5 Reasons Golf is Hard

Look, I get it – golf is hard. But for many, winter represents a time to work on improving our games for the season ahead. And although we all have good intentions, we typically fall short of our goals.

We hit into a net or simulator; practice our chipping and putting; read books and articles to tweak our swings; buy new (and supposedly better) equipment; and maybe even take a lesson or two from the local pro. But how much of that really helps once we’re back out on the course? Well, if you’re like most golfers, it doesn’t help much.

But don’t fret, because there are good reasons why next season won’t be much different than this season…at least in terms of your score (see below). Keep in mind these 5 reasons are not intended to help your game as much as they are intended to help you put into perspective your relationship with the game.

  1. Golf requires a fair-amount of athletic ability. Contrary to what many non-golfers believe, the golf swing is actually a complex series of muscle movements that must be timed perfectly. This not only requires said muscles (both upper- and lower-body) to flex in an unrestricted manner, but also necessitates sharp hand-eye coordination. It’s fairly obvious (as with most sports) that many folks simply do not possess the strength and/or coordination needed to be truly good at the game.
  2. Golf requires a fair-amount of mental ability. As most new golfers realize fairly quickly, a good part of the game is mental. In fact, there’s probably nearly as many books dedicated to the mental-side of golf than those dedicated to swing mechanics. The one trait all great golfers have in common (more so than how perfect their swing is) is how cool they can be under pressure. It’s this unwavering calm that helps them sink a 6-foot putt when millions are on the line and millions are watching. We weekenders have trouble making a 6-foot putt when a few bucks are on the line and three people are watching.
  3. Golf requires a fair-amount of practice. Six hours a day – that’s how much time the average aspiring golfer practices to perfect their skills. And keep in mind, this is already after they’ve recognized they have the athletic and mental abilities necessary. How realistic is this for weekend golfers? It’s not realistic at all for me – I’m lucky to get out and play a few times a month, let alone find additional time to practice! And this leads us to…
  4. Golf requires a fair-amount of money. How much money have you spent on lessons, books, equipment and endless buckets of range balls over the years? Imagine quitting your job and doing the aforementioned for 6 hours a day – would you be able to afford it? I imagine many of us would not.
  5. Golf requires consistent results. So you have the athletic ability; the mental ability; and are able to fund and find the practice time. Let’s face it, you’re a good golfer – probably even scratch. But can you play well consistently? The best golfers (like those on tour vs. say, your club pro) have figured out how to put up consistent results day-in and day-out – week-in and week-out – year-in and year-out. I can’t figure out how to be consistent within the same hole! I hit a great drive and then flub my approach. I’ll chip it close, but then miss the 5-footer for par. It’s the story of my (and many others) life on the course. But you shouldn’t let this get you down because…

Even though this isn’t the most encouraging list for average golfers, that wasn’t the point. The point was to help you understand that this game – from the standpoint of the recreational player – isn’t supposed to be about playing well. It’s supposed to be about enjoyment – regardless of the final number on your scorecard.

The reality is it’s so easy to get frustrated with this game. But when you take a look at what it takes to really play this game well, one has to recognize the ridiculousness of getting frustrated at all.

For those aspiring golfers who have the talent and time, I say go for it – follow your dream because there are so very few great golfers out there. But for the rest of us, let’s appreciate this game for our reasons: Fun, sport, relaxation, camaraderie, exercise – recreation! Golf is a game, you should have fun playing it.

A couple months back we took a look at Rukket Sports’ Chipping Net & Range Marker Target. This time around I got to break out the big dog and smash it into their Rukket Haack Golf Net.

We can thank Rukket Sports and college golf coach Chris Haack for spawning this wonderful creation. A portable, lightweight, very well made (wouldn’t expect anything less) golf net perfect for a little backyard swing session.

Whether you grip n’ rip like a pro or like you got two left hands, this ball catcher is key to keeping you loose and moving when you’re off the course. Don’t let the picture fool you. This net weighs in at 10ft H x 7ft W x 3ft D. Couple that with a quick set up and break down and it’s a no-brainer.

I know what you’re thinking, a golf coach named Haack. Let me tell you, this guy has turned out some Tour winners like, oh I don’t know, Bubba Watson. He must be doing something right and so should you.

Most Golfers are Consistently Inconsistent

stinkygolfercrossingStatistically, my average score has stayed pretty much the same over the past 20 years. Why? Because I’m consistently inconsistent. The problem of inconsistency afflicts nearly every golf hack out there and as a result, we don’t really improve our games much – at least not without a good amount of practice and/or lessons.

My handicap has been around an 18 since I started keeping track back in the mid-90’s. Sure I may have a decent round every once in a while, but I’ll still have a wretched round thrown in there too.

Many times, I’m inconsistent within a round! Take this past Saturday for example; I parred 3 holes on the front but also took two 9’s! Two of them!! I finished with a 52. Meanwhile, I caught fire on the back – parring 3 more holes and even dropping a 20-foot putt for bird! And no nines (or 8’s) either!  So I shot 42 on the back, which made a 94 for the full 18-hole round. Which, when you think about it, is pretty in-line with my 18 handicap. You see? I’m consistently inconsistent.

Typically during a round, one part of my game is “on” while another part is “off.” Today I can putt but not drive. Tomorrow I can hit it off the tee but my chipping has gone to hell…It seems like I can never put it all together. Saturday, my irons were terrible on the front but then “something” happened and they improved on the back – leading to my 42. That “something” is a frustrating anomaly better left to discuss on another day.

How about this: You hit an awesome drive (best one of the round) only to flub your shot from the fairway. Happens to me all the time – especially on par 5’s where I need a good drive to put me in good position to make the green in regulation. Of course, instead of that happening, my inconsistency causes me to knock my second shot down ultimately leading to a double-bogey seven.

What also kills me is the inconsistency of the same shot back-to-back. Let’s say you hit one off the tee OB and decide to hit another. Nine times out of ten, that second shot will be straight down the middle. Why couldn’t you have done that the first time?!? This is why golfers invented the Mulligan.

So, we average golfers are consistently inconsistent. But what are we going to do about it?

Well, unless you’re ready to practice 10 hours a week and/or plunk-down tons of cash on lessons from a pro, there’s probably not much you can do about it. Gimmicks and gadgets don’t work; books and magazine articles are helpful but not really practical when you have to translate the lesson on the page to your swing on the course; and buying new equipment rarely solves anything (unless your clubs are actually falling apart).

So where does that leave us? Well, for many of us (who have jobs, families and other responsibilities) it leaves us right back where we started: Being consistently inconsistent. But that’s OK! If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it 1,000 times – Golf isn’t just about playing well (if that were the case, most of us would have quit a long time ago).

It’s also about camaraderie; being out in nature; taking the time to do something you love! If you happen to play well that day, fantastic! If not – will you regret playing at all? Of course not. Chances are even if you did play wretchedly, there was something positive you will remember – a long putt perhaps, or a great drive? Consistently inconsistent or not, I love playing this game.

And that’s all that really matters.
