Paralysis Of Analysis

Golf Driving Range
Are we all just wasting our time on the driving range? (photo by Max Nathan via Flickr)

By definition this means over-analyzing or over-thinking a situation so that a decision or action is never taken, in effect paralyzing the outcome. In an effort to seek the perfect answer or solution to something, we fear making any decision that could lead to failure. In a recent Golf Channel story, they discussed Tiger Woods’ mission to perfect his swing as the reason of his downfall.

After reading the article, they made a good case as to why his recent less-than-spectacular performance was due to his search for swing perfection. Now, we normally do not delve into the realm of giving swing advice nor any other tips or lessons on how to be a better golfer. However, there are some exceptions and here is one of them…

So you want to be a better golfer? Join the club. I’m certain 99% of the 26 million or so non-professional golfers in the U.S. feel the same way. I know I do. The important thing to take away from this is to “play our game”.  Obviously we see what Mr. Woods is going through and he does this everyday. A key factor to progress is learning from mistakes, whether they’re ours or someone else’s.

As a hack, the priority list of every round we play is a bit different than a pro’s. Our number one is to have fun compared to their number one which is to win and make money. That said, todays lesson is quite basic – forget about perfecting our swing and just swing the friggin’ club.

Sports Gambling Season…Wanna Bet?

February 3, 2015 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

Does sports gambling taper-off after football season?
Does sports gambling taper-off after football season?

As the Patriots walk away with their 4th Super Bowl Championship and the NFL wraps up another season, this also means the end of “sports gambling season” is drawing near. Sports gambling season? Yep, you heard right. With college and pro football out of the way, we have March Madness in a few weeks and then the NBA finals. After that, sports gambling season will go into hibernation until next September, more or less.

Now, this brings up a good point. Would golf see more gambling activity if it was a cold weather sport? As stupid as that sounds (obviously golf sucks in the cold weather) why do other warm weather sports like baseball see less action than football or basketball? I’m guessing it could be anything from the scoring system to the rules…who knows? It’s definitely not because the players are such morally upstanding athletes. I take that back, I shouldn’t let a few rotten apples spoil the bunch.

Maybe it’s just me but I see golf as an excellent sport to bet on. Hold on, let me set the record straight. I’m not telling anyone to gamble, this is just my opinion. That said, golf is ideal because it’s only one person, the scoring is double-digits and cheating is almost non-existent…as far as we know. And with websites like betfair, golf betting is also easily accessible (check out some of their unique videos featuring a ping pong-playing octopus here).

Again, I’m not saying to get on the phone with some guy named Vinny “the Ox” and bet the farm. I just find it rather odd that the cooler months seem to have more betting involved. During the warmer months, we’re too busy hacking up the local tracks that we forget about betting on sports…or maybe we’re still trying to pay off Mr. Ox before we need new knee caps.

The World of Golf Collectibles

Non-pro-tour golf collectibles (like Caddyshack memorabilia) exist and are available via companies like Steiner Sports

I’m pretty sure the words golf and memorabilia are something primarily spoken by a few super dedicated golf collectors and pro tour fanatics. As far back as I remember, I can’t recall at any point going out of my way to get an Arnold Palmer rookie card. In all due respect, I’m pretty sure it didn’t exist but, you get the point. I wonder what a Tiger rookie goes for these days?

But up until recently, I didn’t even consider golf memorabilia – I mean, I don’t really consider myself a lover of the pro tours. But hanging a photo of Ty Webb and Al Czervik (autographed by Chevy Chase no less) in my den? I’d be all over it! Golf collectibles such as this really do exist (see HERE). And now I can proudly display my love for golf, without visitors thinking I’m some sort of golf snob!

And these are great gift ideas too. Especially if you have trouble getting something for the golf enthusiast in your home…problem solved! Actually, now that I’m thinking about it, maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea if golf were to have trading cards? What’s that? They actually do?

Indeed – turns out that Arnold Palmer rookie card is going for just under $3,400 on eBay.  And the Tiger one? Oh, that one is only going for like 35 thousand dollars. WTF??? Talk about golf snobs! I think I’ll stick with the Caddyshack memorabilia.

