Indirect Golf Advice From Mom.

November 22, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

dogs are barkingWhen I was younger my mother used to tell me not to skimp on certain stuff especially when it came to my health and my body. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to drop a fortune to do so, just make sure the quality is good. So for example and as weird as it may sound, she said don’t be cheap when it comes to a bed or shoes. These are important in our everyday performance and a lot of times we take it for granted.

It makes sense when you think about it. Sleeping well has a 100% positive effect on our productivity and output levels. Now that we are all rested up the next important thing is our feet, more so our shoes that will take us through the day. In golf especially, a good comfortable pair of shoes can make all the difference. Companies like Footjoy pride themselves on this. Take a look at some golf shoes from the leading brand and while you’re at it, the great range of Footjoy clothing too.

Some of my friends still don’t understand the concept of buying quality proper fitting golf equipment. One of my buddies wears a size 9 shoe but bought a pair of some size 8.5 off brand discount specials because they were $25. He swears they were a deal and at the same time he swears up and down because his feet hurt after a round but blames it on a “bone spur”. The same “bone spur” that only occurs after golfing. Boy, what a coincidence.

The older and wiser I get (or so I think), the more I appreciate the lessons and values my mother instilled. As Thanksgiving approaches and we begin to think about what we are thankful for, I have to say I am thankful that my mother’s advice improved my golf game and she never swung a club nor stepped foot on a course.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!! Thanks Mom!

Where Do You Buy Your Golf Equipment?

Where do you buy your golf equipment?
Where do you buy your golf equipment? (photo by Greg D’Andrea)

I admit, despite writing for a blog, I’m very skeptical of the internet in general.  There is simply so much information out there that you never know what and what not to believe.  Combine that with identity theft, viruses and sites looking to rip you off, then suddenly misinformation is the least of your concerns.  Even things as simple as online shopping can be questionable.  For instance, I saw a pair of shoes I like on a “discount” website for $69.95.  I didn’t purchase them, and I’m glad I didn’t – I found the same pair at a local department store for $39.95!  So that leads me to my question about golf equipment.  Where do you purchase yours?  Golf shop?  Pro shop?  Big box sporting goods store?  Online?

Myself, I’m partial to purchasing my golf-related equipment from a store as opposed to on-line.  I’m the type of person who needs to touch, feel and try things before I purchase them.  So for me, the on-line thing doesn’t work for golf stuff.  I can’t buy a club or putter that I haven’t held in my hand, swung or tried out for a while, no matter the price.  And shoes?  Forget it!  How do you buy shoes online without trying them on first?  I can understand doing your research online (like this nicershoes.com golf shoe review), or even purchasing balls online.  But that’s about it.  Now I know some of you will say that you can go to the store, swing a club, play with the putters or try on the shoes, then just go home and buy the same stuff on-line for less money.  But at that point, is it really less money?  Not if you value your own time.

You can go to a golf shop or pro shop and get a fair amount of personal service.  Someone who will spend time with you, maybe give you some advice and help you decide what’s best for your game.  To a lesser extent, you can get that service at the big box stores such as Dick’s or Sports Authority as well.  Granted you pay a little extra for that, but it’s a service the shops and stores can provide that a website can’t.  So is it worth it to take that time then go home and buy online?

Let’s see…I just spent my time driving to the store, using my gas back and forth, spent who knows how long with the pro or salesman and then have the opportunity to buy what I want right then and there.  But instead, I’m going to go back home, try to find the same driver I just settled on (with the assistance of the guy I was working with) from a site like Amazon or something to save what…10-15%?  But then I have to pay a shipping cost – an increased one at that if I don’t want to wait 5-7 days or longer.  If I asked the guy at the store if he could do anything on the price, I could probably have gotten 10% off right then without having to wait for my shipment to arrive!  And not only that, once it’s being shipped, I get to be involved in the adventure of waiting to see if the package shows up undamaged or if the right product is even sent…trust me, that’s happened to me.

But further, coming from a sales background I find it to be a bit disrespectful to the salesman or pro (who may be working partially on commission) to spend time with him/her while they’re taking the time, doing all they can to help someone who has no intention of purchasing from them.  It’s like if you were a car salesman and you answered every question the customer had, took them for a test drive and gave them all of the information they could possibly need, only for them to go and purchase the car from somewhere else because they were saving $5/month.  You’re taking money out of a hard-working persons pocket and giving it to someone who didn’t earn it.  That person could have been dealing with someone else who intended to make a purchase from them.  But, if you think going through that effort to save a few bucks is worth it, then that’s your choice and that’s fine.

My point is, the internet is great for certain purchases.  But think about it before you purchase something blindly, especially your golf equipment.  Avoiding the hassle of returning something because you didn’t take the time to swing it or try it on could be well worth the additional money you spent to begin with.  And the assistance you receive in person rather than online could prove invaluable when your brand new driver can’t place a ball anywhere near the fairway and your feet are killing you by the 7th hole.

Swing ’til you’re happy!

I Won My Golf Equipment at a Stag Party

It’s funny…people never believe me when I tell them I won my putter at a stag party. Well, that’s not exactly true. “Serious” golfers never believe me when I tell them I won my putter at a stag.

Actually, now that I think about it, I guess that isn’t entirely true either.  I actually won a fairway wood at a stag and traded it to the guy who won the putter. At the time, I wasn’t interested in a fairway wood. But, I needed a new putter, so there you go.

