Who’s Up For A Golf Brawl?

June 17, 2013 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

Ever get into a rumble on the golf course?
Do fights on the golf course really happen?

As they say, there’s no such thing as bad press.  And last weeks bench-clearing brawl between the L.A. Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks was proof positive.  Now baseball brawls are not uncommon, but they happen infrequently enough that it’s a big deal when they do.  It’s not like a hockey fight where they happen so often that it’s just become part of the game.  No one outside of hockey fans cares about a hockey fight anymore.  But a bench-clearer in baseball?  It’s all over ESPN, Sportscenter, sports highlight shows and, with this particular one, even my local news the next morning!  Imagine that type of coverage for a regular golf tournament?

Come on now…admit it.  Deep down, I know most of us golf fans have a little voice telling us how much we’d like to see Tiger and Sergio come to blows right on one of the tees, mid-tourney.  I know some of you probably just gasped.  “How could he say something like that?”  But think about it from the stand-point of adding attention to the game.  Something like that would add so much more coverage to the sport, which in turn will lead to more viewers and more fans.  people who are not even golf fans are going to be curious about that.  Hell, they may even tune into the tournament just to see if something else erupts!

I used Tiger and Sergio as examples.  But in reality, it could be anyone on the tour really, however it would only help if at least one of the brawlers was a bigger name on the tour.  The younger generation of sports fans has fewer and fewer golf fans within.  Younger fans look to more physical, fast-paced sports.  And with the rising popularity of extreme sports or X-Games type sports in recent years, several sports are either losing fans or gaining them at a slower rate.  But none more than golf.  So something new needs to happen.

More attention needs to be drawn to the sport, and not only during majors.  I’m sure many people will think that a brawl will just be a black eye on the sport, and maybe it will…temporarily.   But like a brawl in any other sport, it will blow over in a pretty short-period of time.  Afterward, it will just be remembered something like “Hey, do you remember that time when (insert golfer here) and (insert other golfer here) went at in during their round?  That was awesome.”  Well, as long as the fight is a good one and doesn’t look something like this:

Because if it does look anything like that, then the sport is about to lose several more potential fans and gain a whole mess of hecklers.  Talk about a black eye…

Tiger Wins! Now How Long Will We Have To Hear About It?

December 5, 2011 | By Chris Chirico | 2 Comments

He won. And for real this time. This time it wasn’t just an over-abundance of highlights showing the third place finisher. This time it wasn’t the media basically handing him the win after the second round. He actually won this time! And I gotta tell ya, I’m not looking forward to hearing about it.

I can picture it already. ESPN will be dropping to their knees (as usual) for Tiger. They can’t wait to just ram it down our throats. As a matter of fact, I think I’m going to just avoid watching ESPN for the next couple of days. Well, outside of Monday Night Football of course.

But seriously, Friday night ESPN was already handing the tournament over to Tiger again! Do they understand there are four rounds to a golf tournament? Watching SportsCenter, I saw one of their sidebar stories state that Tiger had a “Big Lead” after the second round. So I stuck around to see how big it was. Three strokes. Really? Three strokes is considered a “Big Lead” halfway through a tournament?! Well, I guess when Tiger holds the lead it is. Even after the third round, when he lost the lead, it was still all Tiger high-lights. Zach Johnson was just an after thought.

Seriously, come on. When is that stuff gonna stop? People were growing tired of Tiger before his “transgressions.” More were sick of him afterward. And now, even more are just sick and tired of him and the media who continues to just shove him down our throats! I know it’s going to be all over ESPN, so the only saving grace I have is the NFL.

One place where ESPN has not lost any understanding is that the NFL comes before just about everything else. It comes before baseball. It comes before basketball. It comes before college sports (obviously this does not include World Series games or college championships and bowl games). And it certainly comes before golf. Of course, at the time of my writing, SportsCenter has yet to air. But if history is any indicator, Tiger’s victory will not lead after a day an NFL Sunday. But, I can only hope.

However, could you imagine if this victory came outside of football season? I think I would physically choke on the coverage. Add another reason to the list that football is my favorite sport.

Tiger’s Back…And The Media Sure Is Letting Us Know About It!

August 8, 2011 | By Chris Chirico | 8 Comments

So it looks like Tiger finally put an end to that 20 tournament losing streak. He wrapped up the WGC-Bridgestone, like he has so many times before. The longest winless streak of his career is over.

Now maybe he can just get back to his normal routine and just go back to being the same player he always…What? What do you mean he didn’t win? I saw him on every sports news show on TV. I saw Tiger on ESPN constantly! He must have won!

Adam Scott you say? Well I knew he was playing well, but he couldn’t possibly have beaten Tiger. 17 under?! He finished 18 strokes better than Tiger?! Well then, what the hell was I watching?!

Nope, my eyes and ears did not deceive me. Tiger was never really in the hunt after Day 1, but that doesn’t stop the sports media. Rather than focusing on the guy who led the tournament from start to finish, we’re focused on the guy who, after the first day, was never closer than six strokes back. Rather than pay attention to the guys who finished tied for 2nd (each shooting a final round 66), we’re worried about the guy who only broke 70 once in the four rounds.

I get on the PGA’s case for failing to properly promote its players on the tour. But I guess that’s only part of the problem. Just as much of the problem, if not more, is the media. No matter what happens (on the course anyway) the media just can’t get enough of Tiger. It’s been 21 straight winless tournaments, but the media acts like it’s just the opposite. Once again, it’s “Tiger, Tiger, Tiger….oh, and by the way, blah blah blah won.”

