When Hacks Dress Like Pros

IMG_2366We here at GolfStinks get sent free golf apparel all the time. And most of the time it’s a single item – a new pair of golf shoes, or the latest sport sunglasses. But recently, we received an entire outfit!

And not just any outfit – but truly something you’d see the pros wear – in fact (according the the folks who reached out to us), you’ll see tour pro Webb Simpson sporting this new line of apparel this very week at The Masters! How could I possibly pass up the opportunity to try it on and snap a few photos?

Courtesy of IZOD, we received a hat, shirt and pants so that we can help “bring The Masters tradition and pageantry to the masses.” Seriously, that’s what they told us.

I don’t know about you, but whenever I see someone show up to the course dressed like they’re on the tour, I immediately know they won’t break 100. But we’re always telling golfers to go out and have fun on the course – and if dressing like a pro can help you do that, then I say go for it.

So that being said – Stinky Golfer Greg (AKA me) is sporting an IZOD Stripe Polo (in Haute Red) and IZOD straight fit Schiffli Flag Pants (I honestly love history and have the “Betsy Ross” U.S. flag flying outside my house…and now on my pants too). Should note the belt was received separately, courtesy of our friends at Back9Network.

Retail, the pants and shirt will run you $130 total. That’s probably a bit pricey for the average hack, but I noticed with some sales going on, you can actually get both for around $100. Is it worth it? Well that’s up to you but the quality is certainly there.

I’m wearing this outfit as I type and it’s pretty darn comfortable…I’m willing to bet I’d be pretty comfy out on the course too. Now, the big question is: Would I actually wear this out on the course? Well the shirt for sure – it’s not too loud and very easy on the skin. As for the pants? Let’s just say they will be more of a novelty in my house (especially on the 4th of July) rather than a conversation starter on the course.

It will be interesting to see if Mr. Simpson wears this outfit during The Masters though. If so, I’ll be rooting for him!

Is Golf Meant for the Rich?

golfstinks, golfsitnksTo many non-golfers, the title of this post has a very clear and direct answer: Yes.

But for those of us who play love this game, the answer isn’t that easy. After all, many of us don’t consider ourselves rich.

Most of us have to work for a living at a modest job – we’re not jet-setters, leisurely golfing around the globe at some exotic locale like Abu Dhabi or Thailand.  Nor do we tee-it-up daily at some hoity-toity private club where late-model luxury sedans fill the parking lot.

No sir, we drive our Honda Accord or Ford Fusion to the local public course and fork-over $60 to squeeze in 18-holes every Saturday. I say “squeeze” because inevitably we have to return home to mow the lawn before it gets too dark. Clearly we aren’t rich, so the headline of this post is a bit perplexing to us.

What we forget though, is that we’re the middle class…and we can afford golf. We can afford $125 for a pair of golf shoes every year or two; we can spend $600 or $700 on a new set of clubs every 5 to 7 years; we have a closet full of polo shirts that we already wear to work; and we have an extra 60 to 100 bucks a week to plunk down on greens fees. We may not always be happy with the costs associated with golf, but we pay them because (a) we love this game and (b) we can afford to pay them.

However, there are many, many people who cannot afford to play golf. Golf is not soccer or baseball – where you can organize a quick game at the local park. Nor is it basketball – where you can just show up at the courts down the street and play a quick pick-up game for free.

The mere fact that you have to pay to play golf sets it apart. In fact, you even have to pay to practice golf. Let’s ponder this for a second: First you pay to learn golf; then you pay to practice golf; and then you pay to actually play golf. Add to that the costs associated with clubs, balls and apparel and you begin to get the picture.

The USGA and other authoritative organizations within the industry want to grow the game. They want to bring golf to inner-city kids and others who wouldn’t normally have an opportunity to play. I say kudos to them. But this is not an easy task. The very foundational structure of golf requires the need for money. And not just initial money to learn the game – but liquid cash on hand throughout a lifetime of playing the game. We can get them started, but will they be able to continue?

Something within golf needs to change in order bring more diversity to the game. Perhaps golf course developers need to consider creating (or investing in) more 9-hole or Executive-style links – this would provide an inexpensive alternative to the typical 18-hole facility. These smaller tracts would be more cost effective to run and serve as a training ground for newer golfers and/or those who simply can’t afford 18-hole greens fees.

