Dressing for Golf in the Bitter Cold

Who Plays Golf in the Bitter Cold? I guess I do…or at least I have. That photo above proves it. That was last November and I remember it well: The course (Fenwick in Connecticut) is right on the water (Long Island Sound) and it was pretty damn cold – low 40’s (4 to 6 degrees Celsius) with fairly gusty winds (which made it feel at or below freezing).

You can easily spot me because I’m wearing shorts. SHORTS! What was I thinking? I was freezing! But in the coziness of my bedroom that morning, wearing shorts seems like a good idea. After all, I was trying to layer: I had a thermal long-sleeve base-layer on, with a quarter-zip sweater over that. I even had a winter hat on. OK, so I knew my legs would be cold but what I underestimated was that my upper body would be pretty cold too.

Anyway, now that the cold weather has returned to much of the U.S., I’m considering how I could do things differently this year (aside from not playing in the cold at all). The trick to golfing in cold weather has always been the balance between keeping relatively warm while not sacrificing the mobility needed for a normal swing. For my round at Fenwick last fall, I failed. I was too cold to effectively produce a fluid swing!

For starters, long pants would have helped (and I purchased a pair of long johns to wear under my pants this year too). But I really think I needed a heavier thermal base-layer shirt (and still wore the quarter-zip sweater). I could have tired a fleece (like Tom did) but most fleece pullovers don’t stop wind and the bulkiness could hinder your swing.

I should also invest in a pair of winter golf gloves since your hands are among the first to be affected by the cold. I remember years ago we were playing in the late fall somewhere and the proshop guy gave us Hot Hands hand warmers. While those are good in theory (and they did stat warm for most of our round), it wasn’t very practical to hold them in your hands all the time (in golf, you’ve always got either your club, ball or the wheel of the cart in your hands).

Now that I’m thinking this through, I guess the hat is the only thing I got right from last year. So for this year, the hat stays and I will add long johns and long pants; winter golf gloves; and a heavier thermal base-layer shirt. Of course, after it’s all said and done, how many rounds can I expect to get in before the first major snowfall ends golf till spring?

In any event, if you do decide to venture out in the bitter cold to play golf this season, remember to dress warm, but avoid bulkiness that could affect your swing (and take comfort in knowing that you probably won’t be the only nut out there)!

And just to give you an example of the windy conditions at Fenwick from that day last November, below is a video of Stinky Golfer Tom teeing-off on a par 3. What’s great about this clip though is if you listen closely at the end, you can hear his ball knock-off one of the million-dollar waterfront homes on the course!

I Hate Golfing In The Cold Weather…Don’t I?

Is golfing in freezing weather worth it?

I’ve mentioned plenty of times that I hate golfing in the cold weather.  So why do I do it to myself?  I guess it’s simply because I enjoy playing.  But is it worth it?  I find myself asking that exact question throughout the round each time.  You know when your playing partner shows up and says “Who’s idea was this anyway?” and it was his…it’s going to be a long day.

That exact scenario happened at my last round.  My playing partner calls me the day before and asks if I have time to play nine the following day.  Knowing the temperature is supposed to be cool with some clouds and wind, for some reason I agree to go anyway.  It’s not for roughly 24 more hours that I would regret that decision.  I learned then that I don’t love golf as much as I love warmth.

I show up first and head inside to pay our fees and grab a cart.  My partner shows up and utters the “Who’s idea…” line, to which I respond “Yours, a#$%ole!”  But it’s not until we’re standing on the first tee when I really notice the bite of the cold…and the wind sure isn’t helping!  But it only gets worse as we begin moving in the cart.  By the time we hit the second tee, I’m thinking that we’re still close enough to head back to the clubhouse, quit our round and go grab some breakfast.  But we trudge on…through nine holes of cold temperatures, wind and cloudy skies blocking out the warmth of the sunlight.

After the round I can look back and honestly say I enjoyed myself…except for the cold.  I honestly don’t know why I do it to myself.  I don’t know why anyone does.  There’s nothing enjoyable about standing outside in 40-something degree temperatures.  There’s nothing fun about driving a golf cart through the cold whipping winds.  You can’t have fun during your round when you’re constantly waiting for it to end.  The funny thing is, I know all of this going in.  But somehow, someway, I end up back out on the course anyway.  Maybe I do love golf more than I admit to…

Swing ’til you’re happy!

ColdFusion Gives Reason to Freeze Your Balls

March 5, 2014 | By Greg D'Andrea | Leave a Comment

IMG_2072This winter has been unreal. Here in the northeastern part of the U.S., we’ve been hit with snow storm after snow storm. Even now in early March, the temps are still frigid and the snow is still on the ground. So I guess it shouldn’t surprise you that my balls are freezing.

Literally.

Of course, I’m talking about my golf balls. A few years ago, I actually wrote about why it’s not a good idea to put your golf balls in the freezer. And for 99.9% of balls out there, that’s true – the colder it gets, the more distance you lose.

