Without getting too political and inciting an e-riot, I wonder if the outcome of this year’s presidential elections will help put more people on the course? It’s no secret that we’re still recovering economically and we can easily get into a heated debate as to who’s fault it is but my concern is the future.
The NGF reported in the last five years that golf (in the U.S.) has lost 4 million golfers. They also say that female golfers (U.S.) are down 23% over the past five years. When golfers were asked why they don’t play as much they’re top answers were 1) My spouse/significant other doesn’t play and 2) Congestion on the golf course.
Wait a minute, I play to get some “me” time and get away from the everyday stuff, no offense honey. And Congestion? If we are losing golfers every year wouldn’t you think that means less people on the course? Oh wait…golf course closures. Damn economy! Which brings me back to the title. When will golf see a ramp up in activity?
I can only hope that just like a lot of businesses, we are waiting to see who will be president and then return back to normal no matter who wins. I wonder if the fear of the unknown is causing us to stall and wait. Regardless if it’s Obama or Romney, the power is still in numbers. The elected officials can tell us what they think will work but it comes down to us to make it happen. Just my $0.02…

Did You See That Shot?!?!
We’ve all been there before and it’s what keeps most of us coming back. That one shot struck so perfectly we forget how bad we’re actually playing. We’ve discussed this topic before but wouldn’t it be cool to replay that shot whenever we wanted?
I was watching a show about how dashboard cameras in police cruisers have become a useful tool for both the officer and the civilian. Thanks to these cameras, a lot of questions have been answered. Was the officer justified in beating the crap out of someone? Let’s check the tapes and review. Not only that but these videos can be used for future training too.
So, what about putting a camera on our golf carts? Maybe even certain spots on the course as well? I also understand some don’t want the eye in the sky and might feel their privacy infringed upon but I thought it would be pretty cool to record yourself hitting that perfect shot. Who knows, maybe even catching a hole-in-one. Granted we’ll also be able to save those not so perfect shots for posterity too.
Golf courses can capitalize on this. They can take the raw footage, edit it and for a small fee make a nice little package for us hacks. Not only did you hit the ace…you can prove it!

Chip Shots: Stinking At Golf Takes Work.
It’s no secret stinking at golf takes work, dedication and effort. Think about it. You plan your outing then hack up a track while lugging your clubs around. For what, to lose a good 4 to 5 hours off your life? Most of us don’t play enough to be good and the ones that do still stink for the most part. I understand we enjoy it but when it comes down to brass tacks – our stinky play takes some work man!
I must be venting because the season is winding down for me. I’ll have new hope come spring time.

When Should I Get New Golf Shoes?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking anyone for what they wear but you have to admit – it can be a little funny. When it comes to golf shoes I tend to fall in the middle. Not quite the traditional “oxford” style nor the Ian Poulter purple pimped out kicks. It seems that my preference is for the could-be-a-sneaker-could-be-a-shoe style golf shoe.
Considering I golf as often as I can and have had these shoes for quite some time, when should I get new golf shoes? I’ve changed the spikes a few times and they’ve been good to me. The waterproof warranty has long since expired but they still keep my feet dry. Ok, ok…they’re beat to s**t! I’m just being stingy and don’t want to fork over the $100+ for a decent pair.
Golf shoe prices have been getting up there. Now that I’m in the market for them, I’ve noticed that you can drop a few Franklin’s on a pair. WTF?! And the different styles to choose from make it even harder. Should I get the Crocs, Chuck Taylor’s or Nike running shoe? I wouldn’t be surprised if they had Uggs, although that would be very odd. Maybe I’ll just wait for the off-season and hopefully find a better deal. We’ll see. Next season if you see someone out there with two different shoes from the discount rack, that’ll be me. Stop by and say hello.

Traffic Interferes With My Golf Game.
Literally. It messes me up. I’m not referring to the traffic that delays everything and makes me late. What I’m talking about is the traffic that zips by the roads and highways adjacent to golf courses. It make me nervous. Golf is not necessarily known as a dangerous sport but it has its moments.
I’m sure a bunch of us have heard of, witnessed someone or was on the receiving end of getting hit by a ball. Errant or not. I’m also pretty sure most of us were subjected to near misses – maybe even we were the source. This, unfortunately, is one of the few hazards of golfing.
Being the culprit of a bean-ball scares me more than being the victim. Especially when it includes the safety of others. Maybe it’s just me but I’ve noticed that courses with roads or highways within striking distance of the tee box seem to run down the left side. I’m a lefty and a hack…see my dilemma? Yes, I’ve heard all the jokes before about hitting from the wrong side but maybe there’s some truth to that.
There is a local track here that has a par 5 that just so happens to be right next to a fairly well-traveled road. Yep, you guessed it, it’s on the left side. Here’s where my problem started. I approached the tee and set up for the shot. Driver in hand, I’m ready to grip it and rip it 5 miles! Au contraire, my tee shot begins its journey straight and then with some uncanny external force, the ball drastically hooks left, right into oncoming traffic. Oh, the horror! Luckily the ball bounced in between cars and landed on someone’s lawn.
WTF! This is a serious mental obstacle for me now. Not only do I stink at the game, now I’m worried about public safety and they’re not even on the course! Maybe a little couch time will help…
