My Golf Game And The Stock Market

November 16, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

A couple of my favorite movies are Wall Street and Boiler Room. These movies have definitely played a role in influencing my interest in the stock market. Just to clarify though, my interests lie on the legal side of the trading business and NOT the illegal side as these movies might depict. That said, I figured I would get into penny stocks and try to day trade a bit. This should have been the first warning sign.

The small amounts of trading I did and the more I read into the hype and bashing on the message boards, the more I saw a parallel between my golf game and the stock market. There are factors that coexist within these two worlds and I could swear it’s the same mentality just a different outlet. No wonder I stink at both.

Starting things off with what just happens to be one of our biggest pet peeves – advice. Hey, all you Gordon Gekko and Hank Haney wanna be’s…keep it to yourself. I learned a while ago that opinions are like you know what – everyone has one. Same goes with advice. I should have known not to take a stock tip from the guy next to me at the bar.

Another factor is performance. Most of the stocks I’ve invested in and my golf game seem to follow the same trend. Once I buy in or once I step foot on the course there’s a general feeling of excitement. I think my penny stock will go through the roof and I’ll shoot an incredible round. Well, that all changes when reality sets in and everything goes down hill…quickly.

So much for rubbing elbows with Jim Cramer and Phil Mickelson.

Chip Shots: Stinking At Golf Takes Work.

October 11, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

It’s no secret stinking at golf takes work, dedication and effort.  Think about it. You plan your outing then hack up a track while lugging your clubs around. For what, to lose a good 4 to 5 hours off your life? Most of us don’t play enough to be good and the ones that do still stink for the most part. I understand we enjoy it but when it comes down to brass tacks – our stinky play takes some work man!

I must be venting because the season is winding down for me. I’ll have new hope come spring time.

Golf Gadgets; WTF? (Part 3)

March 9, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 3 Comments

Ok, it’s been a while since we did one of these but it’s back. In our 3rd installment, we will delve further into the “golf training aid” market and have a look at what will bring the tour within reach for us hacks. Ding! Ding! Let’s get it on!

What They Say:Using a proven and unique frame and brace design, several new features have been incorporated into the newCentreCup Pro so it promotesboth the ‘straight-back and straight-through’ PILS putting stroke and the ‘inside-square-inside’ stroke.CentreCup Pro is the upgradedversion of the best-selling CentreCup®putting aid and delivers a pure putting stroke every time – whichever method a teaching professional recommends.

What I Say: I got a better method for you. Get drunk, I’ll slump you over a lowered pull up bar and you can putt til you puke. Hey, at least you’ll get your money’s worth.
What They Say: I don’t know what they could possibly say about the “Power Swing Fan Training Aid.” It’s a fan…
What I Say: “It is so friggin’ hot out here today! Hey Bob, break out that fan and cool us own a bit, would ya?”
What They Say: PivotPro guides you towards a correct pivot, encouraging correct golf swing fundamentals that result in proper coiling of the upper torso against the back leg. PivotPro helps you create maximum resistance that leads to more power, consistency, proper weight distribution, and footwork. It’s like having your own professional golf instructor at your beck and call!
What I Say: Professional golf instructor at your beck and call? You’re telling me thissnow board binding on a stick is like an instructor? Hank Haney better watch out.
There it is, another successful look at golf training aids Golfstinks.com style.

"You Picked your Head Up…"

August 26, 2009 | By Pete Girotto | 4 Comments

That usually justifies a bad golf shot by an amateur. I mean really, it has nothing to do with the fact that we just stink at golf, right? “You didn ‘t rotate your wrists…”, Didn ‘t rotate my wrists…!?!? Who the…I didn ‘t know Hank Haney* was in our foursome. Thanks for the tip Skippy, now go get your shinebox! “What ‘s that? My body wasn ‘t square to the target…?” I ‘m sorry, but geometry was never my thing. Next time I ‘ll be sure to have a protractor. Here ‘s a little “reality golf lesson” for those that think they are golf instructors and must let you know what you are doing wrong.

1) If your business card does not say PGA professional (and can be confirmed), please…shut the ƒ#$% up!
2) If you have never been paid real money to give a golf lesson, please…shut the ƒ#$% up!
3) If your score is just as bad as everyone else ‘s, please…shut the ƒ#$% up!
4) If you find yourself saying ” I picked my head up” as a reason for bad golf, please…shut the ƒ#$% up!
5) And finally, if you don ‘t know who I ‘m referring to, it ‘s probably you, so please…

Now that I got that off my chest I shouldn ‘t have a problem keeping my head down.

*Hank Haney is a golf instructor to the pro ‘s…and wealthy retired pro athletes like Charles Barkley…btw, Sir Charles stinks at golf. How do I know? Well, Haney was quoted as saying “Charles ‘ swing looked worse than Helen Keller trying to read.” Don ‘t listen to that hogwash Chuck, I still believe in you…call me, we ‘ll do lunch.
