Golf Clubs And Underwear.

January 11, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | 5 Comments

For the first time in a long time I was confronted with the decision of whether or not to let someone borrow my clubs. I’ve had this happen a couple times in the past but I always had an out – I’m a lefty. Never did I ever come across another lefty that wanted to borrow my clubs. Usually, we are a rare breed and know that we just need to have our own set.

I needed some time to think about this. A couple factors that came into play were 1) this guy is not a golfer he just happens to swing left and 2) he was going on a golf trip with his buddies. Hell no! Red flags were going up everywhere. It’s tough enough to find a left handed set that you want without special ordering and paying out the ass for it. Do I really think this guy will care for them? I doubt it.

Unfortunately, I had to nicely turn down the request by telling him my clubs were at the shop being re-gripped. That’s good one, right? I just hope he’s not reading this. How do I explain to someone that (for me at least) letting you borrow my clubs is like letting you borrow my underwear. There’s a personal attachment and if anyone is going to dirty them it’s going to be me. Ok, that might be a little to much info but you get the point.

Maybe I’m a little extreme with my reasoning but I can’t quite let someone else borrow my clubs. Especially if they never played. I mean, I have no problem with letting someone use a club when I’m there but the whole borrowing thing isn’t quite jiving with me.

What do you think? Would you let someone borrow your clubs?

Where Are My Clubs?!?!

December 14, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

One of the many things that piss me off about golf is when a club goes missing. It seems inevitable that at least once a year either the person I’m riding with or myself will lose or misplace a club. This drives me absolutely nuts because it is usually a wedge that will not be used until I’m near the green on the next hole.

There is a ritual to the whole process. First you search your bag and then your cart buddy’s bag, just in case you put it there. Then for some reason you get up on the balls of your feet and look back at the previous green like you will be able to see the club. Once that proves to not be effective you proceed with the golfer’s walk of shame.

This walk of shame consists of stopping at the foursome behind you and asking if they picked up your club. If they didn’t (chances are they did and now have a new club) you then make the next stop at the previous green and check the surroundings. You keep repeating this process until you find the club, give up searching for it or realize all the time you are wasting.

I think golf club manufacturers should implement a tracking system for their clubs. Maybe some sort of GPS chip in the shaft. This would help prevent golf club theft and shorten the inevitable walk of shame!

Giving Golf A Second Chance

July 16, 2012 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

The old second chance.  Many people deserve it.  Few get it.  But what about golf?  How many people do you think quit the game and leave it behind for good?  I’ll bet it’s a much higher number than the people who quit the game and come back.  But I recently read an article about a man who plans on doing just that.

This particular gentleman gave up the game back in high school.  Now that in itself is kind of strange, being that it seems to be the time when many are being introduced to the game.  It was for me.  I didn’t start playing in high school, but I had a part-time job at a local golf course, which is where I first discovered the driving range.  But that’s about as deep into golf as I got until my mid-20’s.

But as we’ve mentioned before, sometimes life gets in the way of golf.  It does for most of us.  There’s always something to do that keeps us away from this great game.  And once we get pulled away from the course for a significant amount of time, many of us never go back.  But thankfully, some of us do.  Our writer realized after several failed home improvement projects, that he needed something else to do with his free time.  So, looking for something more social, enter…or…re-enter golf.

So now, he’s faced with some of the the decisions with which many of us were faced when we first took up the game – taking lessons and purchasing clubs.  So if I could inject a bit of my own advice, I would like to say just a couple of things.

1.  Enjoy the game for what it is – a game.  If you take your game or your lessons too seriously, you’ll be missing out on some of the fun.

2.  Use the time on the course for something more than just playing golf.  Make a day of it with your buddies.  Relax, talk, hang out, have a couple beers…make it a good social experience with your friends.

3.  Understand that you will never be a pro.  And if you’re taking up the game later in life, understand that you will likely never even approach the point you think you will reach.  If you hit more bad shots than good…who gives a crap?!  Is it your job?  Are you blowing a million dollar purse?  Are you losing your chance at making the PGA Tour?  No!  You’re just out there having a good time.  Continue to do that.

