Hung Up On Teeter Hang Ups

Stinky Golfer Pete on his Teeter

As the quest for improving our golf game continues, it has led many of us down some strange paths. Almost as if we are forgetting to take the blinders off and look at the big picture. Many hacks have become obsessed with what I refer to as micro segments of the golf game. It’s like we focus on such minute things we think are a problem with our game that we end up getting something like that plastic stick that goes from our wrist to our club and problem solved.  I’d hate to be the bearer of bad news but…well, you know the rest.

So, about that big picture. It’s quite simple, golf requires the use of our whole body. Back, arms, legs, core and even our head (I know, hard to believe). Why not do something that benefits our entire body and in turn helps our entire golf game? That said,  a few weeks ago the good folks over at Teeter Hang Ups set us up with one of their inversion tables. Upon receiving it I couldn’t help but notice its solid build and high quality. Good thing considering I was soon to be suspended upside down.

Luckily, I have not been plagued with chronic back pain. The occasional soreness, tightness or mild temporary pain is pretty much the extent of it for me. However, the Teeter inversion table is not just for those with back pain. In fact, there were studies done (which you can find on their website here) that show the advantages of using a Teeter Hang Ups for overall health. Considering we are golf oriented, improving our overall health can directly help better our game.

When it comes to golf, range of motion is a big factor. Technically, the further back we can load up the more power we generate and so on. That means flexibility. After using the Teeter inversion table for a few weeks there was undoubtedly an improvement in my flexibility and range of motion. Knowing I was getting the Teeter inversion table I hit up a local driving range for a little before and after comparison. Don’t get me wrong I would have preferred to hit the links but in the Northeast the cold weather arrives way before winter’s official first day. Thank goodness for heated driving ranges.

The major differences for me was the increase in flexibility and lack of soreness the next day. Before getting the table, I felt it took me almost a quarter of the bucket to feel “warmed up” whereas after I was good to go after the first few. Another thing I noticed were more consistent fluid swings obviously due to the stretching. Speaking of stretching, it has also helped in everyday life as well. Pretty cool that only after a few short weeks the improvements were noticeable.

If you’re in the market to improve your game and general wellbeing I would highly recommend considering purchasing a Teeter Hang Ups. Not trying to sound like a commercial but a few minutes a day is all it takes. Now, get out there and feel better!

Golf Has The Best Sayings

If we take a look back into the history of sports,  we will undoubtedly find quite the collection of memorable quotes, phrases and sayings. Whether motivational, inspirational, funny whatever, these groups of words have withstood the test of time and are often repeated to this day. I’m willing to bet that 95% of all bosses, managers, team leaders or coaches have used at least one at some point.

That said, I want to refer back to the title because of all the sports, golf has the best sayings. I mean, we can take some of the greatest sayings in sports like Wayne Gretzky’s “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.”  Don’t get me wrong, it’s great and all but for some reason it just doesn’t hit home. It’s like you hear it, it sinks in and then a few moments later it’s forgotten.

In general, the goal of these quotes is to give us something to live by. The problem is that most of them came from famous superstars. People that the average joe don’t necessarily relate to. Now, if we shift our attention over to something us hacks understand, you will see my point.

For example, the saying “A bad day of golf is better than a good day at work.” Ah ha! You see where I’m going. It doesn’t say a bad day of baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, lacrosse or friggin’ cricket is better than a good day of work, does it? No, it’s golf. Now, who do you think said that? By process of elimination, I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say a non professional athlete of the working class. In other words…one of us. Thank you very much!

P.S. This was in no way a shot at Mr. Gretzky. He’s an incredible golfer and a pretty big advocate for the game. Not too shabby at hockey either I heard…

5 Indicators That You May Be A Golf Addict

November 29, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

golf brainWe all know of a golf fanatic or two. In fact, we might even be one. It’s perfectly normal to be passionate about golf. It’s a great game and for many becomes a life long hobby. As with everything, we know moderation is the key to a healthy balanced life…that includes golf.

Unfortunately, there are always those that take it too far. You know who I’m talking about. If you don’t know who I’m referring to that person might be you. So, I’ve put a few signs together that could help to see if you or someone you know is a golf addict. Here we go…

  • You can’t help but to sharpen all your pencils to roughly the length of your index finger.
  • You’ve considered golfing in a hurricane because “Man, that tailwind would add an easy 50 yards to my drive!”
  • You skipped out on family functions to get a round in and said you had to work.
  • Your work attire is golf attire and you’ve even wore golf shoes to the office.
  • You have a bumper sticker on your car that says “I’d rather be driving a (insert favorite driver brand)”.

Not to worry, you’re not alone. With a little counseling and support from loved ones we can have you back to the normal hack you once were. I know, I know; “How did I get to this point?” right? One day at a time. You’ll be ok.

Golf, Stress & A Navy Seal

November 21, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

navy golfThere are countless people in this country that deal with stressful situations on a daily basis. Whether it’s work related (which probably makes up the majority), your significant other, family issues, your favorite team sucks whatever the case may be. It seems the more we try to avoid bringing stress into our lives the more it rears it’s ugly head. As a defense mechanism, we naturally react to stress in different ways to vent. Some better than others.

This brings up an interesting story. Robert O’Neill, the former U.S. Navy Seal known as the man who shot Osama Bin Laden, has had to make the transition from a highly trained spec-ops warfighter back to a normal civilian. Part of his transition included regular meetings with shrinks and at their suggestion take up activities to help with any PTSD. These activities included fishing and you guessed it – golf.

Now, I don’t know about you but when an ex-Seal says golf is more stressful than combat, you have to wonder. According to O’Neill, put a suppressed assault rifle in his hands, it’s all good, another day at the office. Give him a golf club and he loses his s***. In some odd way I can almost understand his point. Fighting has become second nature and he is in his “comfort zone”, as weird as that may sound.

Considering golf is a precision sport, the idea of using it to relax could backfire when you have a perfectionist trying to play for the first time. Here’s a man that has been to some of the most hostile war zones in the world and has successfully completed missions so dangerous that if he was caught the government would probably deny even knowing who this guy was. And golf is stressful?

Mr. O’Neill, I can’t thank you enough for your service and am glad you are on our side. If you’re ever in the Northeast and want to hack up a local track, it would be an honor.

Life After Golf?

November 5, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

Recently, I was speaking with someone that said they quit golfing. I’m thinking “How do you quit golf?” The short answer, you don’t. Basically, golf has a beginning, an extremely long middle and no end. It’s a life long affair with some hiatus’ thrown into the mix.

There’s a 99% chance that the person I spoke with will find themselves back on the course. After discussing his “quitting”, the reasoning was based on frustration of poor play which is why I’m confident he will be playing again soon. Not to compare golf to drugs but, you see the point. Once you get a taste, it’s a wrap!

People take up golf for various reasons. Whether it’s something you picked up as a kid because our father, uncle, mother, older sibling or whoever introduced it to us or you have retired and need to do something. Whatever it may be, once we start it’s with us for the rest of our life. That’s a good thing!

What I’m trying to say here is there is no life after golf. Golf is a part of our lives. For many of us hacks out there, we shared a lot of good memories on the course and that alone will keep us coming back, not to mention the one great shot we keep replaying in our minds in an effort to hopefully do again and again. Not for nothing what would we do if we quit golf? I know, take up golf!
