Sports Gambling Season…Wanna Bet?

February 3, 2015 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

Does sports gambling taper-off after football season?
Does sports gambling taper-off after football season?

As the Patriots walk away with their 4th Super Bowl Championship and the NFL wraps up another season, this also means the end of “sports gambling season” is drawing near. Sports gambling season? Yep, you heard right. With college and pro football out of the way, we have March Madness in a few weeks and then the NBA finals. After that, sports gambling season will go into hibernation until next September, more or less.

Now, this brings up a good point. Would golf see more gambling activity if it was a cold weather sport? As stupid as that sounds (obviously golf sucks in the cold weather) why do other warm weather sports like baseball see less action than football or basketball? I’m guessing it could be anything from the scoring system to the rules…who knows? It’s definitely not because the players are such morally upstanding athletes. I take that back, I shouldn’t let a few rotten apples spoil the bunch.

Maybe it’s just me but I see golf as an excellent sport to bet on. Hold on, let me set the record straight. I’m not telling anyone to gamble, this is just my opinion. That said, golf is ideal because it’s only one person, the scoring is double-digits and cheating is almost non-existent…as far as we know. And with websites like betfair, golf betting is also easily accessible (check out some of their unique videos featuring a ping pong-playing octopus here).

Again, I’m not saying to get on the phone with some guy named Vinny “the Ox” and bet the farm. I just find it rather odd that the cooler months seem to have more betting involved. During the warmer months, we’re too busy hacking up the local tracks that we forget about betting on sports…or maybe we’re still trying to pay off Mr. Ox before we need new knee caps.

Random Golf Thoughts From The Off-Season

January 6, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

What do you think about during the golf off-season?
What do you think about during the golf off-season?

When it comes to this time of year, the golf off-season, sometimes I just don’t know what the heck to discuss since golf is just not on the mind.  After all, I’m not out on the course, I’m not out on the range, and it’s NFL playoff time…so I’m certainly not watching any golf on TV.  It’s simply that time of year when I need a break from golf.  I don’t really want to think about it.  But…that doesn’t mean that something golf-related doesn’t cross my mind on occasion.  No complete thoughts, just random parts of thoughts.  Things like…

…the golf “off-season” to which I was just referring.  There’s not enough of one.  With this being “Wild card weekend” in the NFL, how many sports fans do you think were tuned into the Hyundai Tournament of Champions vs. NFL playoff games on Saturday and Sunday?  I mean really, what kind of television ratings were they hoping to get?  Just end the golf season before the NFL playoffs begin.  Want to try Super Bowl Sunday also?

This past weekend, we had a birthday party for my youngest.  She’s not interested in golf, but my two boys are.  So I thought to myself, maybe having a party at the indoor golf range could be an option.  Do those places do things like that?  With one of their birthdays being in the winter, that seems like a good place to bring a small group of boys, right?  There’s a small driving range, a putting green, the simulators which are basically giant video games.  Hmmm…something to consider over the next couple of months.

And speaking of the next couple of months and the indoor range, should I bother even going?  I don’t seem to get any better by going, probably because I only go once or twice during the winter – not nearly enough to make an impact.  And quite honestly, the past few times I’ve gone haven’t really been for practice.  It’s been more just for fun.  But that’s why I play, so what do I really care about…(insert your Allen Iverson reference)…practice?

See what happens when you have a golfer who’s bored in the off-season?  You get the NFL, birthday parties and Allen Iverson.  Something tells me it was a bored golfer in the off-season who invented things like disc golf, FootGolf and half the betting games in existence.  But, I guess this is to be expected.  You know what they say about idle hands…

3 Reasons Golf Falls Short Compared to Other Sports

April 22, 2013 | By Chris Chirico | 2 Comments

It's hard for golf to compete with other sports...
It’s hard for golf to compete with other sports…

About two weeks ago I was scanning through some radio stations and stopped at the sports radio show I tune into once in a while.  The hosts are talking about March Madness and how, in they’re opinion, the NCAA Tournament is the best sporting event going.  Meanwhile, they’re fielding calls from listeners agreeing or disagreeing with their choice.  Some say it’s the Super Bowl.  Some choose the World Series.  Others give their opinions on the NBA Championship or the Stanley Cup.  But one caller chose to take things in a different direction than the rest.

One caller asked why no one, other than he, were considering The Masters to be the greatest sporting event going.  While one of the hosts at least took it into consideration, the other practically laughed him off the line.  The host paying attention and going along with it even interjected that he actually prefers the U.S. Open over the Masters and considers that to be a worthy choice.  But his co-host?  Not a chance.  There was no way this guy was going to consider a golf tournament to be one of the greatest sports events of the year.  But why not?  The Masters is one of the four biggest events, arguably the biggest, in the golf year.  It’s loaded with stars of the PGA Tour, tradition and fanfare.  So why could he be talking it down?  I have a few ideas.

1. It’s too boring.  Let’s face it, watching a golf tournament on TV doesn’t really hold a candle to watching the other major sports, even if it is a major.  It’s quiet, slow-moving and honestly, we see the balls more than we see the actual players.  There’s plenty of skill and technique involved, but that doesn’t translate to the average sports fan because for all of the skill and technique there is, it doesn’t really require much athletic ability.  It’s just a tough sell, especially to sports fans who live in or close to a bigger market where professional teams from the big three sports play.

2.  The timing of The Masters.  There are two things wrong with the time of year the Masters occurs.  For starters, it happens right after The Final Four.  You can certainly argue that the NCAA Tournament is the greatest sporting event year-in and year-out.  So it’s incredibly hard to follow that up – and when you follow something as exciting as the Final Four with golf?  Well, you see the problem.

