When Hacks Dress Like Pros

April 9, 2014 | By Greg D'Andrea | 2 Comments

IMG_2366We here at GolfStinks get sent free golf apparel all the time. And most of the time it’s a single item – a new pair of golf shoes, or the latest sport sunglasses. But recently, we received an entire outfit!

And not just any outfit – but truly something you’d see the pros wear – in fact (according the the folks who reached out to us), you’ll see tour pro Webb Simpson sporting this new line of apparel this very week at The Masters! How could I possibly pass up the opportunity to try it on and snap a few photos?

Courtesy of IZOD, we received a hat, shirt and pants so that we can help “bring The Masters tradition and pageantry to the masses.” Seriously, that’s what they told us.

I don’t know about you, but whenever I see someone show up to the course dressed like they’re on the tour, I immediately know they won’t break 100. But we’re always telling golfers to go out and have fun on the course – and if dressing like a pro can help you do that, then I say go for it.

So that being said – Stinky Golfer Greg (AKA me) is sporting an IZOD Stripe Polo (in Haute Red) and IZOD straight fit Schiffli Flag Pants (I honestly love history and have the “Betsy Ross” U.S. flag flying outside my house…and now on my pants too). Should note the belt was received separately, courtesy of our friends at Back9Network.

Retail, the pants and shirt will run you $130 total. That’s probably a bit pricey for the average hack, but I noticed with some sales going on, you can actually get both for around $100. Is it worth it? Well that’s up to you but the quality is certainly there.

I’m wearing this outfit as I type and it’s pretty darn comfortable…I’m willing to bet I’d be pretty comfy out on the course too. Now, the big question is: Would I actually wear this out on the course? Well the shirt for sure – it’s not too loud and very easy on the skin. As for the pants? Let’s just say they will be more of a novelty in my house (especially on the 4th of July) rather than a conversation starter on the course.

It will be interesting to see if Mr. Simpson wears this outfit during The Masters though. If so, I’ll be rooting for him!

Compassion At Kapalua

January 10, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

webb Isaiah hatAmidst all the money and notoriety professional sports can bring an individual, it’s great to know some haven’t let that get in the way of being human. Life has its ups and downs and for Paul Tesori and wife Michelle, those ups and downs came a little too close to each other. As you may or may not know, Paul is 2012 U.S. Open champ Webb Simpson’s caddie and good friend, a former tour pro and father to newborn son, Isaiah.

Shortly after Isaiah was born, he was rushed to the ICU because he started having seizures. Unfortunately, this happened right when Paul and Webb were headed to Hawaii for the Tournament of Champions. Naturally, Tesori would not be able to attend and Webb, in a show of support and friendship, considered withdrawing from the tournament.

Instead of withdrawing and at the request of Paul, Webb decided to go out and play for Isaiah. Not only did Simpson draw on Isaiah’s fighting spirit for inspiration, Ted Scott, Bubba Watson’s caddie and friend to Paul Tesori, jumped in and held down bag duties for Webb during this trying time. As a side note, I’m getting goosebumps and a little emotional writing about this.

Hat’s off to the Tesori family, Webb and Ted for handling the situation with dignity and class! In the end, it’s all about being surrounded with real people. Forget the money, forget the fame and forget whatever else distracts us from being us, nothing can come close to the feeling of being loved. Little Isaiah should be proud, he’s got quite a fan club.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!

The Road To The PGA Championship

October 10, 2011 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

It’s Sunday afternoon and me and a couple buddies are watching my Patriots finish off the Jets, their biggest and most hated rival. During the game, we’re talking about some other teams (one of the guys is a Cowboys fan and the other is a Vikings fan) and some other sports – namely the MLB playoffs.

It’s during these discussions that I start to consider the regular season schedules and playoff scenarios of the major sports in the U.S. For some reason, I compare this to golf, particularly, the PGA Tour.

Back in February I wrote a post about the need for a real PGA Championship. The question remaining though was, how do you get there? Is the final tournament based on the world golf rankings? Is it based on the money leaders? Hopefully not. But if not either of these, what then? Well, I’ve added another idea to the mix, but it would require a radical change.

Currently, we play Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday tournaments. At the end of the tournament we emerge with one winner. But what if we used those days to play a series of one-on-one matches? What if a player could emerge from a weekend with a record, say 3-1, rather than finish “16th, nine shots back.” What if, rather than a money list or a ranking system that no one understands, there were actual golf “standings” with a win-loss-tie record?

I’m sorry but, whether you are a golf purist or not, I feel like I’m onto something here. Imagine opening up the sports page of your local newspaper or checking the standing on your favorite sports/golf website, and instead of seeing Luke Donald is #1 on the money list at $5,837,214.50 with Webb Simpson in second trailing by $68,971, you this:

PGA Tour Standings

Luke Donald 52-35-4

Webb Simpson 48-36-7

Nick Watney 47-36-8

Etc….

I gotta tell ya, this is a hell of a lot more interesting than looking at a money list. It’s a hell of a lot more interesting than looking at a ranking list. And it sure makes each match mean a lot more when you are working your way toward an actual PGA Championship. Plus on Sundays, when many players are out of reach of the tournament win, this format would give each player a shot at still playing for an individual win rather than an additional $500 or $1000.

Each player becomes, for lack of a better term, a one-man-team. An individual rather than a nameless face in the crowd. Players will have a chance to pull away from the pack to give themselves better playoff seedings. And guys who are lower in the standings have the opportunity to play spoiler.

OK, so it’s still a work in progress. But it’s also a refreshing change to a stale sport. I’ve still got a few kinks to work out, but I’m sure I’m onto something. I know there are going to be plenty who hate this idea. But I also know there will be many who may see some potential. But in the end, all I’m trying to do is come up with some ideas to pump some new life into a great but fading game. And hey, whether you agree with me or not, you sure can’t fault me for that.

Swing ’til you’re happy!
