Win a FREE Golf Shirt (Part 2): Style

May 18, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

Last week Stinky Golfer Greg unveiled Part 1 and this week, as the title implies, I bring you Part 2. As with last week’s post, the same rules apply. I review the apparel and just like always – we give away something free!

I believe we are on a quest to find the perfect polo or golf shirt. It’s our destiny to find the brand, style, cut or whatever that gives us a warm fuzzy feeling inside when we put it on (without the help of alcohol). As for me, I like to incorporate comfort into style when I dress. I’m not a fan of wearing something uncomfortable or painful even at the sake of being stylish.

This is why my favorite fabric is cotton. I wear as much cotton stuff as possible. It really is the fabric of my life as that commercial states. That said, once I find that polo or golf shirt I ask; What can be done to make it better? Glad I asked. You make it super soft, able to withstand years of washing and wear and the kicker…you make it organic.

Wait a minute…who does all that? Another great question! Criquetshirts.com does. You see, co-founders Billy Nachman and Hobson Brown went on a journey to find the perfect polo. After years and years of searching with little luck, they decided to stop looking and just make one.

And boy did they. The super kind folks over at Criquet Shirts sent me one of their shirts to check out. First thing I noticed was how soft and elegant the shirt felt. Just like they said it would. It was like a well broken-in polo from the get go. A comfortable vintage cut, not too fitted not too baggy. And in (as they put it) “…a nod to the past and the hope of a more sustainable, stylish future…” and we have a winner!

And now for the best part…We’d like one of you to own this shirt…for free! Just head on over to our Facebook page (“Like” us if you haven’t already) and “Like” the post on our wall entitled “Win a FREE Stylish Golf Shirt” – that’s it!

We’ll select a random winner on Saturday (5/19/12) and you’ll receive a stylish organic cotton polo shirt* courtesy of Criquet Shirts!

Hit ’em long…yell FORE…Good luck!

*Giveaway shirt is in size mens large only.

Win a FREE Golf Shirt (Part 1): Performance

May 9, 2012 | By Greg D'Andrea | 3 Comments

This week, we’re going to do something we don’t typically do here at the Golf Stinks Blog; We’re going to review golf apparel. But we’re also going to do something we always do; and that’s giveaway free stuff (read on)!

Our story begins about 20 years ago when the only polo shirts available for golf were cotton knit and cotton/polyester blend (or pique). Back then, it was simple for us golfers – we were either the cotton knit type or the pique type. I myself was a cotton knit fan – I just liked the way those shirts looked.

The one problem with being Italian and a cotton knit fan was that I tend to sweat…a lot. And in case you don’t know, cotton-knit fabrics are not the best for heavy perspiration (first, there’s a map of Hawaii seeping through your shirt, then it turns into a map of Africa…before you know it, your entire shirt is soaked).

So when the new “moisture-wicking” shirts started to get popular about a decade ago, you would think I’d be all over them…but I was stubborn. I didn’t necessarily like the styles and stayed the course with my sweat-laden cotton knit shirts. Until finally, after an extremely humid day out on the links a few years ago, I bought an inexpensive moisture-wicker at Target and I was sold.

Today, moisture-wicking technology is only the beginning. Performance shirts these days are not only moisture-wicking, but also antimicrobial and offer UV protection to boot. My sweat glands being what they are, I couldn’t wait to jump on this latest and greatest in performance golf shirt technology.

But these types of shirts can cost a nice chunk of change – which ones are worthy? Well, I would say it’s all about a company you trust. Sure, Nike and Adidas sell these types of shirts, but you’re paying for the name brand in those cases. What about golf-specific brands?

Two such golf performance brands are Oxford Golf and L.O.F.T. Golf. Oxford Golf established itself in pro shops throughout country and has recently launched its online store. To help promote their new site, the nice folks over at Oxford Golf sent me one of their shirts to test out.

Oxford Golf represents the serious side of golf – their shirts are smooth as silk and every time I slip it over my head, I feel as though I’m standing in front of some dark mahogany locker in some private country club somewhere. As far from the truth as that image is, their polos are simply wonderful to wear.

Meanwhile, L.O.F.T. Golf (an acronym for Lack OF Talent) represents the average Joe. Their polos have a little fun built into them with zesty colors and the “I don’t take myself too seriously” stick figure logo. Seeing as LOFT Golf and Golfstinks have a similar ethos, they also decided to send me a shirt to test out.

Despite being a less expensive performance polo, L.O.F.T. Golf shirts are still moisture-wicking, antimicrobial, offer UV protection, and are antistatic. In addition, L.O.F.T. Golf cuts their shirts two inches longer to ensure it stays tucked in during your follow-through! Plus, the wearability is great.

Bottom line, both golf shirts are fantastic and solid performance-wear apparel. Which brings me to the best part: We’d like a couple of you to own these shirts…for free! As most of our contests go, head on over to our Facebook page (“Like” us if you haven’t already) and “Like” the post on our wall entitled “Win a FREE Performance Golf Shirt” – that’s it!

We’ll select two random winners on Thursday (5/10/12) – one will receive a performance golf shirt* from Oxford Golf and the other will receive a performance golf shirt* from L.O.F.T. Golf!

Good luck!

*Giveaway shirts are in size mens large only.

You Look Like You’re Going Golfing?!

November 14, 2011 | By Chris Chirico | 2 Comments

Do you ever watch Curb Your Enthusiasm? If not, you should. If you do, do you remember that episode when Larry tells people he’s not golfing, but he dresses in khakis and a polo so everyone thinks he’s lying? Despite his explanation that he just likes the outfit, no one believes him. It’s a great episode.

Funny thing happened today. I’m in a store with my kids when one of them says to me “I think that guy is going golfing.” I ask what makes him think that. Sure enough, the answer is “Look what he’s wearing.” So I look over and, of course, find a guy wearing.., yup, you guessed it…khakis and a polo. That situation immediately makes me think of the “Curb” episode.

But, thinking into the situation even further, I start to realize that several days a week, this could be me as well. I go to work looking like this many times. It’s a pair of khakis or dress slacks and either a button-down shirt or a polo. On the days I choose to go with the polo, even my boss would make comments – “You golfing after work?” or “What, do you plan on leaving early today?”

But I guess that’s good for a few reasons. One being, even if I am going golfing, I can lie to a person with whom I may not feel like playing golf. I can simply say “No, I’m not playing today. I’m working.”

But seriously, dressing that way does give me the ability to be ready to hit the links at any moment. I can get a call at work, and within minutes of leaving, I’m on the first tee! When the phone rings, it’s like Batman seeing the Bat Signal!

I think that’s a testament to looking at golf as an every man’s game rather than with the “rich man’s game” connotation. The fact that any one of us can pretty much step away from our desks and step onto a golf course, doing not much more than changing our shoes, speaks volumes to the access we all have to this great game. Sure, it’s not an inexpensive sport, but if you play the right courses, it’s not exactly a bank-breaker either.

So keep in mind for next year to get yourself a few extra polo’s. Wear ’em to work, keep one in your car, do whatever you gotta do to be prepared. Then, you too can be Batman!

Swing ’til you’re happy!
