on a journey to find the perfect polo. After years and years of searching with little luck, they decided to stop looking and just make one.

And boy did they. The super kind folks over at Criquet Shirts sent me one of their shirts to check out. First thing I noticed was how soft and elegant the shirt felt. Just like they said it would. It was like a well broken-in polo from the get go. A comfortable vintage cut, not too fitted not too baggy. And in (as they put it) “…a nod to the past and the hope of a more sustainable, stylish future…” and we have a winner!

And now for the best part…We’d like one of you to own this shirt…for free! Just head on over to our Facebook page (“Like” us if you haven’t already) and “Like” the post on our wall entitled “Win a FREE Stylish Golf Shirt” – that’s it!

We’ll select a random winner on Saturday (5/19/12) and you’ll receive a stylish organic cotton polo shirt* courtesy of Criquet Shirts!

Hit ’em long…yell FORE…Good luck!

*Giveaway shirt is in size mens large only.

Caught On The Golf Course

May 11, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

It must suck to be Josh Beckett right now. I mean, he got hurt ( a sore lat muscle…really?) was put on the DL and got caught golfing. What’s going on there Mr. Beckett? And on top of that he was booed by his own fans yesterday because he got busted. Shame on you for letting your fans down. More so, shame on you for blowing our cover.

It’s no big secret that we hacks use the golf course to sneak away. But what we don’t need is more attention brought to this issue. When you have fans at a baseball game screaming “Fore!” because the batter hits your pitch foul, you need to assess your situation. And while I do find that very funny, it still doesn’t help.

This whole Beckett ordeal got me thinking how many times I’ve slipped-off to a golf course hoping not to be seen. Whether it was skipping work (not my present job of course) or avoiding some sort of event, I did it. Every time I did do it though, there was a sense of paranoia hovering over me. You know, Murphy’s Law would take over and I would run into that one person with a big mouth.

Well, I’m glad to report it hasn’t happened to me…yet. I have seen a couple people I know get caught out on the course. Worst case was one of the guys actually lost his job. He called in sick and was spotted by the company’s VP on the same course. Talk about crap luck. It turns out his attendance record at work was sub par (pun intended) anyway. I guess the whole straw and camel back thing applies here.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!! Beckett…

Golfing With That Guy

May 4, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 3 Comments

When I say that guy, I’m referring to that guy. You know who I’m talking about. The person that everyone can’t stand and tries not to become. Please do not confuse that guy with “that” guy – the one who sneaks into the background of photos unnoticed. Such as “Hey, what a great picture of…wait a minute…who’s that guy making faces in the back?”

As you can probably see, this is going to be somewhat of a rant. So, a friend of mine and I were paired up with another two at a local track. As soon as we approached the two, red flags went up all over the place. The that guy warning siren was blaring in my head. Here we had the first guy adjusting those balance or weight screws on his driver and explaining to his buddy the reason for them. Oh boy, a know-it-all.

Just to clarify, his buddy didn’t seem to give a rat’s ass about the driver, its weights or whatever else was being explained (which was another indicator of what was in store). But, I told myself not to jump to conclusions and gave him a fair shake. We step to the tee box and have at it. Wouldn’t you know, Mr. Let-Me-Adjust-My-Driver-For-The-Wind-Conditions shanks it right into the lumber yard. WTF! He then proceeds to look for it, swearing it hit off something and bounced out. After not finding it, he insists he has to tee-off again even though there’s a bit of a back up on the tee box. Yep, he’s that guy.

Now, how can this get any worse you ask? That guy also felt the need to quote golf movies while he plays. “Cinderella story…” or “It’s in the hole!” Dude, shut the f@#$ up! Please! We all saw that movie a hundred-thousand times. I can recite the lines verbatim. In fact, I can probably re-enact the whole movie by myself.

Well, I’m glad I got that off my chest. Thanks for listening.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!! Don’t be that guy.