The second problem is that it occurs right at the beginning of the golf season.  We asked this a couple of weeks ago – why would the biggest tournament of the year happen right at the beginning of the season?  The timing of the sports biggest tournament just doesn’t make much sense.

3. There is no championship.  We’ve been down this road several times as well, but it matters!  There are four majors, but somehow none of them represents some type of tournament championship.  So when there are four “big” tournaments, they all end up discounting each other.  And if we can’t even decide which of the four is the most exciting in that particular sport, then how could we even try to compare it to any others?

It’s funny, but as much as I enjoy playing golf, I’m just not all that interested in watching it.  Is it possible that it’s because of the reasons above?  Maybe.  See, I need to know that the tournaments are going to mean something at the end of the year.  I don’t care who won the most money.  I don’t care what some complicated ranking system says.   I need a championship.  Now get me one of those installed at the end of the golf season and then you can start to convince me that it’s among the most exciting sporting events of the year.

A Masters Party…Yeah!

April 5, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | 2 Comments

Is this how you'd envision a party for The Masters?
Is this how you’d envision a party for The Masters?

As the Masters gets closer I’ve been thinking; Why not have a Masters party! Normally, when we associate throwing a party for a sporting event it’s usually the Super Bowl. It’s time to change that. I understand baseball and basketball could have scheduling conflicts with their championships because they are best out of 7 and fall on any given day. Not golf, my friend.

Golf tournaments start on Thursday and 99% of the time end on Sunday. It’s a set schedule we can plan around. As an added bonus there are 4 majors. That’s 4 opportunities if you ask me. It couldn’t work out any better especially considering the warmer weather during golf season.

So how does this thing go down? It’s simple, just like in golf we can approach this like a hack, amateur or pro.  As a hack,  you invite your buddies over on Sunday, throw out some grub and play drinking games that coincide with the tournament. For instance, when Tiger or whoever misses the fairway, you drink. As an amateur,  you follow the same outline as a hack but the festivities run from Saturday to Sunday. Also, you class it up a bit.  You know, have different flavor wings instead of just Buffalo and maybe a couple imported beers as well.

As a pro, it is our job to perform as such. We must adhere to very strict rules. So, following the basic outline of an amateur, we again raise the standard. No paper plates, plastic cutlery or plastic glasses. We begin on Monday and continue to Sunday. This includes “practice rounds” and the tournament. Most importantly, we are pro’s, a green jacket must be worn the whole week.

I think I’m on to something here…

I’m Taking My Golf Ball and Going Home!

March 4, 2013 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

golfstinks, golf stinksSee those tees?  They’re called Cavi-Tees.  And if I’m the marketing guy for whoever is producing or selling those things, I’m on the phone with Rory McIlroy’s agent immediately.  This whole wisdom tooth thing sounds just so silly that the best thing Rory could do right now is make fun of it himself.  I mean, come on.  A tooth?  That’s your excuse for playing poorly then quitting?  And of all sports…playing GOLF poorly?  Wow…it’s no wonder people say golfers are not athletes.

Speaking from experience, this is not something that just starts hurting all of a sudden.  Trust me…I had five wisdom teeth removed.  I know it sounds strange, unbelieveable even.  I thought I was some kind of freak, but my dentist told me he sees it about 10-12 times per year, so it’s not all that uncommon I guess.  But despite having them all removed, I worked up until the day before I had them taken out and missed only one day of work afterward…doctors orders, but I didn’t feel it was necessary.  Even further, I just watched my brother-in-law go through the same thing.  He was in pain but continued to work his physically strenuous job, even delaying his surgery a week at one point because work was just too busy.  But Rory can’t swing a golf club?

It was in 1979 when Jack Youngblood of the Los Angeles Rams famously played two playoff games and the Super Bowl on a broken fibula.  And if he hadn’t set the ultimate tough guy bar high enough, he even played the meaningless Pro Bowl a week after!  A broken leg!  And he was playing football!  But a wisdom tooth for a golfer?

To a lesser extent, it was 1985 when NFL Hall-of-Famer Ronnie Lott had his left pinky finger crushed between an opposing players helmet and his own chest pads during a game.  Another player described it as his finger having “exploded.”  I read one article which stated he actually had to pick up a piece of his finger off the field.  He went to the sideline, had it taped up and returned to the game.  Then, in the off-season, rather than have surgery that would cause him to miss the start of the the next season, he elected to have part of the finger amputated instead!

My point here?  Get the tooth removed!  It took about an hour from start to finish for me to have five of them removed!  How long could it take?  If that tooth doesn’t get removed this week, or at least by his next tournament, then I’m calling bullcrap on the whole issue.

People who are not golf fans (or are just casual fans), are looking at this story and laughing.  They’re looking at a sport like football and seeing how players play through pain in a sport that is much more physically demanding than golf.  There are players who are out there every week with a strained this or a pulled that.  A twisted something or a sprained other thing.  But a golfer’s tooth hurts and he has to leave early.

I understand that there is some pain involved with a wisdom tooth.  But no matter what way you look at it, the whole story just makes golfers look like a bunch of pansies.  Non-golf fans don’t take into account that there is a level of concentration required in order to successfully play golf, and a level of pain negatively affects that concentration.  But you know what?  They don’t care either because that’s true in every sport…not just golf, as so many would have you believe.

What I’m saying is, this whole tooth thing had better be true and it had better be a significant amount of pain.  If not, and if it comes across like just the poor excuse that it looks like now, then it’s not going to do any favors for the “golfers aren’t athletes” crowd.