4 Things Golf Hacks Take For Granted

Would it hurt to change your golf grips every once in a while? (photo by Dan Perry / CC BY 2.0)

A new year brings new beginnings, fresh starts, gym memberships and resolutions we make a half-ass attempt at. Don’t get me wrong, there are those green smoothie drinking, 10 mile running, MMA, Crossfit, already completed an extreme warrior tough-guy gladiator mud dash race before I hit my snooze button overachievers that accomplish what they set out to do. And then there’s the other 99.9% of the population – us. For the record though, I really admire their focus and determination…and please don’t kick my ass.

Seriously, as a hack I find it best to set any golf related resolutions and goals within reach. This year my resolution is to pay attention to the stuff taken for granted. Golf is obviously not our job so we tend to let minor details slip, which could actually benefit our game. So, compiled below is a list of a few things most of us take for granted.

  1.  Golf Spikes – When was the last time you paid attention to the traction on your shoes? We don’t really notice the loss of our footing because it happens gradually over a period of time. In fact, there’s a ton of golfers that get new spikes only because they’re on a new pair of shoes. Now, if you’re going the spike-less route they should be checked too. If they grip like a pair of rented bowling shoes, it’s time to change. You would be surprised how securing our base can boost our confidence a bit.
  2. Grips – Here’s another one that loses effectiveness over time. You know that feeling of gripping your brand new club? Man, it’s like we can smash the dimples off that ball. And then seven years later we’re using super tacky wide receiver gloves because our grips look more like electrical tape than…well, grips. Stop being cheap and change them for Pete’s sake!
  3. Clean Clubs – This is a good one. Have you ever taken a good look at some golfer’s clubs? There is so much crud stuck in the grooves that the face is completely flush. Those grooves the manufacturer milled into the club head are there for a reason. I’m not saying a clean club will make us incredible golfers, but having a little bite benefits the cause. Get in those crevices with a tee or something for once. And finally…
  4. Mental Preparedness – As I had mentioned before, golf doesn’t pay our bills. Therefore, we treat it that way. Our mental preparation happens when we are “warming up” on the first tee box right before teeing-off. By the way, that “stretch” we do where we place the club behind our neck and across our shoulders holding each end as we rotate our upper body left and right a couple times does absolutely jack s***! What 1950’s gym class calisthenics instructional video did that come from? Anyway, if we were to apply 10% of the effort a pro does into mental preparation who knows,  maybe our game would improve by 10%…

There you have it. A little something to think about as we (if you live in the northern part of the country) wait patiently for golf season to start.

Golf gets better with age
How many people over 60 can still play other sports? (photo by Greg D’Andrea)

Many of us have participated in different types sports on every level. Most of us in a recreational manner but some have been blessed with the opportunity to showcase their skills in “the show”. For those not familiar, “the show” refers to the big leagues – NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL…you get the picture. Personally, I’ve played on competitive levels. Granted, not in “the show” but had the chance to compete against some that did and let me tell you, they deserved to be there.

It’s easy for us to watch a game on the television and say this guys sucks or that guy is a bum. What we might be forgetting is that these athletes are the best of the best. Against their peers it might now be so evident but trust me, they got game! However, as good as they may be their days are numbered. Most pros call it quits in their 30’s, a handful make it to 40 or so and that’s it the gloves are hung up.

Coming back to real life and us average joes, the age of the recreational player probably extends another 10-15 years maybe 20 but there  is an exception. Golf. I really can’t think of any other sport or activity that can be a part of our entire life, health permitting. Don’t get me wrong, I know there are senior leagues that exist but when was the last time you saw a 65 year old whip a 25 year old’s ass other than on a golf course? Exactly. Golf is one of the few things we can enjoy throughout our life.

Not only can we enjoy the game, we can actually get better as we age. For example, a gentleman in his 60’s I know, who we can call Phil, is putting up some the best scores he’s ever had. Why? Wisdom through experience. He’s more concerned about keeping it in play then smashing the s*** out of the ball. Less is more as he likes to put it. Hitting it 175 or 200 yards down the middle is way more beneficial than spraying a bomb all over creation. I would insert a grasshopper quote here but unfortunately I don’t have one.

So, if there’s one thing we can take away from this is that as a hack, our better days are ahead.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!! Or just keep it in play…
