The Dilemma of The Masters

April 8, 2015 | By Greg D'Andrea | 2 Comments

Augusta National is known for both it's beauty and discrimination.
Augusta National is known for both its beauty and discrimination.

For the past few days, people that don’t even play golf – that don’t even know how to hold a club – are coming up to me and saying things like, “Hey, it’s Masters week…aren’t you excited?” This is proof The Masters has transcended sports – it’s the closest thing golf has to the Super Bowl or Final Four, where even non-sports fans are vaguely aware of its existence.

But as the saying goes: “With great power comes great responsibility.” And I’m not so sure this tournament is putting golf’s best foot forward. While there’s good in The Masters, there’s also a dark side.

For starters, The Masters is, in fact, the best marketing tool the industry has to kick-off the golf season. Think about it: Just as the ground is thawing in the northern part of the world, here comes the most popular tournament of the year to help get the proverbial golf juices flowing.

In addition, the event is held at one of the most beautiful golf clubs in the world – Augusta National. When the tournament is held in early April, Georgia is already in the full bloom of spring – with magnolias and azaleas adding magnificent highlights to a lush, emerald-green grass backdrop (and if spring is late, they’ll just get the spray paint out…).

Of course, Augusta National is also the poster child for every single negative golf stereotype…like, ever. It didn’t allow African Americans until the 1990’s. It didn’t allow women until 2012 (and when finally doing so, it pulled off what can be called one of the biggest public relations stunts in golf by naming Condoleeza Rice as a member…who is both black and a woman).

And if having a membership of predominately white men doesn’t personify the golf stereotype enough, the invitation-only club features names that reek of money…Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to name just two. So the equation would look something like this: White + Rich + Men = Augusta. And if Augusta = Golf (as many would agree), then Golf = White + Rich + Men.

Thus, The Masters is a catch-22 for the golf industry. On the one hand, it’s the kick-start the game desperately needs at the beginning of each season. Yet on the other hand, the legendary course has a history in stark contrast to how the golf industry wants to grow – in particular to minorities and women.

Yet The Masters influences golfers all over the world. After all, Augusta National is easy on the eyes and beautiflul in both appearance and layout. Mere images of Amen Corner fill your head with blissful daydreams – of navigating those cushy fairways – every step so magical you’re truly concerned that soft spikes aren’t soft enough.

Oh what we golfers wouldn’t give to experience this oasis of a course that offers such contrast to our local munis. Why can’t your club look like this? Well, it can – you just wouldn’t be able to afford it anymore.

This is a cruel coincidence of The Masters – the notion that all of which inspires us each spring is very rarely (if ever) accessable to the average golfer. In fact, Augusta National has set such high grooming standards for itself that it must resort to camouflaging its blemishes just to maintain appearances.

All this has led to the “Augusta Effect” – the notion that golfers have come to expect impossibly high standards of their local course from what they see on their HDTV each spring. This, in turn, has ultimately led to higher greens fees throughout the game.

While still struggling to overcome recent economic woes, golfers and the golf industry alike are left trying to live up to expectations they can no longer afford. A catch-22 indeed. There’s a gigantic rift between what made golf what it is today and where it needs to go for tomorrow.

Despite this however, The Masters has ultimately bled into the American mainstream. It, for better or worse, has helped put golf on the map for the general public. For this, it will forever be synonymous with both the start of the golf season and the beauty this game has to offer.

It’s just too bad the host course has such an unsavory past.

When Hacks Dress Like Pros

April 9, 2014 | By Greg D'Andrea | 2 Comments

IMG_2366We here at GolfStinks get sent free golf apparel all the time. And most of the time it’s a single item – a new pair of golf shoes, or the latest sport sunglasses. But recently, we received an entire outfit!

And not just any outfit – but truly something you’d see the pros wear – in fact (according the the folks who reached out to us), you’ll see tour pro Webb Simpson sporting this new line of apparel this very week at The Masters! How could I possibly pass up the opportunity to try it on and snap a few photos?

Courtesy of IZOD, we received a hat, shirt and pants so that we can help “bring The Masters tradition and pageantry to the masses.” Seriously, that’s what they told us.

I don’t know about you, but whenever I see someone show up to the course dressed like they’re on the tour, I immediately know they won’t break 100. But we’re always telling golfers to go out and have fun on the course – and if dressing like a pro can help you do that, then I say go for it.

So that being said – Stinky Golfer Greg (AKA me) is sporting an IZOD Stripe Polo (in Haute Red) and IZOD straight fit Schiffli Flag Pants (I honestly love history and have the “Betsy Ross” U.S. flag flying outside my house…and now on my pants too). Should note the belt was received separately, courtesy of our friends at Back9Network.

Retail, the pants and shirt will run you $130 total. That’s probably a bit pricey for the average hack, but I noticed with some sales going on, you can actually get both for around $100. Is it worth it? Well that’s up to you but the quality is certainly there.

I’m wearing this outfit as I type and it’s pretty darn comfortable…I’m willing to bet I’d be pretty comfy out on the course too. Now, the big question is: Would I actually wear this out on the course? Well the shirt for sure – it’s not too loud and very easy on the skin. As for the pants? Let’s just say they will be more of a novelty in my house (especially on the 4th of July) rather than a conversation starter on the course.

It will be interesting to see if Mr. Simpson wears this outfit during The Masters though. If so, I’ll be rooting for him!

Is The Masters The Official Kickoff To Golf Season?

