Golf and Your Sex Life

July 18, 2012 | By Greg D'Andrea | 1 Comment

Golf is one of those hobbies that can make or break your sex life. How? Well, for one, golf can put you in a bad mood. Have a bad day out on the links and you can bring that stress home with you. And studies have shown stress can inhibit your libido. If you’re an average hack like most, you can probably string-together several poor rounds in a row – potentially leading to a lengthy drought in the love-making department. Maybe you’re going through a bit of a sexual-drought right now. Ever consider it might be your wretched golf game?

Well, you can give up golf. Or it can be easily remedied by following the ethos of this blog: Golf is a game, you should have fun playing it (e.g. don’t take golf too seriously and you’ll have more fun…and possibly more sex)!

But playing poorly isn’t the only link between golf and sex. Interestingly, if you’re being overwhelmed with sexual thoughts and desires, golf might be just the prescription you need! Number 5 on this list of 8 tips to stop thinking about sex is to take up an outdoor activity or hobby.

Obviously, the idea being that getting out on the links will distract you from sexual thoughts. Now that article doesn’t specifically name golf as the hobby you should take up, but considering what we’ve learned in this post, it would probably be the most effective at getting sex out of your head (perhaps forever if you live up to the playing standards of the average golfer).

Hmmmm – now that I’m realizing there are all these links between sex and golf, it’s starting to creep me out a bit. In any given foursome, there might be the sex-deprived anger management guy or the obsessive sexual-thought disorder guy or possibly both! If I stop to order something from the MOFOBETE, I could have a riot on my hands!

Yeah, it’s probably best if you just have fun out there on the course.

Are You Golfing on Independence Day?

July 4, 2012 | By Greg D'Andrea | Leave a Comment

I can tell you that on the inaugural Independence Day, the first two US presidents were NOT out on the golf course together. But they should have been.

On July 4, 1776, George Washington was in lower Manhattan. Here he would ponder how to fend-off an unavoidable British invasion of New York City.

Meanwhile, John Adams was in Philadelphia. He recently helped Mr. Jefferson put the finishing touches on the Declaration of Independence. And subsequently boasted in a letter to his wife that July 2nd would be forever marked with great celebrations.

They were both soon to be disappointed. New York inevitably fell to the British later that summer. And July 4th (not the 2nd) was inevitably recognized as America’s Independence Day.

Yet in hindsight, a round of golf would have a been a nice distraction for Washington and Adams on July 4, 1776. They could have met halfway on a farm in New Jersey and made their way through a make-shift course while consuming a few pints of ale.

But, responsibilities would have gotten in the way. Washington, after all, had an army to lead. And Adams was busy trying to form a wartime government.

Sound familiar? I mean, we don’t all have armies to lead or governments to form. But we do have cookouts and family gatherings that get in the way of golf. Perhaps one of the biggest ironies of having a day off to celebrate independence is: You don’t have much independence to choose how you are going to do your celebrating!

With that said, I’d like to know if you are going to play a round of golf today? Much like Washington and Adams, many (including myself) will sadly not be on the links. How about you?

POLL: How Much Were Your Golf Clubs?

June 20, 2012 | By Greg D'Andrea | 5 Comments

What did you spend on your golf clubs? (photo by Greg D'Andrea)

I’m about due for a new set of golf clubs and I’ve gotta tell you, it’s kinda stressing me out. Now I’m not talking about drivers and wedges here. I talking specifically about my irons.

My current set (Mizuno MX-23) ran me about $700 back in 2005. But here’s the problem: While I love the way my Mizuno’s look and feel, I’m not really sure my game has improved any over my previous set (a $300 set of Spalding Executives circa 1998).

So should I spend more than $700 this time in an effort to improve my game? Or should I spend less and save my hard-earned money for more “realistic” goals? Maybe I should spend the same amount and just take some lessons?

I probably should have purchased new irons by now, but this trepidation over how much I should spend has really held me back. Perhaps I should do what Stinky Golfer Chris did and have a set custom fit for me. Of course, I’m not sure Chris’ game has improved that drastically either.

Since my last purchase seven years ago, my life has changed – I have a family now and I don’t get out on the course as much as I used to. On the other hand, I don’t want to do myself (or my game) a disservice by getting crappy clubs.

So I’m hoping you can help. My scores show that I’m pretty much an average hack golfer. And since the Golf Stinks blog caters to average golfers, I should just ask how much you spent on your current set of irons.

Now if you got them for free, obviously that doesn’t count. But everyone else feel free to take the poll below – it might just help me justify what I should spend. Oh – and please be honest – if everyone puts “More than $1,200” I’ll know you’re all liars!