Need an example? Friday night, I tuned into Sportscenter. Before they even showed the results of the second round, there was an entire segment on Tiger’s second round struggles, even though he was only three strokes off the day before. A few segments of the show later, we get to the actual highlights of the round. Here, we see a few more strokes and reactions from Tiger before we get to see anyone who is actually in contention. Need further proof? Check out this clip

Still leading off with Tiger. We have to wait through three of Tiger’s putts before we hear about the guy who won. And there’s barely even a mention of either Luke Donald or Rickie Fowler, who finished tied for second. And people wonder why the sport is in the shape it’s in…

So here’s a bit of a plea to the mainstream media – do the sport a favor and start focusing on some of the other great players on the tour. Please realize that, until he shows otherwise, Tiger is no longer the elite player he was. Until he shows otherwise, he is a middle-of-the-pack player. OK, benefit of the doubt due to his accomplishments…he’s still a top-tier player. But he is NOT the Tiger of years past. And until the time comes that he does show otherwise, why not take the time to introduce us to, and promote the other great, young talent on the tour. It can do nothing but help the sport as a whole.

Tiger Is Human Afterall

December 7, 2009 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

2559688403_8b748dc8ce_oSo he cheated. What can you do? Nothing. Is it a crappy thing to do considering you have a wife and kids at home? Sure. Does it happen everyday, all over the world, to regular people like you and I? Absolutely. Does that make it any better? Of course not. But this is the great Tiger Woods. He doesn’t make mistakes out on the course, so how could this happen?

People, people, people….everyone is always so quick to anoint athletes as the second coming. We always forget they can screw up…just like the rest of us. They can do wrong…just like the rest of us. They’re not perfect…just like the rest of us. As a matter of fact, some of them are just downright horrible people…just like some of the rest of us.

According to a CNN statistic, 80-90% of professional athletes cheat on their wives. I don’t know about anyone else, but I am not at all surprised by this statistic. As a matter of fact, I find it a bit hard to believe that it may be as low as 80%. Considering the lives these guys lead, I think many people fail to realize these superstar athletes are just human beings, albeit with superior athletic skills, but human nonetheless. You take a 2o-something year-old kid, sign him to huge contracts and endorsement deals paying him more money in one year than the average person will see in their lives, and that kid begins living a different lifestyle. They are now millionaires. But they are still kids. What do you think is going to happen? These kids are now rich & famous and therefore….more attractive to the opposite sex. They are young and irresponsible and unfortunately, often times are not properly guided. And they get used to it. But what I don’t understand is where these guys lose sight of the consequences of their actions. Especially knowing they are in the spotlight. Why wouldn’t they make smarter choices?

Look at just some of the names in recent memory. Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, Alex Rodriguez, Michael Strahan – these guys have all been exposed as cheaters and made to look like scumbags to the general public. Worse in Kobe Bryant’s case which ended up with allegations of rape! Although we all now know the allegations were false, Kobe’s name will always be tied to that incident. But these are only financial losses and a poor public image. I can name an athlete who I’m sure would be willing to switch places if he could with any of these guys….Steve McNair.

Steve McNair had a 20-year old girl on the side. He lost his life to her in a murder-suicide. Obviously, this is an extreme case, but if it happened to one guy, why not anyone else? But as usual, no one thinks about that ahead of time. I’m sure very few athletes walked away from that news thinking “Man, that could happen to me” then decided to change their ways and actions.

On the flip side, how many of these athletes wives know what’s going on? How many let it continue to go on in order to continue to live the glamorous lives which their husbands career allows? I’m going to guess almost all of them. How could it be anything else? Your husband is a rich, famous athlete who is basically a target for groupies who are looking for sex, money and gifts from him. He is on the road, away from you constantly. What do you think is going on? Are these wives foolish for thinking nothing is happening? Or are they foolish for staying and allowing it to continue? If they let it happen, then other than the ring, what’s the difference between them and the groupie?

So all of this media coverage leaves me with a few questions. Why is this news so much bigger with Tiger Woods than any other cheating athlete? Is it because he is the richest athlete in the world? Is it because he is a golfer and we expect better of him than an NBA player? Are we supposed to feel bad for Elin and their kids? Or was she aware of his goings on and therefore why should we? If that’s the case, should we feel the same anger toward her as we do toward Tiger for putting their kids in this situation?

In my own opinion, I say why should we care? These athletes should be role models for the sport they play….nothing further. None of us turns on Sportscenter to see Tiger Woods sit down for dinner with his family. I don’t care if Kobe Bryant is helping his kids with their homework. If these athletes are great family men, that’s fantastic. If not, then I feel sorry for their loved ones. But either way, that’s not why I’m a fan. I want to see Kobe hit a game-winning jumper as time expires. I want to see Tiger hit a 200-yard shot within inches of the cup. What they do outside of the playing field is not my interest or concern. And unless you are a family member or friend….it shouldn’t be yours either.

The more interest we pay to the sports these guys play, and the less attention toward the tabloid side, we will be able to avoid having to listen to all of this any further. Maybe then these people would be able to deal with this in their own home, where it belongs. For goodness sake, if I wanted to hear gossip and learn who’s cheating on who, I would watch some god-awful show on MTV.
