Throw, Throw, Throw your Club like an A-Hole on the Green…

December 8, 2010 | By Greg D'Andrea | 2 Comments

…Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily yell and be obscene. Everybody! Throw, throw, throw your club…

Truly skilled golfers can make their clubs fly like javelins...
Truly skilled golfers can make their clubs fly like javelins…

I can’t tell you how many clubs I’ve seen go flying across the golf course in my lifetime. I’ve been guilty myself of tossing a club after a wretched shot – though I’ll typically throw it towards the base of my golf bag (it releases the anger, yet there’s no need for me to walk 30 yards out of my way to retrieve it).

I have one golfing buddy who will throw a golf club at least once a round – and he doesn’t do it for amusement either – he’s genuinely so angry at himself that he’ll let it fly like Peyton tossing one from mid-field into the end zone.

When my fellow stinky golfers and I first started playing with him, we’d all laugh out loud (much to his chagrin) while watching his 7-iron float down the fairway. One time we had to make a human chain so we could retrieve his club from a pond! But then the amusement began to wear off. The problem was he’d remain angry and it would keep him from enjoying the rest of his round.

For a time, we would just chuckle under our breath when he’d let the war sticks soar, in hopes he wouldn’t get more angry from our laughter. But now? Now it’s just kind of annoying. I want to say: “Come on man, it’s only a game.” Ah, but those words are like fingernails on a chalkboard to someone like him. He’s a good guy, but takes golf (in my opinion) way too seriously. And there are plenty of others just like him.

What is it about this game that brings out so much anger? I guess one possibility is the competitive nature of sports in general. As I mentioned above, I’ve thrown a few clubs in my day, but I don’t think I was unapproachable afterwards. I would quickly snap out of it by the time I bent down to pick up my club. But the competitiveness in some people won’t let them forget so easily.

Hey, getting angry at yourself after a terrible shot (or after a series of terrible shots) is understandable. But you need to quickly put it behind you. Golf is a calm and patient game – if you don’t embody those qualities out on the course, you may be forever frustrated with this sport.

So if you’re a frequent club tosser, keep in mind what you’re projecting about your personality to your playing partners. Are they laughing on the outside, but shaking their heads at you on the inside?

PS: In no way do I condone club throwing. And my apologies if “Row, Row, Row your Boat” is stuck in your head the rest of the day like it was for me yesterday after I wrote this.

If The PGA Rules Allow It, Then It’s Not Cheating

I don’t know how much more clear it can possibly be. The rules say it’s OK….so who’s to say someone is doing wrong? Phil Mickelson used a club that is perfectly legal and within the rules. Can anyone please explain to me how this is cheating? Besides the obvious “within the rules” argument, I have numerous problems with this whole issue.

Problem #1 – Is it true a club that is over 20 years old provides an advantage over the equipment these guys are using today?! With all of the technology, research and development these club manufacturers put into their products these days, I find it incredibly amusing that a club which is practically an antique provides an advantage! If this is the case, then why the hell am I at my local golf shop checking out brand new sets of clubs, about to drop way too much bank, when the clubs I’ve been using for the past ten years may be better?!

Problem #2 – The fact that almost any club is banned from the tour is ridiculous enough. I mean for starters, these guys are using clubs that are custom fit to their exact specifications. And I don’t mean just length and weight. They are engineered around that particular golfer. These are clubs that neither you or I will ever have the opportunity to own. “But that club provides too much spin….waaaahhh…waaaahhh…..waaaahhh.” Shutup. You have a club head the size of a watermelon. The shaft is made of something currently being used on the International Space Station. You’ve worked with the best coaches, pros and trainers your whole life. But you’re worried that someone else’s club spins the ball more? Again….shutup.

Problem #3 – The focus on Lefty. If I read it correctly, Hunter Mahan, Brad Adamonis and John Daly also used these clubs. Did they cheat? Why is Scott McCarron not calling them out? Do they not matter? Is it OK if they cheat? Or is McCarron only mad that the current best player on the tour is “cheating?” Shutup.

Problem #4 – Scott McCarron. I don’t know the first thing about him, but to quote Joe Pesci from My Cousin Vinny…”I’m tru wit dis guy.” Really, Scott McCarron, who are you to call out Lefty for anything? Especially when what he did is within the rules! How can you call him a cheater? I’ll tell you what…when you win more tournaments in your career than Phil wins in one year…then you can accuse. When you get yourself ranked higher than #92 on the money list (compared to Phil’s #3 for 2009)…then you can accuse. When someone actually does something outside of the rules, thus it actually is cheating…then you can accuse. When you actually earn yourself some face-time with your play and not with your mouth…then you can accuse. Until then, shut up.

I’m willing to admit that if a club (or any piece of equipment) provides an unfair advantage, then a review of the rules must be done. But until then, if the club is allowed, then it’s OK with me and should be OK with everyone else also. If it’s legal, then every player has the opportunity to do the same. Whether they take advantage or not is their choice. It’s like a baseball player using a maple bat. It provides an advantage because it’s a harder wood and will obviously drive the ball farther and faster. It’s kind of a crappy advantage, but it’s within the rules. Therefore, it’s not cheating.

So until the rules change and say it is not allowed, let’s give it a rest.

Hooking On The Golf Course (And I Don’t Mean My Ball)…

January 15, 2010 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

320px-Wiki-prostituteThis is great! All this extra time to go and dig up great golf stories in the off-season. You know, now that the whole Tiger debacle has finally quieted down a bit, I figured I would revisit the world’s oldest profession and it’s run-in’s with golf.

Check this out, in October of ’09, 36-year-old Melanie Kozik was arrested for “willing to engage in prostitution and maintaining a brothel.” Here’s the kicker, she offered (wink, wink) “Golf Lessons” on Craigslist as the ploy. Kozik, who had previously admitted to prostitution, stated she made $1,500 a week disguising golf lessons as prostitution. That’s it…are you f*$%#ing kidding me?!?! $1,500 a week to sell your ass? Come on Mel, if you applied your entrepreneurial skills to a legit biz you could have made that legally.

Moving on to Prairie Village, Kansas, two women got arrested for running a prostitution ring that involved using a church’s parking lot and a golf course. Really girls? A church’s parking lot? The story goes on to say that the girls would use the golf course as a place to dance for- and recruit new clients. I guess the “19th” hole has a whole new meaning. Oh! ba-dum!

Back in ’02 at Hidden Valley Golf Club (please save the salad dressing jokes) two of the course managers and a tournament organizer were sentenced to house arrest for having some prostitutes do their thing at a golf tournament. The tournament cost about 2 fazools ($200 for those that never saw Donnie Brasco) with about 160 players. Funny part was that a bunch of players didn’t even bother to bring their clubs!

Officials reported that over a dozen prostitutes and strippers, including one that was 16, set up tents and…wait a minute…they set up tents? Dude, that’s friggin’ hysterical! “Hey guys, how about you come inside and sink your putz…?” or even better, they had signs advertising their services. Like what? “Come on in to get your shaft fitted?”

Until the next time…may your balls always find the hole.
