Golf: Art Vs. Science

August 29, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

Is golf hard because you use both halves of your brain?

In the culinary world, it is said that cooking is an art and baking is a science. In the past decade or so some chefs have achieved levels of rock star status by letting their creative side run wild whereas any chance for a baker to be successful they primarily have to rely on precise measurements and formula-like recipes. Shifting this notion over to the golf world, would we consider golfers more like artists or scientists?

I believe the answer falls right in the middle. A great golfer has the ability to find a balance between both worlds. A long time ago, I met an older gentleman who owned/ran a driving range and gave lessons as well. He always stressed the importance of balance in golf and that has stuck with me throughout my years of hacking up fairways. Granted, while my balance has had some rather unspectacular moments, I do recognize the importance of it.

So what about the art/science thing? Pro tour players are some of the best examples to look at. Let’s take one of my personal favorites – good ol’ lefty! Phil Mickelson is known to be pretty crafty with his wedges yet he is also one for keeping with tradition and playing it where it lies as seen in his recent unsuccessful beer tent to bunker shot. He could have easily listened to the logical right side of his brain and took the drop but hey…a true artist understands risk-reward.

As with everything, the balance between art and science in a golf sense is relative. Although our intuition might lead us to believe 50-50 when we think balance but actually the ratio varies drastically from golfer to golfer. Looking at players like Vijay, Rory, Phil or Tiger, we can see the calculated scientific approach to their shot making. It’s just when the ball doesn’t end up where they intended that the transition to creative shot maker kicks in and a true master piece is painted. Those tricky little devils…

Golf Pros Dicked Over By Dick’s

July 25, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 2 Comments

dicksIt’s no secret our country and perhaps 85% or better of the rest of the world is suffering from a down economy. Considering the situation, most turn to basic financial survival instincts and resort to cutting back spending by starting with the luxuries. Unfortunately golf tends to fall into this category.

As a matter of fact, Dick’s Sporting Goods recently laid off around 560 golf pros from their stores (in case you didn’t know, Dick’s employed actual PGA pros at their stores, up until this week that is, to distinguish themselves from an online outlet). Their reasoning for the mass cannings? According to a story by ESPN, Dick’s blames the economy, less people playing, too many products flooding the market and a downward trend in their golf equipment sales.

After hearing of this, we connected with someone (a golf pro who shall remain anonymous) that just happen to be one of the Dick’s casualties this week. Here’s what he had to say:

1. How do you feel Dick’s handled the situation?

“I thought they could have changed our role before they laid all of us off. They still sell equipment that many customers seek advice on. Which ball should I play? What loft is a sand wedge? As it was, I was already one of two people to cover an entire floor. I carried more kayaks down than golf clubs at times. Tennis was given to golf to cover and sell as well. So in my opinion, since your gonna staff it anyways, why not someone who knows what they’re doing? The company strives for a customer service number – who better to service people but a golf professional. I think they should have looked at some of their processes to save money. For example, each week the regional manager would have a conference call with corp[orate], then they would have a conference call with the district managers, then they would have a call with store managers who relay the information to the dept manager, who has an hourly associate do the task. Seems like a big waste of corp[orate] dollars to me.”

2. Dick’s attributed the layoffs to the game’s dwindling popularity – were you able to witness any slow-down at the store?

“I was at the driving range on a Wednesday afternoon and just about all the bays were full. I couldn’t get a tee time because the local course was booked. I think people are still playing. While I was there, everyday a steady flow of people came through the store. In my opinion, the rule restrictions out on clubs years ago changed the market. While the companies all claim that the new models are better etc., in most peoples eyes it wasn’t much better than the clubs they purchase a couple of years ago. If they did like the new models, most buyers realized that the price would be half in 6 months. They should have given the pros more say in what sells. For years I begged them to send me wide shoes. One style was available in wide in the store. So just about every Friday, someone would come in looking for shoes for the weekend and left with nothing.”

Hmmmm. So now that we have (kind of) heard both sides to the story, I almost forgot to mention another reason that Dick’s used as part of justifying their layoffs: The decline of Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods?!?! I mean I kind of get it but it’s a tough sell to say part of the reason a pro lost their job is due to the decline of Tiger Woods. Regardless, we want to wish all those involved a quick return to the job they love.

So, how do we turn this negative into a positive? I like to refer to Warren Buffet’s theory of “Buy when there’s blood in the streets.” Obviously this refers to the calculated purchasing of stocks when everyone is selling, but relating this theory to golf, now is a good time to get in.

Many golf clubs, associations and instructors are dropping their prices to attract more golfers back. So if you’re looking for those golf lessons or club to join, now might be a good time to do so. Hey, it worked for Warren Buffet…

Golf, Emotion & That Guy.

May 2, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

Golf Fan Dressed Like GolferWe’re all familiar with tour pro’s celebrating after dropping the clutch putt. From Payne Stewart’s one legged fist pump to Tiger Woods’ upper cut. There’s no denying the emotion running through them at any given moment but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking more about the viewers and the fans.

