No Tiger, No Fans?

April 21, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 4 Comments

I think we can all agree that when we are watching the PGA Tour, we are watching the highest level of professional golf we are likely to see.  And that probably goes double for a major.  Face it, the absolute worst player on the tour will still wipe the floor with most any of us.  These guys are simply the best.  So why is it that so many viewers need to have Tiger Woods there, or they’re not interested in watching?  Is a large collective of most of the best players in the world not good enough?

Obviously, I’m referring to The Masters and the fact that Tiger Woods did not play due to surgery (as well as Mickelson not making the cut).  The result?  The lowest ratings for a Masters tournament since 1993.  I wonder why this is?  I get that he is certainly the most popular player in the game, as well as arguably still the best.  But are that many people electing not to tune in if he’s not there?  What about all of the other great golfers who are there?  No love for Bubba?  Fowler?  McIlroy?

This is the reason why the PGA needs to do a better job of hyping more players on the tour.  Once the most hyped player doesn’t participate, despite the fact he hasn’t won the tournament since 2005, too many people no longer care.  So again, these are the greatest players in the world…but no one cares.  When there’s an NFL game in which Tom Brady or Peyton Manning isn’t involved, people still watch, right?  Why is it different for golf and golf tournaments?  Take a look at the numbers.  When you really look at final scores and the total number of strokes, the difference between first and thirtieth is only a matter of about three strokes per round.  Is that really much of a difference form a skill level standpoint?  I’m sorry, but it’s not.  So what exactly do these so-called fans think they’re missing?  It’s as if they are more caught up in the off-the-course Tiger hype than what he should be known for, which is golf.

Speaking of so-called fans, I saw an idiotic comment on another post proving my point.  This person claims they would rather watch Tiger shoot 74 than a “no name guy” shoot 70.  So basically you’re telling me, just because a specific golfer is playing, you would rather watch bad golf than a lesser named player having a better round?  I’m sorry, but that means you are not a fan of the game.

If anything, this should be an eye opener for the PGA.  After all, Tiger is not going to be around forever.  And if this is a sign of things to come when he does decide to hang up his spikes, then the tour is going to be in some real trouble.  They’d better get to work sooner rather than later.

Life Continues To Get In The Way of Golf

April 14, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

I’m in no rush to get any older.  I mean, I’m pushing the big 4-0 now.  I figure it’s likely all downhill from there.  But one thing I am looking forward to….retirement.  It’s not that I don’t like working.  What it really comes down to is, not working will give me more time to golf.  For instance, I had every intention of golfing this past Sunday.  But as usual…life just got in the way.

Picture this….Connecticut….2014.  It’s mid-April and it’s the nicest weekend of the year so far.  You’re faced with a choice – hit the links on a beautiful afternoon or go into work and bust your hump for six hours doing someone else’s job.  Oh, and might I add that you’re doing it unpaid.  Seems obvious, right?  Wrong.  For reasons that I won’t get into, heading into the office to do another persons job, unpaid, was about as close to necessary as can be without actually being necessary.  I could have chosen to play golf, but I would have paid for it over the next several days at work.  So you can see the dilemma.

It seems for me that things are always getting in the way of a nice round of golf.  Between work, sports and activities with the kids, etc.., it’s a guarantee that I’m going to have to bail out on at least a few rounds of golf per season.  So how bad of a sign is it when I have to bail out on the very first one?!  Is this a bad sign for the remainder of the year?  If I can’t even get out of the gate without incident, then what next?

I guess I should be used to it by now.  It happens to the best of us and I’m sure it will continue to do so.  So again…I’m not looking forward to getting older, but I am looking forward to having more time to play golf.  I’m looking forward to the day when there is no going into the office on my day off.  I’m looking forward to the day when there is no longer “work.”  Now that I think about it, I guess in a roundabout way…I am looking forward to getting older.

Is The Masters The Official Kickoff To Golf Season?

Well, it’s that time of year again – it’s Masters Week.  Is it just me or does this week seem to be when everything golf seems to really get moving.  I mean that from the perspective of the pro tours as well as the hacks like me who don’t have the opportunity to play golf year-round.  It’s like we sit around in hibernation all winter long, but once we begin hearing talk of the most popular golf tournament of the year, we all begin to remember where we spend a portion of our weekends all summer long.

On the pro tour, this is the one that really seems to spark the interest of golf fans.  Sure, there has already been several tournaments so far this year, but let’s face it…the Puerto Rico Open doesn’t quite get the juices flowing like The Masters does, am I right?  As I’ve mentioned many times, I don’t particularly care for watching golf on TV, but I’ll make an exception for The Masters.  But honestly, until this week…I pay little to no attention to pro golf.

