It’s Monday and I’m On The Golf Course

It’s a nice feeling when you get to say “It’s Monday and I’m not at work.”  Everyone hates Mondays.  There’s a reason it’s not called “Blue Tuesday.”  No one gets a “Case of the Thursdays.”  No, we all start feeling that way about Mondays, usually, on Sunday mornings.  But when you have that Monday off from work, even though you have to go in on Tuesday, it somehow just doesn’t seem nearly as bad, does it?  But do you know what’s even better than being out of work on Monday?  Being on the golf course on Monday.

There’s been a few times where I’ve skipped out on work to play golf, and most times it’s been on a Monday.  And although I’ve included Wednesdays and Fridays as well, there’s nothing quite as liberating as standing on the first tee and saying to yourself “It’s Monday, and not only am I not at work, but I’m playing golf.”

So that leads me to some questions.  I began to wonder what is the most popular day for golfers to play hooky from work and hit the links.  But believe it or not, it seems there has been no clear research done on the subject.  But in my research, I’ve learned a couple of things.  For starters, it seems most golfers prefer to play on Saturdays vs. Sundays.  Not sure why as, again, no clear reasons are given.  However, if other golfers are anything like me, at least late in the season, I’ve mentioned how once football season starts my golf season comes to an abrupt end, or at least gets a change in schedule.  But that only explains from September on.  What about earlier in the season?  I have no answers.

Secondly, there is no real information about which days golfers will miss work most often to play golf.  Out of all of my research, strangely enough, I seemed to come across Tuesday quite often.  Really?  Tuesday?  I don’t think I’ve ever taken a random Tuesday off for any reason, let alone golf.  But that seemed to be the trend.

Anyway, my point is, at the time you are reading this, It’s Monday and I will not be at work.  Better yet, it’s Monday and not only am I not at work, but I’m playing golf.  So a question for all…when you’re going to skip out of work for a day to play golf, what day do you choose to take off?  Monday?  Friday?  Tuesday?!  I guess as long as you’re playing golf, it doesn’t really matter, does it?

Getting Together To Watch Some Golf

So regular season football has been on for two weeks now, and for two weeks I’ve had a few buddies come over to watch the games with me.  Our faces are being stuffed with pizza, wings and chips.  Beers are being guzzled.  Ooh’s and aah’s spread throughout the room after big hits and great catches.  Football season is in full swing and I love it.

It’s all of this that makes me realize what that one thing is that’s missing from golf that keeps me from having the guys over to watch a round – everything. 

A long time ago I wondered the reason my buddies and I get together to watch football, along with the occasional baseball and basketball games, but we never do for golf, even though we all enjoy and play the game.  But I’m thinking that sometime in the next few months, I may try to have a golf get together.  But a few dilemmas exist.

1. It’s going to be limited to only certain months of the year.  Think about it, if the weather is nice enough, we’re going to be playing golf, not watching it.  It’s the same reason that, despite there being a PGA Tour stop only fifteen minutes from my house, I’ve only attended it three times.  If the weather is nice enough to wander around a golf course, then I’m going to wander a golf course with my clubs in tow. 

2. As mentioned before in the linked post above…it’s boring.  Let’s face it, watching golf on TV is just not very exciting.  “Hey guys, want to come by my place Sunday and watch the sun move across the sky?”  Yeah, that’ll be a blast.  “Hey man, I just painted my garage.  Why don’t you head on over and we can watch it dry together?”  If I was to actually ask either of these questions to my buddies, do you know what the response would be?  “Thanks but no thanks dude…I’d rather watch a golf tournament.”

3. How do you plan ahead for it?  Do you just pick a time and say come over then?  What if it’s the final round and you’re only interested in one particular golfer?  How much of that golfer do you really get to see?  Let’s go to 13.  Now back to 7.  We’re going to head over to 17 now.  We end up watching a bunch of practice swings before we see eleven seconds of real action…if you can really call it that.

You know, this idea is actually beginning to start sounding bad.  I don’t want to have the guys come over and be bored.  None of us want to sit and watch golf when we could be playing instead.  And honestly, it just seems hard to plan for.  So if I’m going to do it, it looks like it’s going to have to be a final round, which means a Sunday.  It’s going to have to be in the cold weather, or else we’ll be playing.  So that leaves a Sunday in the winter. And that, my friends, is football time.  So it looks like my idea is going to have to be put on the shelf.  Oh well, maybe one of our rounds will be rained out.   Then there may be some time to watch golf.

From Greens To Gridirons

This is my favorite time of year. The days are getting cooler and more comfortable. The nights are becoming, what I refer to as, “sleeping weather.” Soon, the leaves will be blazing with the foliage of another beautiful Connecticut autumn. It doesn’t get any better than spending a few hours out on the course on a Saturday morning in September or October. But not Sunday! Why not Sunday? Well, becaue of another reason this is my favorite time of year. It’s football season!

Since I began playing golf, I try not to let much get in the way of being on the course. Sometimes I can’t help it. Things happen. I can’t control the weather. And with my wife being a photographer, sometimes her appointments, sessions or weddings get in the way. But hey, it’s better for her to be making us money, than for me to be spending it, right? But the one thing that I will always allow to get in the way of golf is the NFL. I will put away my putter in favor of my Patriots.

I have long been a fan of football. Ever since I was just a little kid and my dad would keep me up at night to watch Monday Night Football. Nothing has changed since then. As a matter of fact, I find myself doing the same thing with my boys now. The minute the Super Bowl ends, I long for September to come around again. I want to spend my Sundays lounging in front of the TV with a beer, eating chips and wings. I’ll play golf on Sunday, but I have to be home by 1:00.

However, as much as I love football and look forward to the start of the season, I guess it is a bittersweet feeling as well. Because when the football season is just starting up, that means golf season is winding down. So I begin to reflect on another season of golf. I look back on another season in which I didn’t get to play nearly as much as I would have liked. I don’t really reflect on my performance all that much. For me, it’s more about quantity than quality. I think back on some of my favorite rounds. I look back and appreciate playing a course I’ve never played before, or one I haven’t visited in a few years. I try to remember the good rounds and forget the bad. There’s usually not a whole lot of good rounds for me to remember!

But along with the disappointing feeling of another golf season coming to an end, is the feeling of knowing I am also entering my favorite part of the golf season! Often times, we will try to save some of the best courses for last. Courses we know have the best views of the changing leaves. The prettiest courses in autumn. There’s nothing like standing at the top of an elevated par-3, hitting your ball into a sea of reds, oranges and yellows, followed up by searching for the ball in the woods while the fallen leaves crunch beneath your Foot-Joys. How about playing a course with a few holes that wind around an orchard right when the apples are in season. There’s nothing like eating an apple picked right off the tree. And it’s even better when I can simply drive my golf cart right up to the tree, and pick out the best one I can find. Now that’s great golf.

So let’s all enjoy these last few weeks of the season. Forget your score for a while. Don’t try so hard. Don’t take it so serious. Enjoy the beautiful weather and comfortable temperatures. And if we’re lucky enough to have that “golf weather” last deep into the year, then let’s just enjoy the fact that we’re out on the course at all! Just not on Sundays after 1:00.
