Most Golfers are Consistently Inconsistent

stinkygolfercrossingStatistically, my average score has stayed pretty much the same over the past 20 years. Why? Because I’m consistently inconsistent. The problem of inconsistency afflicts nearly every golf hack out there and as a result, we don’t really improve our games much – at least not without a good amount of practice and/or lessons.

My handicap has been around an 18 since I started keeping track back in the mid-90’s. Sure I may have a decent round every once in a while, but I’ll still have a wretched round thrown in there too.

Many times, I’m inconsistent within a round! Take this past Saturday for example; I parred 3 holes on the front but also took two 9’s! Two of them!! I finished with a 52. Meanwhile, I caught fire on the back – parring 3 more holes and even dropping a 20-foot putt for bird! And no nines (or 8’s) either!  So I shot 42 on the back, which made a 94 for the full 18-hole round. Which, when you think about it, is pretty in-line with my 18 handicap. You see? I’m consistently inconsistent.

Typically during a round, one part of my game is “on” while another part is “off.” Today I can putt but not drive. Tomorrow I can hit it off the tee but my chipping has gone to hell…It seems like I can never put it all together. Saturday, my irons were terrible on the front but then “something” happened and they improved on the back – leading to my 42. That “something” is a frustrating anomaly better left to discuss on another day.

How about this: You hit an awesome drive (best one of the round) only to flub your shot from the fairway. Happens to me all the time – especially on par 5’s where I need a good drive to put me in good position to make the green in regulation. Of course, instead of that happening, my inconsistency causes me to knock my second shot down ultimately leading to a double-bogey seven.

What also kills me is the inconsistency of the same shot back-to-back. Let’s say you hit one off the tee OB and decide to hit another. Nine times out of ten, that second shot will be straight down the middle. Why couldn’t you have done that the first time?!? This is why golfers invented the Mulligan.

So, we average golfers are consistently inconsistent. But what are we going to do about it?

Well, unless you’re ready to practice 10 hours a week and/or plunk-down tons of cash on lessons from a pro, there’s probably not much you can do about it. Gimmicks and gadgets don’t work; books and magazine articles are helpful but not really practical when you have to translate the lesson on the page to your swing on the course; and buying new equipment rarely solves anything (unless your clubs are actually falling apart).

So where does that leave us? Well, for many of us (who have jobs, families and other responsibilities) it leaves us right back where we started: Being consistently inconsistent. But that’s OK! If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it 1,000 times – Golf isn’t just about playing well (if that were the case, most of us would have quit a long time ago).

It’s also about camaraderie; being out in nature; taking the time to do something you love! If you happen to play well that day, fantastic! If not – will you regret playing at all? Of course not. Chances are even if you did play wretchedly, there was something positive you will remember – a long putt perhaps, or a great drive? Consistently inconsistent or not, I love playing this game.

And that’s all that really matters.

Golf Therapy 101

I mentioned in a recent post about the need for all non-pro golfers to take “I Stink at Golf” therapy – and I was being serious. Addressing some of your golfing problems will go a long way in helping your game.

But you don’t need to make an appointment with a shrink – no sir. Let me help you by posing some common golf problems and providing candid, life-changing advice!

Problem: I can’t hit the driver.
Advice: Yes you can. It may go straight only 10% of the time, but you can hit it. In fact, when you really get into one, it feels awesome. Well, that’s the feeling we want to hold onto – even if it only happens once a round. If you never take your driver out of your bag (or worse, if you’re like me and you went driverless for several years) you will never get that awesome feeling. Hey – it’s better to feel awesome once a round than never at all.

Problem: I’m inconsistent.
Advice: Of course you are – everyone is. Even pros are not consistent 100% of the time. The reality is something will always be off – If you’re hitting the driver decent, your irons will fail you. It’s going to happen – if you could put it all together most of the time, you’d be on tour. Accept inconsistency as a part of the game and play on.

Problem: I should play better than I do.
Advice: Bull shit. Your level of play is based on two things: Ability and effort. And your ability will only take you so far before you have to start putting in effort – and that’s usually when we start saying things like “I should play better than I do.” Could the real reason be that we’re all lazy? (See this post I penned last year).

Problem: But I can’t shoot anywhere near par.
Advice: You’re not alone. In fact, you’re in the majority. The best answer I’ve seen (which cites the reputable NGF) is this: A whopping 95% of golfers can’t break 80! More than 75% can’t break 90 and nearly 50% can’t even break 100!! So even if you can’t break 100, you have half the golfers of the world out there to help keep you company!

Don’t feel so bad now, do you? See, putting things in perspective like this really helps you go out and shoot 110 with a smile on your face – and let’s face it – enjoyment is what this game is all about!

Stinky Golfer Greg’s been playing wretched golf for more than 20 years and has come to terms with the fact that he stinks. Of course, in no way, shape or form does this make him qualified to give phycological advice. But then again, it’s probably more effective than if he were giving actual swing advice.

A Consistent Golf Swing is an Oxymoron

I was in a groove for a few holes this past weekend. Have you ever gotten into one of those grooves where you feel like everything with your golf swing is clicking?

I felt super comfortable as I roped a drive down the middle of the fairway. One of the tell-tale signs of a good swing (for me anyway) is I’m not falling all over myself after my follow-through.

On this particular swing, my balance was perfect and the result of my shot was also…well, perfect. It all clicked again on my approach shot – smooth and balanced. I putted-out for par and continued to play the next few holes in “the zone.”

But eventually, something happened between holes. Or maybe it was as I bent over to put the tee in the ground. Who knows? But my swing was no longer fluid. I was uncomfortable just standing there on the tee-box. But I brushed it aside and swung…and then watched my shot duck-hook into the woods on the left.

Miraculously, I only took a bogie on the hole, but something was definitely off – I could feel it. On the next hole, I knocked my 5-iron down from the fairway – a 50-yard worm-burner. But again, I only suffered a bogie.

I remember telling my golf buddies that my game was hanging on by a mere thread. I felt as if at any moment those bogies could turn into doubles and triples – I felt as though my swing had deteriorated to the point where I could legitimately dislocate my shoulder on a swing – that’s how uncomfortable I felt!

The sad thing is, I just described my typical golf game. I play a few holes like a champ and a few like a golf newbie and a few somewhere in the middle of both. The key for me is limiting the damage when I play like I’m holding a club for the first time.

But the most frustrating part is I never know what goes wrong or when it’s going to happen! I don’t feel like I’m doing anything different – but something must be different!

I’ve come to realize that having a consistent golf swing is an oxymoron. No one can have a consistent golf swing forever – it’s not a question of if you will hit a bad shot, but rather when. The best golfers are the ones who can limit the damage when they do have a mishit.

And that’s what fortunately happened to me this past weekend – I was able to limit the doubles and triples and ended up playing decent golf (or what equates to decent golf for me).

But as for what goes wrong with my swing – why it changes…That’s as ambiguous as it was my first season playing. Is it mechanical? Is it mental? Is it both (probably)? Can I get better? Sure – If I practice enough, I can probably stay “in the zone” longer, but that’s the thing with golf – even the best players have trouble keeping it together (both physically and mentally) all the time.

My advice to you is don’t worry about it! Play golf and have fun – no matter what swing shows up on any particular tee-box.
