Golf: Art Vs. Science

August 29, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

Is golf hard because you use both halves of your brain?

In the culinary world, it is said that cooking is an art and baking is a science. In the past decade or so some chefs have achieved levels of rock star status by letting their creative side run wild whereas any chance for a baker to be successful they primarily have to rely on precise measurements and formula-like recipes. Shifting this notion over to the golf world, would we consider golfers more like artists or scientists?

I believe the answer falls right in the middle. A great golfer has the ability to find a balance between both worlds. A long time ago, I met an older gentleman who owned/ran a driving range and gave lessons as well. He always stressed the importance of balance in golf and that has stuck with me throughout my years of hacking up fairways. Granted, while my balance has had some rather unspectacular moments, I do recognize the importance of it.

So what about the art/science thing? Pro tour players are some of the best examples to look at. Let’s take one of my personal favorites – good ol’ lefty! Phil Mickelson is known to be pretty crafty with his wedges yet he is also one for keeping with tradition and playing it where it lies as seen in his recent unsuccessful beer tent to bunker shot. He could have easily listened to the logical right side of his brain and took the drop but hey…a true artist understands risk-reward.

As with everything, the balance between art and science in a golf sense is relative. Although our intuition might lead us to believe 50-50 when we think balance but actually the ratio varies drastically from golfer to golfer. Looking at players like Vijay, Rory, Phil or Tiger, we can see the calculated scientific approach to their shot making. It’s just when the ball doesn’t end up where they intended that the transition to creative shot maker kicks in and a true master piece is painted. Those tricky little devils…

Lost Golf Clubs & Supposed Insider Trading

June 20, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

Every once in a while I like to see what’s going on in the world of golf that doesn’t always relate to the actual game. Sometimes you get to a real good story ala Tiger Woods and his problem…where I still fail to see where the problem is. Joking! Regardless, it’s interesting to see that although some of these tour pros can be famous they still have regular joe problems.

Leading off is a rather funny tidbit of how Rory McIlroy departed Newark International Airport for the Irish Open only to land without his clubs. Somewhere between Newark, NJ and Dublin, Ireland his clubs magically separated from him. I can go on but I think his tweets to United says it all.

Hey @united landed in Dublin yesterday morning from Newark and still no golf clubs… Sort of need them this week… Can someone help!?

And finally…

Re-@united with my clubs! pic.twitter.com/TRs46rFtnO

Next in line, and I must say, I was in shock when I heard Phil Mickelson could have been tied to an insider trading investigation. No way! Lefty? Philly Mick? I don’t believe it. He comes off too good of a person. Not that I know him personally but he definitely seems that way. Granted this might not be breaking news but its definitely something new to me and quite scandalous for the golf world. Apparently, there are stories out freeing good ol’ Phil from these nasty allegations. Hopefully, it works out for you Phil…by the way I got a hot stock for ya’!

Golf, Hacks and Apps.

August 16, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

green gridThis past weekend the guys at Golfstinks.com headed out for a quick round. It was nice to have everyone together doing what we love. Although it wasn’t so nice for the course to have four hacks making a chopped salad out of the rough and fairway…and green…sorry about that. Nonetheless, the day couldn’t have been better weather-wise.

Amidst the salad making, a joke was made about misreading the greens and how I should have used my “green reading app”. That got me thinking. What if there was an actual app that did that. I’m sure some designer out there can engineer a way using the camera and gyroscope, which every smartphone has, to survey the green somehow and show where the breaks are.

Would that even be legal? I’m guessing no. This could seriously lower scores and handicaps. Not to mention change the odds for golf betting matchups. Not for nothing, companies make a living on illegal golf aids. If that’s the case they should come out with it and let the brass ban it from competitive play.

Could you imagine Phil or Tiger setting up their smartphone on a little Nike or Callaway tripod? The day that happens is the day I stop watching golf all together. Leave the gimmicks and gadgets to the suckers…I mean consumers. Oh well, off to the practice green. Now, where’s that darn smartphone…?

Catching Up On Golf.

June 21, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

strong antUsually, I’ll check in every so often and see what’s happening on the tour. For some reason, this year I’ve been following a little more than usual. Or so I thought. When did Tiger become ranked #1 again? So much for thinking I’ve been following golf this season.

After going back and checking his stats, this guy has really been doing well. I guess I’m used to the days when Tiger’s every move was broadcasted. I mean, this guy’s farts were even documented. Remember that? Maybe it was Steve Williams that broke wind but you get the point.

Moving on. Phil…WTF! All 37 of us left handed golfers in the world were counting on you maybe even some righties. That’s OK though, we still think you’re great! What can you do? Crap happens and I’ll take a 2nd place prize of half-a-mill any day. That’s the greatest thing about pro golf, you can come in 25th place and still walk away with some extra scratch in your pocket.

Even though 2nd place does pay out well, I’m sure this has reached “Eleanor” status for Mr. Mickelson. Come on man, don’t let that old saying about the bridesmaid crap be true. Dig deep brother and win a U.S. Open for the southpaws. You can do it! Win it for the Gipper too, if that helps.

That pressure must be ridiculous at times. I’ll give it to him though, he can definitely carry it. I’m sure a lot of people would have buckled under that weight like a one legged asthmatic ant with a bad back.

Ah ha! Now the picture makes sense, kind of.

Can You Stomach The Belly Putter Argument?

December 3, 2012 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

Ah, the belly putter.  Throughout generations of golfers and golf fans it has been a lightning rod of controversy.  No greater battle between two schools of thought has ever been documented.  Families have been divided.  Friendships dissolved.  Countries have gone to war.  World powers have crum….OK, I’m going a little overboard.  Actually, I’m going way overboard.  As is the heckler getting on Keegan Bradley’s case.

So let me try to understand this.  Most people haven’t given much of a crap about the belly putter in the past.  It was more of something to poke fun at than anything else.  Maybe some hardcore fans look at it differently.  But to the average or passing golf fan, we don’t really care.  It’s within the rules, so it’s fine.

But now the belly putter will be banned in a few years, so suddenly anybody using one is a cheater.  Well, at least according to the heckler.  But this reminds me of a similar situation a couple of years back involving Phil Mickelson.  Quite simply, if the rules allow it, then it’s not cheating.

Like it or not, the belly putter is a part of the game and, for the time being, it is allowed.  So to heckle someone for using it and to call them a cheater is not only rude and uncalled for, but it’s just plain stupid.  Now, if Bradley tries to sneak one into a tournament three or four years from now when they are banned, then you can say what you want.  But until then, to refer to him as a cheater is insulting.  I mean, we’re not talking about a corked bat here.  We’re not talking about steroids or PED’s.  We’re talking about a golf club that is entirely inside the lines of the golf rule book.

Me personally, I don’t care.  If it’s in the rule book, then it’s OK with me.  If he’s cheating, then he’s cheating.  But that clearly isn’t happening here.  So let’s not insult him like he’s doing something he shouldn’t be doing.  It certainly isn’t the gentlemanly thing to do.

Swing ’til you’re happy!
