Be Like Mike.

The 2014 Masters is in full swing (pun intended) and with that companies like Puma and Nike have unveiled their new threads like it’s fashion week in Milan. It seems as if the Masters is becoming more of a runway for new scripts than a tournament for golf. For those that don’t know, a script is pretty much an apparel line…I just learned that too.

So, now that I know what Nike’s players will be sporting every day of the tournament, what if they don’t make the cut? All the hoopla about what they’re wearing…what about how they’re playing? Oh yeah! I mean it’s only a major we’re talking about. Hey, at least they’ll look good.

Speaking of looking good, I knew it was only a matter of time before the golf shoe industry embraced the “Jumpman”. It’s no secret Michael Jordan is a fan of golf and even though Nike has been in the golf shoe business for a while, it’s a little different now that the Jordan brand is involved. There is almost an exclusivity factor that a lot of sneaker freaks understand.

With players like Keegan Bradley rocking his Air Jordan spikes at the Masters, this could parlay into something bigger. If Jordan brand golf shoes see a fraction of the frenzy over getting a pair of Jordan’s newest basketball shoes, Nike will corner yet another market. Oh man, I guess it really gotta be the shoes…

Can You Stomach The Belly Putter Argument?

December 3, 2012 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

Ah, the belly putter.  Throughout generations of golfers and golf fans it has been a lightning rod of controversy.  No greater battle between two schools of thought has ever been documented.  Families have been divided.  Friendships dissolved.  Countries have gone to war.  World powers have crum….OK, I’m going a little overboard.  Actually, I’m going way overboard.  As is the heckler getting on Keegan Bradley’s case.

So let me try to understand this.  Most people haven’t given much of a crap about the belly putter in the past.  It was more of something to poke fun at than anything else.  Maybe some hardcore fans look at it differently.  But to the average or passing golf fan, we don’t really care.  It’s within the rules, so it’s fine.

But now the belly putter will be banned in a few years, so suddenly anybody using one is a cheater.  Well, at least according to the heckler.  But this reminds me of a similar situation a couple of years back involving Phil Mickelson.  Quite simply, if the rules allow it, then it’s not cheating.

Like it or not, the belly putter is a part of the game and, for the time being, it is allowed.  So to heckle someone for using it and to call them a cheater is not only rude and uncalled for, but it’s just plain stupid.  Now, if Bradley tries to sneak one into a tournament three or four years from now when they are banned, then you can say what you want.  But until then, to refer to him as a cheater is insulting.  I mean, we’re not talking about a corked bat here.  We’re not talking about steroids or PED’s.  We’re talking about a golf club that is entirely inside the lines of the golf rule book.

Me personally, I don’t care.  If it’s in the rule book, then it’s OK with me.  If he’s cheating, then he’s cheating.  But that clearly isn’t happening here.  So let’s not insult him like he’s doing something he shouldn’t be doing.  It certainly isn’t the gentlemanly thing to do.

Swing ’til you’re happy!

I Might Actually Watch Golf Again…

March 2, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 2 Comments

A couple weeks back I watched a three way playoff between Haas, Mickelson and Bradley for the Northern Trust Open. This is the first time I watched golf on purpose in a long, long time. And for the first time in a long, long time I was enjoying golf on TV. Fast forward a week or so later and Stinky Golfer Chris posted about the PGA needing their own Jeremy Lin. I agree.

In the meantime, as we wait for a new star to emerge, I’m watching golf to see who will take over the throne. It’s exciting times in the pro golf universe. With all that negative hoopla the media was giving golf because Tiger couldn’t keep it in his pants, it’s actually refreshing to see a clean slate and a top spot yet to be filled. It’s all about turning the negatives into positives, right?

So, who’s it going to be? Let’s take a look at the top 5 in the FedExCup standings.

Player Events Points # of Wins # of Top 10’s Points behind Lead Reset Points
1 1 Kyle Stanley 6 935 1 2

2 2 Johnson Wagner 6 860 1 3 75
3 3 Phil Mickelson 5 807 1 2 128
4 6 Mark Wilson 6 802 1 2 133
5 4 Bill Haas 6 752 1 2 183

Isn’t this a change of pace? Kyle Stanley leading the pack. Wait…who? Kyle Stanley? Not so bad for someone that is ranked 48th in the world. What about the #1 ranked golfer in the world, Luke Donald. Again…who? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking these guys. I find it funny how golf, or the media rather hasn’t found its star in this group of leaders.

What’s the issue? Are they waiting for Tiger to mount his comeback? Come on man! It’s time for new blood. There’s a whole pool of young guns worthy of the limelight. These guys have such a great opportunity right under their noses. As long as they battle it out and vie for that top spot, the tour will make my TV channel rotation on Sunday afternoons. I just hope it stays interesting for a while.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!