But as far as us hacks tearing up our local courses, for those of us up north, we haven’t played golf in roughly five months.  So it’s this week that our golf blood really gets flowing.  It’s like we use Masters week as our official kickoff to golf season.  I haven’t been out on a course yet this year, mainly because this past weekend was the first “golfable” weekend we’ve seen yet…well, according to me anyway.  But prior commitments kept me away from the course.  However, this coming weekend will be a different story…

Even further, the golf media obviously knows what happens this week.  Does anyone seriously think that controversial Golf Digest cover was picked for this past week totally at random?  Of course not.  They knew exactly what they were doing.  Don’t get me wrong, for all of the problems I have with the idea of it in general, if they were going to do it, then it certainly was the right time to release that edition.

So in other parts of the country where golf is a year round sport, maybe this isn’t as big a deal to you as it is here.  But in the northeast, this is somewhat the beginning of golf for us.  It’s like opening day in baseball or the first Thursday night NFL game of the year.  Or maybe opening day in fishing season when the anglers are up at the crack of dawn attempting to get the best spot.  Well, it is for me anyway.  See you on the course this weekend!

Is The Golf Industry Finally Learning About Golfers?

March 31, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 2 Comments

Two of the biggest problems with the golf industry in general, I’ve always thought, are simply what is marketed and to whom.  For the most part, everything golf related has been advertised either specifically on The Golf Channel or during golf tournaments – as if every golfer only watches these particular things on television.  Well, when the economy tanked several years ago, the golf industry (which was already slightly on the decline) took a pretty good hit.  All of a sudden spending $80 on a round or $10,000 on a membership didn’t quite look so appealing anymore.  Nor did that $400 driver.  Now, a few years later, enter reality.

Recently, I’ve started to notice more golf-related television advertisements popping up on other channels and during sporting events outside of golf.  For instance, in watching some of the NCAA Tournament games over the past week, I’ve seen advertisements for Golfsmith and Callaway.  Finally, maybe some of the industry marketing heads are realizing that there are more golfers other than the few who live and breathe the sport.  Take me for instance.  I love to play golf.  Don’t really care to watch it.  Almost never turn on The Golf Channel.  But guess what I do – I purchase golf equipment and accessories.  But no one advertises to me…or any of the other millions of other golfers like me who play the game for fun but nothing else.  Well, maybe that’s finally changing.

However, the problem still lies in what is being advertised.  I mean, they are finally putting products on channels outside of golf, but what they continue to push is the high-end, expensive stuff that most of us hacks are not going to purchase.  It’s great that Callaway is advertising during the Elite 8, but they’re still pushing the $400-$500 driver.  I mean, really?  That’s like if Mercedes was to only advertise the S-class and never put an add out for any of the less expensive models in their lineup.  Or more realistically for most of us…if Chevrolet was only advertising a $60,000 Corvette, but never advertised the $17,000 Cruze, which is the 10th most popular selling car in the United States.  Any salesman is taught to upsell.  You don’t get people in the door by showing the most expensive product all the time.  You get people in the door by showing a good value, and upselling from there.  It’s Salesman 101!

But at least they are on the right track.  People other that the hardcore golfers need to know what’s available.  After all, there are millions more weekend hacks like me out on the course than there are scratch golfers.  We are willing to spend our hard-earned money also.  We may not be in the market for a $500 driver, but that doesn’t mean we’re not willing to plunk down two or three bills at a time.  And guess what….the first company that advertises something realistic to me has the best chance of getting my business.

A Fresh Entry To Golf Video Games

March 24, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 2 Comments

Until recently, I was still somewhat of a gamer, mainly sports games for the PlayStation.  I always enjoyed the Madden franchise.  My kids got me into the Call of Duty games (MW2 is still the best of them in my opinion).  Even last year I purchased a couple of non-sports games including The Last of Us, which just might be the best video game I’ve ever played.  Golf games were always something I was hot and cold on.  What I mean is, I would buy every Madden that came out, but I wouldn’t do that with any golf games such as Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf.  But that may be about to change…

The last golf game I purchased was for the Nintendo Wii.  The idea that I can use the controller like it was a golf club rather than just pushing buttons and moving a joystick was a no-brainer to me.  But after that…I saw no real need to purchase any more golf games.  I mean, the next logical step was to simply go to the range or get out on the course.  But in skimming through one of my kids gaming magazines, I came across a small column about a new golf game coming out this spring simply titled The Golf Club from HB Studios.

What interests me about The Golf Club (http://thegolfclubgame.com), besides that it’s visually pretty stunning, is the ability to design your own courses from the ground up.  Modify an existing course or even sculpt the land any way you’d like!  Don’t like where a potential water hazard lies?  Fill it in and add some grass and trees.  And the attention to details is certainly there.  Take a look at the game play video (http://thegolfclubgame.com/2014/01/11/gameplay-video/) to get an idea what I’m talking about.  Even further…the detail that goes into the wildlife is amazing.  And as if that’s not enough, after designing your own course, you can host your own tournaments online!

After reading up and checking out the website, this one may have already won me over.  I’m hoping a release such as this gets the proper marketing that it deserves.  And who knows…a game like this could breathe some new life and renewed interest into the younger generation of potential golfers.  After all, they probably wouldn’t be designing their own courses without getting out an playing a few to start.  Seems like a logical first step.