Funneling money to smaller-sized courses is just one possible solution – I’m sure there are many others – like removing this notion that every part of the golf course must be lush and green (AKA the Augusta effect). But ultimately, the point is something needs to change or the dream of growing the game will forever be…a dream.

So, is golf meant for the rich? Well, let’s put it this way: It’s certainly not meant for the poor.

Do Golf Retail Prices Fuel The "Rich Man’s Sport" Stereotype?

golf apparelIt was at the start of a recent round that Stinky Golfer Greg and I were poking a little fun at the foursome in front us. “Hey, who do you think is winning, the red team or blue team?” I asked Greg this referring to the foursome in front of us in which two were wearing red shirts and two were in blue. Greg responded that his money was on the blue team.

This brought up further joking regarding how, several times, one member of our foursome would have to head back inside their house and change their shirt so we don’t show up to the course looking like we’re on a team. It’s actually almost come to the point where we’ll have to be on the phone with each other before our round like a couple of school girls – “What color shirt are you wearing today?” “I’m going to wear the red one so wear a different color.” It’s pathetic really.

But further conversation regarding our shirts lead to a simple comment regarding a common stereotype of the sport. On the subject of the shirts, Greg mentions to me that he paid only $20 or so for his moisture-wicking Champion polo. I tell him that I paid the same for the Reebok shirt I was wearing at the time. He then tells me; “If this same shirt had a Nike logo on it, it would cost $50.” I agreed with him, and that led to his comment – “See, that’s why some people think golf is a rich man’s sport and don’t take it up to begin with.” I gotta say, he’s got a good point.

Every golf publication, and most golf products advertised, are for the priciest apparel and products available. Think about it. When was the last time you saw a review on a new set of $150 golf clubs? When was the last time you saw a feature on the season’s newest golf apparel, and in it was a $15 polo?

For further proof, I’ve just popped open a recent issue of Golf Magazine. Of the first ten advertisements, six of them are for golf equipment. Of the six, three of the ads are for drivers costing between $400-$500, a $700 set of clubs, a $200 fairway wood and another driver costing $300. As a matter of fact, it isn’t until you are 90-plus pages in before an “affordable” set of clubs is advertised.

Do you see what I mean? What is someone new to the sport, or just getting involved supposed to do? They are bombarded with the idea that they have to pay a lot of money to play this sport. And all you have to do to for proof of this is pick up a golf magazine.

Thankfully, my buddies who got me involved in this sport years ago had steered me in the right direction. I paid $150 for my first set of golf clubs, woods included! And I carried them for twelve or thirteen years. Now that may sound ridiculous to many of you, but even more ridiculous is that I still carry one of the clubs from that set! And it’s quite possibly the most consistent club in my bag!

I don’t think I’ve ever purchased a polo specifically for golf, and I don’t recall any of them having been one of those $50-$60 type. Had it not been for my buddies, I may have been one of those that was sucked in by the ads. And that makes me wonder how many golfers do get sucked in and feel they need to have that Tiger Woods or Ashworth polo. How many golfers go out buy a $600 set of irons, a $300 driver and $100 putter when they’re just taking up the game and aren’t even sure if they like it or not yet?

Even worse, and the real question that fuels the stereotype is, how many people never take up the game because everything they see is so damn expensive? The clubs, the apparel, the courses…everything highlighted by the golf publications (both magazines and television) is the most expensive of what’s available. It makes potential players feel that if they don’t spend more money, they will be using inferior equipment, wearing the wrong apparel and playing poor courses. But in reality, nothing could be further from the truth.

In my opinion, this is just another problem facing the golf industry. Not only is there very little going on for the average hack like myself and my golfing buddies, but there is also very little for beginners. How do you expect to attract new players to the game, when you price most of them out of it right from the start?

I hope that anyone who may be new to the game is being guided by friends like mine. Because honestly, if I had to rely on the golf publications and fell victim to the “rich man’s sport” stereotype, I would have quit the game long ago. And that’s if I ever took it up to begin with.

Swing ’til you’re happy…you can afford to if you do it right!
