Did Dad Golf On Father’s Day?

June 16, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

thIt’s probably not much of a stretch to figure that most of us golfing dads can’t think of many better Father’s Day gifts (within reason) than a trip out to the links.  Me included.  Whether it be playing a round with the kids, or them just giving you a vacation day from your usual fatherly duties and sending you on your way to the course.  Each year, that’s exactly what’s happened in my house.  I’d pack up the clubs with my boys, or they’d tell me to get the heck out of the house, play some golf, and either a nice home-cooked meal or reservations at one of my favorite restaurants would be awaiting me upon my return.

But this year we did things a little differently.  This year there was a new approach to the Father’s Day golf round.  This year, we didn’t play golf.  We took this Father’s Day off.  Instead, we played putt-putt golf the day before.  I slept in on Father’s Day morning.  I went out and did a few things I wanted to do, then came home and took a little nap on the couch while I watched a baseball game.  The kids woke me up when that nice home-cooked meal was ready.  I followed that by hitting the couch again waiting for game five of the NBA Finals to get underway.  Yup…I did almost nothing on Father’s Day….and it was wonderful.

Now, I’m not trying to start a new tradition here.  Just taking a well-deserved day off from everything.  Next Father’s Day…I’ll probably be back out there.  Actually, who am I kidding…I might take a day off this week and get out there to make up for not playing today!

Anyway, we here at Golfstinks really just want to take a minute to say Happy Father’s Day to all the deserving dads out there who could use a day off from their everyday lives.  If you didn’t play golf, hopefully you relaxed.  If you did play golf, hopefully you played well.  Although…what does that matter?  You were playing golf.  What better day to enjoy a day meant for you?

Swing ’til you’re happy!

Golfing Dads…

June 14, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | 3 Comments

Can golf be as American as...
Can golf be as American as…

Once a year we take a day to thank our dads. They’re the ones, in most cases, who took us to our first ball game. They showed us how to throw a ball, swing a golf club, and spit (indirectly and more by example). Thinking back, what could be more American? Well, in my case none of this sounds familiar, except for the spitting. 🙂

The baseball and apple pie stereotype of growing up American were substituted for football (a.k.a. soccer) and sfogliatelle. See, my dad came to the U.S. in his late 20’s via a few year stay in England after leaving his home in Italy. Oddly enough this not so stereotypical upbringing is also very American. The diversity is why I love this country.

After a recent conversation with my dad, I walked away laughing. My father wants to start golfing and asked me to take him. Normally, it’s our dads who show us how to golf and swing a club. Now the roles are reversed. This should be interesting. Should I get revenge for the times he’s embarassed me as a kid? Tempting, but karma can be a mother.

Well, it’s off to the old track with the old man. Since we got the spitting down pat, I’ll start with the fundamentals…proper use of four letter words. Happy Father’s Day!

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!

What’s Your Favorite Golf Experience with Dad?

With all the wisdom of being an adult, it’s so easy to see what golf and Father’s Day have in common. Take a second and think back to the days when you were little; Remember the times you spent with your father? Did you feel a closeness to him? Did he engage you with that fatherly camaraderie? I hope the answer is yes.

When I was young, dad introduced me to the game of golf in style: I got my own 30-year-old clubs with a 50-year-old bag that smelled like moth balls, exhaust and mildew (fairly typically, no)?

I would proudly pack my ancient tools in his trunk and he’d drive us to the local golf range. We’d split a bucket of balls and I would make a game out of it; seeing how many I could hit in a row, or how far I could hit them. I would run up to the ball and swing as hard as my little body could swing the club…only to see the ball bounce five feet in front of me! But that wouldn’t faze me – with a smile on my face I would look up at him and say, “Hey dad, I hit the ball!” and his response was nothing but pride; “At ‘a boy son.”

When I got a little older, dad would help me with my swing, and teach me all the rules and etiquette. I remember one Father’s Day in particular, when I asked dad to go golfing with me. It was a warm, sunny day – probably around 80 degrees with a slight breeze and (can you believe this?) no one on the course! When is there ever no one on the course? On a Sunday? On Father’s Day no less???

Well, it truly was my father’s day that day – he shot par; knocked in a shot from 50 yards; and sunk putts from 20 and 30 feet like he was a pro! Needless to say, he beat me by multiple strokes. After that, he took me out for food and ice cream. I may have been young, but I realized that day my dad was someone special – regardless of the fact he played so well. It’s a realization that’s never left me, and I’m glad golf was able help reveal it to me.

Happy Father’s Day, and please share with us your favorite golf experience with dad.