4.  As for your clubs, before you go out and dump an obscene amount of money into a driver and a set of irons, make sure you’re going to stick with the game first.  I bought a cheap set of clubs to start with and used them for a good twelve years before I got custom-fitted for a set.  And though they feel like they’re helping, my scores certainly don’t reflect it.

Point is, I’m glad to see someone returning to the game.  But I’d be happier if they were to stick with it.  And a few simple ideas with which to approach the game can make the experience all the better.

Swing ’til you’re happy!

POLL: How Much Were Your Golf Clubs?

June 20, 2012 | By Greg D'Andrea | 5 Comments

I’m about due for a new set of golf clubs and I’ve gotta tell you, it’s kinda stressing me out. Now I’m not talking about drivers and wedges here. I talking specifically about my irons.

My current set (Mizuno MX-23) ran me about $700 back in 2005. But here’s the problem: While I love the way my Mizuno’s look and feel, I’m not really sure my game has improved any over my previous set (a $300 set of Spalding Executives circa 1998).

So should I spend more than $700 this time in an effort to improve my game? Or should I spend less and save my hard-earned money for more “realistic” goals? Maybe I should spend the same amount and just take some lessons?

I probably should have purchased new irons by now, but this trepidation over how much I should spend has really held me back. Perhaps I should do what Stinky Golfer Chris did and have a set custom fit for me. Of course, I’m not sure Chris’ game has improved that drastically either.

Since my last purchase seven years ago, my life has changed – I have a family now and I don’t get out on the course as much as I used to. On the other hand, I don’t want to do myself (or my game) a disservice by getting crappy clubs.

So I’m hoping you can help. My scores show that I’m pretty much an average hack golfer. And since the Golf Stinks blog caters to average golfers, I should just ask how much you spent on your current set of irons.

Now if you got them for free, obviously that doesn’t count. But everyone else feel free to take the poll below – it might just help me justify what I should spend. Oh – and please be honest – if everyone puts “More than $1,200” I’ll know you’re all liars!

Golf Clubs?! I Got Your Golf Clubs Right Here…Merry Christmas!

December 23, 2011 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

A uniform set of golf clubs can make all the difference

In my post a couple weeks ago, I broke some balls about getting fitted for clubs. It was an attempt at being funny about shooting poorly and blaming it on my golf clubs. I know, I know…I won’t quit my day job. Comedy’s not my schtick. All jokes aside though, having a set of clubs that you are comfortable with definitely benefits your game. The only problem was that I had to figure it out the hard way.

Growing up with non-golfers, my only exposure to the game consisted of maybe catching Watson, Norman, Strange or Stewart on TV for a hole or two on Sunday afternoon. Oh, wait…I can’t forget my mother’s cousin, Vincenzo from Jersey, who traveled around with a nine iron in the trunk of his Lincoln Continental. Never quite understood that…nor do I want to. Nevertheless, that little taste of golf was enough to spark a curiosity. The problem was, how do I get started in this game?

Enter Stinky Golfer Greg. He pretty much gave me my first set of clubs. You see, if I asked for a set of clubs for Christmas…well…read the title. Basically, I was on my own. Fast forward 12 years or so and I’m glad it worked out this way. You don’t want someone who has never played golf to buy you clubs. Especially me, I’m a lefty. And Greg just happened to have a left-handed friend who bought a new set a few years earlier, but he wasn’t using them. That made all the difference for me. Instead of a mix-match set of garage sale clubs, I had a complete set of cavity backs.

Now, in the beginning, your clubs might not make a difference, but as your game develops they will. I’m not saying you have to spend a fortune on clubs, but if you are going to play on a regular basis, I would consider investing in a set and not necessarily settling for a set. Hey, it’s the holiday season. Treat yourself or a loved one to the fine game of golf.

Hit’em long…yell Fore!!! Happy Holidays!