Screaming on the Golf Course

June 6, 2012 | By Greg D'Andrea | Leave a Comment

Are you a fairway screamer?
Are you a golf course screamer?

I got an email from an old college buddy recently, let’s call him Stinky Golfer Smith, to say he was going to be in my area and wanted to drop by.

Anyway, thinking of Smith always reminds me of Monica Seles (you know – the tennis player) because she always used to put audible emotion into her swing whenever she hit the ball.

Well, Smith was no different when golfing – see video below. (CAUTION: Check your speaker volume first)!

For a game in which players are supposed to remain relatively quiet, it sure can get noisy out there. For example, one of the co-founder here at GolfStinks (Stinky Golfer Tom) really let’s you know it when an errant shot is headed your way.

Tom’s blood-curdling “FORE!” can be heard throughout the course – seriously, people on every hole are ducking for cover. And if you’re on the tee with him, you better cover your ears or risk damaging your ear drum.

But yelling “fore” is not only acceptable, it’s considered poor course etiquette if you don’t. I suppose missing a 2-foot putt because you were distracted by someone yelling fore is better than missing the next few rounds after taking one off the noggin.

But what about other yelling and screaming on the course? Racking your brain to think of any? How about this:

“Hey, Bob! What’s the distance from there!?”

“Mary! What club did you use!?”

“Wow, Jim! You really hit the [bleep] out of that one!”

“Don’t worry, Jane! I saw where it landed!”

We scream these and other similar phases across the fairways at each other all the time (and in case you’re wondering, this is indeed poor etiquette – and, asking what club your playing partner used is even illegal).

If I blow a 2-foot putt because some fool is in the fairway behind me screaming to his foursome that he found his first drive, I’d be kinda upset. Come to think of it, the video above is a blatant display of poor etiquette. Funny? Yes. Poor etiquette? Absolutely.

So consider this post the next time you have the urge to scream across the fairway. And try not to be Monica Seles when teeing off…except maybe when it’s the last hole and money is on the line, because it seems to be rather effective (I didn’t forget, Smith – I still owe you a beer).

A Memorial Day Tribute From Golfstinks

Remember on Memorial Day (photo by lcm1863 / CC BY 2.0

Contrary to popular belief, today is not National BBQ Day or National Cookout Day.  No, that’s June 23rd this year.  Rather, it’s Memorial Day.  And although me and the guys here at golfstinks do intend to spend the day on the links before parking ourselves in front of our grills, we have certainly not forgotten why we’re able to do so.

Many times, lost in the three-day weekend is the reason you had the opportunity to hit the links on a Monday morning rather than stare at the walls buried inside your cubicle farm.  Too often we don’t stop to take the time to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

But this day is for them.  And in celebration of the brave men and women in all branches of the military, we’re going to take a look back at some of the past posts in which we’ve made mention of our brave brothers and sisters.  Be it Memorial Day, Veterans Day or just because, we at golfstinks believe that everyday should be a day to remember and give thanks to the people who who help to make our lives what they are.

Back in November of 2009, in a post titled Who Are Your Golf Heroes?, Stinky Golfer Greg introduced us to his Uncle Frank – a veteran of World War II and Greg’s personal golf hero.

In March of 2010, we came across the charity Bunkers In Baghdad.  This great organization sends golf equipment to our active duty troops in the desert as well as donates equipment to our troops recovering with the Wounded Warriors Program.

For Memorial Day 2010, Stinky Golfer Pete reflected on a memorable round he played with his buddies father – a veteran of the Vietnam War.  While hearing both stories he enjoyed, as well as others he may have wished he hadn’t heard, Pete was also given some words to live by…

We tend to poke a little fun at some of the over-the-top golf gadgets on the market today.  But in August of 2010 Stinky Golfer Greg found that Wounded Warrior Golf was using a 3-D swing system to help wounded veterans recover their range of motion.  Golf technology is helping our injured veterans recover?  We can’t think of a better use.

Fast forward to Veterans Day 2011 when I got to experience first-hand the appreciation our troops and veterans, as well as their families and friends, have for the support shown to them by the people they are fighting for.  It feels good to know you’re helping, but it feels better when you can truly understand the appreciation that goes along with it.

This Memorial Day, all we ask is that when you’re about to tee off on the first hole, take a bite of a foot-long dog hot off the grill or even just sleep in for a change…take a few minutes to remember why you’re able to do all of these things.  Keep in mind the people who will never be able to experience things like this again.  And say a prayer for those who are still away from their families and friends on a day when many of us civilians are gathering with ours.  Because if it weren’t for the bravery of a few, life would be different for all.

Swing ’til you’re happy!