Most major sports in the U.S. have their die hard fans. Maybe it’s just me but I really don’t see that with golf…or maybe not enough. If you travel to Europe and walk into any bar and their is a soccer game on, you will see emotion on an exaggerated level compared to what we are used to here. Trust me, I’ve witnessed it first hand.

It could be golf doesn’t have that certain factor in its DNA that elevates our excitement levels. Or maybe it does and just needs a catalyst to stoke the flame a bit. Golf needs “that guy” –  someone who is always at your favorite watering hole going off on a vitriolic harangue (sorry for the SAT words) about something sport related. Now, we just need that guy to add a little golf into his repertoire of tirades.

You see, golf might never reach the status of baseball, football or basketball’s bar room debates but it’s got water polo in its sites…kidding. Hopefully in time, we will see more people speaking about golf enthusiastically. Even if it’s about John Daly’s wardrobe.

No Tiger, No Fans?

April 21, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 4 Comments

I think we can all agree that when we are watching the PGA Tour, we are watching the highest level of professional golf we are likely to see.  And that probably goes double for a major.  Face it, the absolute worst player on the tour will still wipe the floor with most any of us.  These guys are simply the best.  So why is it that so many viewers need to have Tiger Woods there, or they’re not interested in watching?  Is a large collective of most of the best players in the world not good enough?

Obviously, I’m referring to The Masters and the fact that Tiger Woods did not play due to surgery (as well as Mickelson not making the cut).  The result?  The lowest ratings for a Masters tournament since 1993.  I wonder why this is?  I get that he is certainly the most popular player in the game, as well as arguably still the best.  But are that many people electing not to tune in if he’s not there?  What about all of the other great golfers who are there?  No love for Bubba?  Fowler?  McIlroy?

This is the reason why the PGA needs to do a better job of hyping more players on the tour.  Once the most hyped player doesn’t participate, despite the fact he hasn’t won the tournament since 2005, too many people no longer care.  So again, these are the greatest players in the world…but no one cares.  When there’s an NFL game in which Tom Brady or Peyton Manning isn’t involved, people still watch, right?  Why is it different for golf and golf tournaments?  Take a look at the numbers.  When you really look at final scores and the total number of strokes, the difference between first and thirtieth is only a matter of about three strokes per round.  Is that really much of a difference form a skill level standpoint?  I’m sorry, but it’s not.  So what exactly do these so-called fans think they’re missing?  It’s as if they are more caught up in the off-the-course Tiger hype than what he should be known for, which is golf.

Speaking of so-called fans, I saw an idiotic comment on another post proving my point.  This person claims they would rather watch Tiger shoot 74 than a “no name guy” shoot 70.  So basically you’re telling me, just because a specific golfer is playing, you would rather watch bad golf than a lesser named player having a better round?  I’m sorry, but that means you are not a fan of the game.

If anything, this should be an eye opener for the PGA.  After all, Tiger is not going to be around forever.  And if this is a sign of things to come when he does decide to hang up his spikes, then the tour is going to be in some real trouble.  They’d better get to work sooner rather than later.

Tiger: Hurt, Injured or Neither?

March 3, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

I’m lucky enough to be pretty healthy.  I don’t have any ailments, other than being a bit overweight…but I’m working on that!  What I mean is, I’m healthy all-around.  Like all of us, I have days where I may be a little under the weather.  But it’s very rare that I actually get “sick.”  Rare enough that my boss probably wouldn’t believe me if I was to call out of work for the day.  I’ve been with my company for about four years and have yet to take a sick day.  Well, that’s not entirely true.  I did take one.  But I used it to play golf on a Monday.  And my boss was well aware.  So I can understand him not believing me.

What I don’t understand is why people don’t believe Tiger Woods when he says he’s hurt.  He’s the #1 player in the world.  It takes work and talent to get there.  So when he pulled out of the Honda Classic, why, instead of understanding that he was struggling due to a known back injury, did many people react like he was full of crap?  I began seeing all kinds of “Tiger is a baby” comments (along with various other descriptions I won’t say here) popping up on social media right away.  Why the animosity?

Is it because he is the worlds #1 ranked player?  That could be.  I mean, the #1 always has a target on their back.  And it seems to be the American way to build someone up only to tear them down.  Or maybe it’s because people still hold a grudge against him for the past mistakes in his personal life?  I suppose that’s a reason.  Because he’s a celebrity, everything he does wrong stands out more and is remembered for a longer period of time.  Or maybe it’s simply because people just genuinely think he’s full of crap.  They think he genuinely faked an injury because he wasn’t playing well and had no chance.  I suppose that’s possible.  After all, it’s not like he needs the money.  He can walk away from a tournament and it certainly won’t hurt his wallet any.

It seems as though many people have these thoughts in the back of their minds and aren’t taking into consideration that he may actually be hurt.  But hurt enough to not finish the last five holes?  I don’t know.  I’m not even going to form an opinion on it.  But I will say this – There’s a difference between being hurt and being injured.  You play when you’re hurt.  And when you walk away with only five holes remaining after having a bad round…well, you can see how certain opinions can be formed.  One can only hope that he’s not using the injury as an excuse for poor play.

Swing ’til you’re happy!
