Do Great Golfers Make Great Instructors?

January 25, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

Here goes with the age old question. Do great athletes make great coaches? Well, I tend to believe that a majority of the great athletes might have some coaching ability because it’s still fresh in their minds but that’s about it. You see, very few people can excel and become great at one thing never mind two. Same goes for golf…or does it?

If you go to your local track and want to take lessons, who’s the person that gives them? The course pro and there’s a high probability they are incredible golfers too. It’s funny because when I look on the side line of any other professional sport, I’m going to go ahead and guess that most of the coaches couldn’t perform at the level their players do. Nor could they have had done so in their prime.

Here’s something even better, certified golf pro’s battle it out on two fronts. The first being they need to keep their skills honed and scores low and secondly, they go through a few years of certification training to teach plus continue with refresher courses. A lot easier said than done but the proof is definitely in the pudding. How many NFL coaches do you know of can do a sub 5 second 40 yard dash without keeling over?

OK, I got a little carried away, I completely understand the physical requirements of an NFL player are much more demanding than a pro golfer’s. The point is that in order to teach someone how to golf, you’re most likely great at it. And “it” meaning teaching and golf! So, make sure you support your local track and golf pro!

ScoreBand Scores!

January 18, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | 2 Comments

As always, we are on the look out for interesting stuff that is golf related. With that in mind, we want to thank the great bunch of folks over at ScoreBand for hooking us up with their new score keeper watch. So what is this watch I speak of? Well, for starters it won Best Product Concept at the PGA Merchandise Show presented by the United Inventors Association. Not too shabby.

I do have to say that when I received this watch I was impressed with the quality. I’ve had another similar watch that definitely wasn’t up to par (pun intended) with this one. Also, after wearing it all week I can appreciate the light weight.

What about the score keeping? Glad you asked! There is an “Allscore” mode, which lets you keep track of just about any score and it just so happened to come in handy during a recent indoor soccer game. There’s the “Golf” mode which keeps track of your hole and round score and, might I add, was a hell of a lot easier than imagined. Finally, the “Tennis” mode. Although I have yet to use this function in a match, I still played with the buttons in tennis mode and just as expected, it was very easy.

My advice to you is to grab one of these. They make great gifts too! Speaking of gifts, it wouldn’t be right if we reviewed something and didn’t offer a chance to win a free one. So…

Just head on over to our Facebook page and simply “Like” the post on our wall entitled; “Enter to win a FREE ScoreBand!” That’s it – we’ll pick one lucky winner at random!

Hit ’em long…yell FORE!!! Good Luck.

Golf Clubs And Underwear.

January 11, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | 5 Comments

For the first time in a long time I was confronted with the decision of whether or not to let someone borrow my clubs. I’ve had this happen a couple times in the past but I always had an out – I’m a lefty. Never did I ever come across another lefty that wanted to borrow my clubs. Usually, we are a rare breed and know that we just need to have our own set.

I needed some time to think about this. A couple factors that came into play were 1) this guy is not a golfer he just happens to swing left and 2) he was going on a golf trip with his buddies. Hell no! Red flags were going up everywhere. It’s tough enough to find a left handed set that you want without special ordering and paying out the ass for it. Do I really think this guy will care for them? I doubt it.

Unfortunately, I had to nicely turn down the request by telling him my clubs were at the shop being re-gripped. That’s good one, right? I just hope he’s not reading this. How do I explain to someone that (for me at least) letting you borrow my clubs is like letting you borrow my underwear. There’s a personal attachment and if anyone is going to dirty them it’s going to be me. Ok, that might be a little to much info but you get the point.

Maybe I’m a little extreme with my reasoning but I can’t quite let someone else borrow my clubs. Especially if they never played. I mean, I have no problem with letting someone use a club when I’m there but the whole borrowing thing isn’t quite jiving with me.

What do you think? Would you let someone borrow your clubs?

Cold Shafts = Poor Performance

January 4, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | 5 Comments

The winter weather and freezing temps have found their way to the Northeast once again. The days of golfing in shorts and frolicking in the 80 degree sunny weather are mere memories. Sadly, it’s time to finally take the clubs out of my trunk and stow them away to hibernate.

This year I came across some interesting articles and videos concerning proper club storage. If you live in a climate that experiences extreme temperature swings, such as the Northeastern part of the US, it is important to try and not subject your clubs to prolonged exposure in freezing or extremely hot conditions. Granted they are constructed of very durable materials but anything exposed to the elements long enough will break down.

What’s the big deal with keeping clubs in my garage? Well, if you don’t care then there’s nothing wrong but if you would like to avoid the possibility of losing a club head during your next round, I would suggest keeping them somewhere warmer. Unless, of course, your garage is heated. Supposedly the freezing temps can really mess with the glue holding the club head to the hosel.

Your grips can also suffer from drastic temp changes. It may not happen in a season or two but if you’re like me and have a set of clubs for a while (years), your grips can pay the price. Everybody wants their shaft to be smooth, hard and shiny, not their grips. You know what I mean…get your head out of the gutter.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!! Take care of your clubs.

Golf Drinks 101.

December 28, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

Arnold Palmer is not only a great golfer, it’s also the name of a half iced tea half lemonade beverage. John Daly is also the name of a pro golfer and also the name of a beverage (pretty much an an Arnold Palmer with vodka, if you will). I’m pretty sure most people know what an “Arnold Palmer” is and if you didn’t know what a “John Daly” was, you do now.

Do you see a trend emerging in the golf/beverage sector? I do. And I want to be on the leading edge. So, I thought I would take the liberty and create some new beverages named after golfers. Here we go:
  1. Kevin Na – Named after his incredibly slow play, this beverage is 100% molasses in a glasses.
  2. Sergio Garcia – Somebody call the waaaaambulance. This beverage is red wine, chopped fruit, lots of tears – stirred with a middle finger.
  3. Greg Norman – A ridiculously expensive glass of wine. How else can he pay his alimony?
  4. Tiger Woods – 1 part gatorade…wait, he lost that endorsement. Screw it, indulge yourself in whatever you want… just like Tiger. Ba-dum!!!
Thank you, thank you! I’ll be here all week…try the salmon.
Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!