Recently, Stinky Golfer Greg and I attended another stag party and, along with all of the requisite raffle prizes such as bottles of alcohol and tickets to sporting events, was a little golf package – some golf balls, a club cleaner, etc. But it made Greg and I think…when’s the last time we went to a stag and golf wasn’t somehow involved?

The two have become almost synonymous with each other. Golf and stags, stags and golf, it’s like peanut butter & jelly or ham & cheese. You never see one without the other. Whether the stag is a golf trip or involves a round of golf, or the raffle prizes are golf equipment, golf is somehow involved in just about every bachelor or stag party I’ve ever been to.

So what does that say? Is golf popular enough that it’s almost guaranteed there are enough guys among any group of friends that play? Enough to warrant there’s something golf related at any stag? I guess that’s just how popular the sport is among guys. We had golf raffle prizes at my stag. We had them at Greg’s stag. Heck, we had a week-long vacation in New Mexico for Greg’s wedding, and even that included golf.

And what’s wrong with using the golf equipment you won at a stag anyway? A putter is a putter, whether it was free or if I bought it. I needed a putter, but I didn’t really want to spend much money on one. And what’s better than not spending much money on golf equipment? Getting it for free! Well…the cost of the stag and the raffle anyway. But you get the idea. I won a putter and had a good time doing it.

Besides, I had to replace the free putter I got from my brother-in-law when helping him move. Coincidentally, it was also his stag.

The Belated Mother’s Day Golf Gift Guide

May 14, 2012 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

Some cliché Mother's Day golf gifts...
Some cliché Mother’s Day golf gifts…

As you may have read here in the past, my wife is not a golfer.  Neither is my mother.  So my excuse to play golf on Mother’s Day, via an invitation to take them golfing, is non-existent.  But, if my wife were a golfer, buying Mother’s Day gifts for her would certainly be easier.

See, my wife is a bit of a girly girl.  So, along with quality and well-performing golf equipment, it would have to include that cuteness factor as well.  You know what that means?  It means the equipment is likely going to have to include the color pink.

So in search of golf equipment that fits both bills, I give you the Golfstinks Gift Guide to Belated Mother’s Day Golf Gifts.

Well, if she’s a golfer, you’d have to assume she already has golf clubs.  And those can get quite pricey.  So let’s instead look to something in which to carry the clubs.

Being that my wife is a Nike fan, this one would suit her well.  However, I’m sure you can find yourself a pink golf bag from just about any manufacturer.  The key here is the cuteness factor.

We’ve all already seen the pink golf balls, so those are a given.  So instead, lets look to some golf shoes.  What woman wouldn’t want a pair of cute, pink golf shoes?

I mentioned that my wife is a fan of Nike.  But sorry honey, I like these Adidas better.

But lets imagine for a second that you have lots of money.  OK, lets imagine for a second that I have lots of money, because I don’t know the financial status of our readers.  But I sure do know mine…and lets just say it ain’t quite good enough for this:

Well, I’m sure I’m not the only one who is in a financial situation where a purchase such as this isn’t quite realistic.  But still, one could understand how, if your finances would allow, this would be a great purchase for the special golfing mom in your life.  Be it your wife or mother, especially if they live on a golf course, she could be the envy of all her golfing girlfriends.

Now I know it’s a day late – Mother’s Day was yesterday.  But you could always use the old “I bought (blank) for you, but I had to order it so it should be here soon” excuse.  Hey, it’s worked in the past.  Or, you could save yourself the aggravation and just remember sooner for next year…

You Golf With What?

February 10, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

We here at Golfstinks.com are very proud of our glossary. You will see us use the various entries in our posts from time to time. Today happens to be one of those times. I always get a kick out of those people that don’t quite use the right equipment to play and we have a term called tennis shoe crowd which pretty much describes them.

tennis shoe crowd [ ténniss shoo krowd ]

phrase

persons whom play golf so infrequently, they do not sport the usual golf styles or equipment (these people are easily spotted on the course because they are playing with vintage garage sale clubs, wearing a t-shirt or wife-beater, jean shorts and donning tennis shoes).

There’s one particular time that comes to mind when the group in front of us appeared to be perfect examples of the tennis shoe crowd. They had all the tell tale signs; the vintage clubs, the swing-and-a-miss stroke play, the screaming across the fairway “Hey, watch this!” etc…you get the point. Mind you, we were also playing a local par 3 executive course known to be very relaxed.

We were making our way around the course when we came to a back-up around the 8th hole. Here’s our chance to get a close-up on the group in front of us and needless to say, I did not disappoint. Boy were we in for a treat. Never in my life did I see so many non golf equipment items be used for golf.

For starters, no one had a pair of golf shoes on. Not that golf shoes are absolutely necessary but, and I s#@$ you not, one guy had work boots on and his buddy was wearing football cleats. It gets better, Johnny Unitas over there also had an Under Armour receiver glove on and on top of that we over heard him swearing it was better than any golf glove. Hey, whatever floats your boat.

Ok, so you want to explore other options when it comes to golf equipment. Fine. Although, there comes a point where I draw the line especially when it comes to safety. One of the guys in front of us steps up to the tee box and that’s where I noticed the duct tape holding his club head on. Come on, are you kidding me! Old or not, at least have a set of proper clubs. Luckily, no one felt the wrath of the flying club head, which by the way did come off. Ah yes, the tennis shoe crowd.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!! Don’t run with the crowd…