But now, a company in South Carolina has designed a golf ball that reaches its maximum performance when the temps dip below 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15.5 degrees Celsius). The ColdFusion golf ball touts:

“Golf is not always played in perfect weather. Finally, you have a golf ball that outperforms other balls in less than ideal conditions. When the temperature drops and your regular ball stops preforming, switch to ColdFusion to enhance your game.”

Fitted with a cold powered core and an elastic lonomer cover, the ColdFusion golf ball is said to “compress in extreme conditions” while still providing a “soft feel and control.” All that’s required is cold storage – yes, you read that right – you must keep the ball cold before your round and as long as it’s chilly out on the course, feel free to play your ColdFusion balls!

IMG_3793Now I know what some of you might be thinking: Who’s out on the course in the ice and snow? But remember, the temps only need to be below 60 degrees. I actually played two rounds this past fall with the temps below that (one in the 50s and even one in the 40s – see photo at right – boy could I have used ColdFusion that day)! In addition, there are many portions of the southern U.S. where golf is playable year-round – as long as you’re willing to brave 40- and 50-degree weather. For those locales, the ColdFusion ball is a perfect fit.

Now I have to admit, living up here in New England, I haven’t gotten a chance to test-out the balls the good folks over at ColdFusion sent me (after all, there’s still several inches of snow on the ground)! But as you can see from the photo at the top of this post, they are ready to go as soon as the snow is gone!

But that doesn’t mean someone else can’t test them out in the meantime! Two lucky fans will each win a sleeve of three ColdFusion golf balls to try for themselves! All you have to do to enter is head on over to our Facebook page and tell us why you’re deserving in the comments of the wall post “ColdFusion Golf Gives Reason to Freeze Your Balls” – that’s it! We’ll choose two random winners next week.

Good luck and stay warm…except for your balls!

What’s The Draw Of Winter Golf?

December 16, 2013 | By Chris Chirico | 2 Comments

Do you prefer cold weather golf? (Photo by James Quinn)

As I’ve said several times, I have this rule (which I broke earlier this year) that I don’t play golf when the temperature drops below 50 degrees.  And now that we’ve had our first major snowstorm of the winter this past weekend, then I’m going to go out on a limb and say there’s not going to be some crazy heat wave that will get me back out on the course before the spring.  Although, the same can’t be said for everyone.  No, there are some who will hit the links at every opportunity, no matter the weather.

Want to see something crazy?  Just go to your favorite search engine and look up “Winter golf.”  When I did it, I mostly expected to find info on winter golf vacations to more tropical climates…and I did.  However, I also found a lot more than that.  I found information on how winter golf can be enjoyed, where you can purchase winter golf accessories such as gloves, the rules of winter golf, practicing your swing in the winter, special offers for golf courses in the northern portions of the country and plenty more!  Who new there was such a market for winter golf?

For me, there’s no chance.  But I guess there are plenty of people who are willing to push on through the weather.  I just have a few questions, starting with…why?  Do you love the sport that much that you are willing to freeze your behind off just to play?  Or are you just crazy?  I love playing golf.  But at the same time, I also love playing golf in comfort.  I don’t want to play in the freezing cold, just as much as I don’t want to play in the brutal heat.

I guess I’ll wrap it up with one last bit of curiosity.  If there’s snow anywhere on the course, do you use yellow or orange balls?  And if so, does it help?  Because I’ll tell you, once a ball lands inside the snow, it doesn’t matter if it glows as bright as the sun…it’s gone.  Do you take a drop?  Be honest.

Swing ’til you’re happy!

Post-Golf Season…Season.

October 25, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

golfbag sledFear not my lost and wandering golf souls for this great game has not completely migrated to the warmer climates. The golf gods have brought forth desirable news that can lift the heaviest of hearts. This winter when the greens beckon us like moths to a street light we can respond “Hell mother***in’ yeah, I’m playing! I don’t care if it’s only 15 degrees outside…”  Well, maybe not so enthusiastically but you get the point.

Through this wonderful research tool called Google, I was able to find some local tracks that will be open in the winter. A couple courses feature an “inside nine”, which are the nine closest holes to the clubhouse and some are wide open. How cool is that? The downside…be prepared to walk and yes it will be cold. That being said, you should probably avoid being on the very short list of people that have been frostbitten playing golf.

What to wear, what to wear…The whole layer thing might be the way to go if you don’t mind lugging around extra stuff. Maybe some warm golfing jumpers ideal for winter. We might want to stay away from that goose down parka. Yes they are quite toasty, but if you want to be able to grip the club with both hands – leave it home. Oh, don’t forget proper footwear and this includes socks. Remember…frostbite bad.

So, this post-golf season season will be a chance for me to make good on my pre-golf season plan to play more this year. Hopefully, the weather will permit a few outings. However it goes down, I’m glad to know that my golf season isn’t entirely over. There’s still a chance to get out there and play. Now where’s my ball warmer…?

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!