Well, it’s that time of year again – it’s Masters Week.  Is it just me or does this week seem to be when everything golf seems to really get moving.  I mean that from the perspective of the pro tours as well as the hacks like me who don’t have the opportunity to play golf year-round.  It’s like we sit around in hibernation all winter long, but once we begin hearing talk of the most popular golf tournament of the year, we all begin to remember where we spend a portion of our weekends all summer long.

On the pro tour, this is the one that really seems to spark the interest of golf fans.  Sure, there has already been several tournaments so far this year, but let’s face it…the Puerto Rico Open doesn’t quite get the juices flowing like The Masters does, am I right?  As I’ve mentioned many times, I don’t particularly care for watching golf on TV, but I’ll make an exception for The Masters.  But honestly, until this week…I pay little to no attention to pro golf.

But as far as us hacks tearing up our local courses, for those of us up north, we haven’t played golf in roughly five months.  So it’s this week that our golf blood really gets flowing.  It’s like we use Masters week as our official kickoff to golf season.  I haven’t been out on a course yet this year, mainly because this past weekend was the first “golfable” weekend we’ve seen yet…well, according to me anyway.  But prior commitments kept me away from the course.  However, this coming weekend will be a different story…

Even further, the golf media obviously knows what happens this week.  Does anyone seriously think that controversial Golf Digest cover was picked for this past week totally at random?  Of course not.  They knew exactly what they were doing.  Don’t get me wrong, for all of the problems I have with the idea of it in general, if they were going to do it, then it certainly was the right time to release that edition.

So in other parts of the country where golf is a year round sport, maybe this isn’t as big a deal to you as it is here.  But in the northeast, this is somewhat the beginning of golf for us.  It’s like opening day in baseball or the first Thursday night NFL game of the year.  Or maybe opening day in fishing season when the anglers are up at the crack of dawn attempting to get the best spot.  Well, it is for me anyway.  See you on the course this weekend!

POLL: Is The Masters Your Favorite Major?

With The Masters fast approaching, I thought it might be a good idea to see what your favorite major tournament is during the season. There’s always a lot of buzz around The Masters, but I figured that was due to it coinciding with the start of the new golf season too.

But recently via Twitter, one of our followers has called The Masters the March Madness of golf. Is this true? Sure, it attracts a lot of attention but some of that has to do with the course itself (Augusta National) and not necessarily the tournament.

It also has a great field of players – but don’t all the majors? And it’s at the start of the year…not the end – so it’s not a true reflection of which players have had the best year.

Still, The Masters has a certain appeal to it – be it that it kicks off the new golf season; or that it attracts a field of top players; or the fact that it’s played at a legendary golf course. Heck, I’ve written rather scathing remarks about Augusta in the past, but I still find myself watching The Masters on TV more than the others.

So, is The Masters your favorite of all the majors? Take the poll below and let us know.

What is your favorite major golf tournament?

Do You Pay To Attend A Golf Tournament?

June 24, 2013 | By Chris Chirico | 2 Comments

Travelers Championship (photo by Bröder Media Group on Flickr, CC BY 2.0)

This weekend I attended the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands for probably the fourth or fifth time.  And for the fourth or fifth time, I attended without forking over any money.  As a matter of fact, so did a few other co-workers as well as some of my company’s clients.  So that got me to wondering, how many people who attend golf tournaments actually pay to get in?

I would imagine that I’m somewhat in the minority.  But when I know I never paid to attend, the people I brought with me also didn’t pay to attend and, honestly, I can’t think of a single friend or family member who has ever paid to attend, then the minority probably isn’t so minor.  So for a golf tournament, is the gate more of an afterthought?  Now I have no idea how a tournament actually runs, but I would think with sponsorship money, then yes, it probably is.  I would imagine the gate is almost like a bonus.

Now I came across the tickets because the company I work for provides the tournament with some items they use in their off-the-course events and tents.  We give them a pretty hefty discount, and in exchange we get tickets and parking passes.  But the tournament is still paying us a good amount of money AND giving tickets away, not really “making” money.  In total, the tickets I received along with a parking pass, were valued at roughly $235.  Now I understand this isn’t The Masters, but still….that’s not exactly chump change.  And I was only one of several people in or associated with my company to receive tickets and parking passes.  I’m sure other companies do significantly more work with the tournament than mine does, so I would think they receive more tickets and passes than my company as well.  So considering all of the money that goes into everything surrounding the tournament, not too mention the $6.5 million dollar purse, how can they afford to let all these people in for free?

Well, maybe they don’t care about the gate.  Maybe they just want people there walking the course.  Maybe they just want the crowds to look good on TV and they’re willing to sacrifice the gate to make everything else look nice.  I understand that because I think about myself.  I love playing golf, but I’m not much of a fan of watching golf.  So chances are slim that I’m going to pay to watch it.  And when you consider it’s going to cost me a minimum of $39 to get in the door before you factor in parking, food and drinks, the chances drop to almost zero.  And double the ticket price if I want to get into a sponsors club!  Now compared to some larger tournaments, this may not seem like much.  But again, for someone who doesn’t watch golf to begin with, that’s no small amount.

But there’s one aspect where I’m going to give a lot of credit to the Travelers.  I’m not sure how many other tournaments do this, but they let all kids, 15 and under, in for free.  I like this for two reasons – 1. When most places have a “kids free” thing going on, it’s 12 and under.  So they’re extending this by three years.  2.  Allowing kids in for free is more motivation to bring your kids along and expose them further to the game.  In order to keep this great game alive well into the future, we need to keep the kids interested.  And if you can do it for free, then you have no excuse not too.
