Chip Shots: There’s a Chance I Can Reach Them

September 13, 2012 | By Greg D'Andrea | Leave a Comment

There’s one in every foursome – that golfer who will wait 275 yards out for the group ahead to putt-out and clear the green. Why? Because one time in 1996, all the f’ing planets aligned and he caught his 3-wood just right to roll one up on the green from (what he claims was) 275 yards out.

In our foursome, it’s Stinky Golfer Tom. I don’t know how many times I’ve bit my tongue when Tom is waiting from some ungodly distance for the group ahead to finish putting. “I’m gonna wait – there’s a chance I can reach them.” I want to scream: “IF YOU HAD A CANNON WITH A SNIPER SCOPE ON IT YOU STILL COULDN’T HIT THEM!” But I don’t. I just wait patiently while Tom eventually hits a worm-burner 50 yards down the fairway (much to the chagrin of the foursome on the tee behind us).

Of course I know – the one time I do tell him to not worry about the group on the green and just hit, he’ll launch a missile right at them.

Golf Therapy 101

Golf got you down?
Golf got you down?

I mentioned in a recent post about the need for all non-pro golfers to take “I Stink at Golf” therapy – and I was being serious. Addressing some of your golfing problems will go a long way in helping your game.

But you don’t need to make an appointment with a shrink – no sir. Let me help you by posing some common golf problems and providing candid, life-changing advice!

Problem: I can’t hit the driver.
Advice: Yes you can. It may go straight only 10% of the time, but you can hit it. In fact, when you really get into one, it feels awesome. Well, that’s the feeling we want to hold onto – even if it only happens once a round. If you never take your driver out of your bag (or worse, if you’re like me and you went driverless for several years) you will never get that awesome feeling. Hey – it’s better to feel awesome once a round than never at all.

Problem: I’m inconsistent.
Advice: Of course you are – everyone is. Even pros are not consistent 100% of the time. The reality is something will always be off – If you’re hitting the driver decent, your irons will fail you. It’s going to happen – if you could put it all together most of the time, you’d be on tour. Accept inconsistency as a part of the game and play on.

Problem: I should play better than I do.
Advice: Bull shit. Your level of play is based on two things: Ability and effort. And your ability will only take you so far before you have to start putting in effort – and that’s usually when we start saying things like “I should play better than I do.” Could the real reason be that we’re all lazy? (See this post I penned last year).

Problem: But I can’t shoot anywhere near par.
Advice: You’re not alone. In fact, you’re in the majority. The best answer I’ve seen (which cites the reputable NGF) is this: A whopping 95% of golfers can’t break 80! More than 75% can’t break 90 and nearly 50% can’t even break 100!! So even if you can’t break 100, you have half the golfers of the world out there to help keep you company!

Don’t feel so bad now, do you? See, putting things in perspective like this really helps you go out and shoot 110 with a smile on your face – and let’s face it – enjoyment is what this game is all about!

Stinky Golfer Greg’s been playing wretched golf for more than 20 years and has come to terms with the fact that he stinks. Of course, in no way, shape or form does this make him qualified to give phycological advice. But then again, it’s probably more effective than if he were giving actual swing advice.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME…Golf?

So today marks the start of the 2012 NFL season – are you excited? Perhaps I should rephrase that: ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?!?!?!? I know I’m excited!

Here in the United States, football (not to be confused with fútbol) is all the rage. It’s quite physical, requires extreme athletic ability and fits perfectly into neat little 3-hour programming blocks for TV networks.

What’s more, legions of football fans (myself included) also partake in fantasy football – a betting game involving pretend teams of real NFL players – so for many, there’s double the reason to get lost in this pigskin-mania that sweeps the nation every autumn.

That being said, every Sunday from September through January, millions of Americans plop down in front of the big screen – snacks and beers in hand – to watch the football games. That’s games with an ‘s’ – not just one game, but typically several games throughout the day.

In fact, many people get so lost in gridiron-gaga, that time typically dedicated to “other things” gets diverted to watching football. One of these “other things” of course, is golf. Last year, Stinky Golfer Chris explained how the start of the NFL season marks the end of his golfing season.

And this is where I break from the normal football fan/golfer. Remember when I said I was excited the football season was starting? Well I am. But not because football is on every Sunday. You see, the reality is I don’t really watch football!

Now don’t get me wrong – I like football, but these days I don’t sit in front of the TV all day going from game-to-game whenever a commercial comes on. I may watch 10 minutes here or 5 minutes there – but that’s it.

Yep, I won the Super Bowl in my fantasy league last year and never even watched one entire game! But what’s even cooler is how empty the golf course is on Sunday afternoons here in the Fall. I can make a 1PM tee-time and zip right through 9 holes on a course where it would normally take two and a half hours to play during non-football season!

And autumn in New England is the best time to play golf to boot! You have perfect weather and an empty course – how much better can it get? So to all you football fans who are also golfers – please, please, please keep packing on the pounds in front of the tube all Sunday while I’m out enjoying a perfect day on the links – I wouldn’t want the course to start getting crowded again!

OK, I should admit that I do check my fantasy football app on every tee-box. Hey after all, I’m still an American.

So You Stink At Golf…Big F’ing Deal.

August 29, 2012 | By Greg D'Andrea | 2 Comments

Do I look concerned about not breaking 100?
Do I look concerned about not breaking 100?

How many times have you heard someone say the following: “I’m not good enough to play that golf course.” Worse, how many times have you said something to that effect yourself? Let me help set the record straight:

Not being “good enough” to play a certain golf course is the biggest bunch of BS ever!

Every time I hear the phrase “I’m not good enough to play there,” I throw up in my mouth a little bit. Come on – playing a nice course has absolutely nothing to do with how good you are.

The reality of the situation is it doesn’t matter how good you are. What matters is how good your golf etiquette is. So you stink at golf…BIG F’ING DEAL! If you love the game and know how to keep up with the group ahead of you, then that’s all that matters! You’re not going to get kicked off a course for not breaking 100.

“But I’ll embarrass myself and shoot around 120!” WTF? You shoot 102 every time out at your local course – that’s freaking 30 strokes over par! Are we really going to split hairs over adding another 15 strokes to your already wretched golf game?

REALITY CHECK! If you’re embarrassed about your golf game you have three choices:

  1. Quit Now.
  2. Get Better.
  3. Screw getting better and just go out and have fun.

Ah, but some people can’t have fun unless they get better. Though as I mentioned in a post before, getting “better” is a relative term. Do you think you can just take lessons and become a scratch golfer (see #1 above)?

Look, you stink and you need to come to grips with it. Let’s call it “I stink at golf therapy” and everyone not on a professional tour needs to swallow this pill. I took this medicine years ago and have become much happier today because of it.

I average 93 for 18-holes – that’s 21 strokes over par on average. Guess what? I stink. Sure, I’m better than the guy who averages 102, but does it really matter at this point? We both stink. And that’s OK!

I say go out and play that $100+ golf course an hour away! It’s like going to an upscale restaurant a couple of times a year – you’re not going to plunk-down that kind of cash every week, but once or twice a year – why not? Take the day off of work; Clean the clubs; Wear that nice golf shirt the kids got you for your birthday; and get out there and enjoy yourself.

So you stink at golf…So what? For the love of God – Golf is a game, you should have fun playing it!
