The Push For 9 Hole Rounds

August 25, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

USGA_Play9Many golf purists see 9 holes as an incomplete round. I kind of get their point. After all, does playing 2 quarters constitute as a basketball or football game? If we played 4.5 innings, is that a baseball game? No, but there are factors involved.

If we break it down and look at this from a participatory view, we must include the elements that are important to us; the participants. When we think about heading out to the golf course for a round, the two main concerns for most are time and money. It’s no secret golf costs a few bucks to play and takes the most time out of any other recreational sport activity.

A recent report by NGF (National Golf Foundation) shows a decline over the past two years in returning or former golfers with a surprising gain in the beginners category. NGF has also done some research into the whole 9-hole thing. Their findings were that the shorter rounds appeal to many beginners and those that don’t have the time or money to play 18. This seems pretty obvious but should not be overlooked.

As with anything, we must adapt in order to survive. That being said, golf’s governing bodies see this trend and have already instituted plans to address this. The biggest being USGA’s Play 9 Campaign. Granted their Play 9 day has already passed (July 23), but the residual effects should hopefully ripple through the golf community and get dormant golfers out there, even if it’s a trip to the driving range.

As always, our sentiment is to just get to out there and play, whatever it may be. 18 holes, 9 holes, driving range or putting in your living room – enjoy the game!

Golf Needs A Human Touch

August 22, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

"2 Golfers" - photo by Greg D'Andrea; GolfStinks, LLC; Copyright 2013Over the last 20 years or so I’ve noticed technology has developed at exponential rates. Yes, that is an obvious statement but often overlooked. For example, I graduated from high school 20 years ago and I can recall only one person in my graduating class that had a cell phone. Things are pretty different these days, no? And that’s only 20 years ago.

Interaction between people is declining and everything has an app. You’re lost and need directions, there’s an app. You need to do some banking, there’s an app. You and your spouse want to have a baby, there’ an app. Ok, maybe not so much the baby but you get my point. However, it’s good to know that there are still activities we can do that actually involve human interaction. Golf being one.

When it comes to learning, playing or teaching golf, technology has it’s role but it is secondary. Although there are many companies out there that are selling or promoting some golf gadget to better our game, nothing beats human assistance. Golf is too complex for an app to tell you how to play better. Granted, there are apps to help with your golf game but there is a human at the other end giving advice.

For many, golf is something passed on from a family member or close friend. It is something we share with others. When we think of golf, we usually associate it with being on the course with our buddies. There’s more of an organic sentiment rather than a technological one. Let’s keep it that way.

My Wife’s First Time

August 15, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 2 Comments

Have you ever played golf at night?
Have you ever played golf at night?

It was a beautiful August night. A light breeze, clear sky and not an ounce of humidity. We paid our greens fees and…wait…you know we’re talking about my wife’s first time GOLFING, right? Come on, get your head out of the gutter. This is a family-friendly site people.

After the past 7 years we’ve been together I had no idea she never went golfing. She’s been to the range before but never hacked up a track. I figured why not do something different for the first time – night golf! We have a local place here that features an executive par 3 under the lights which was perfect for her. Trust me, it’s one of those places that if you played it during the day you would be wondering why you were even there.

I must say though, the place did let her use a set of clubs for free which was very nice of them. Here’s where the irony began. I was concerned she was going to hold up the group behind us because of mis-hits and whatnot that I think I jinxed myself. It ended up that I was spraying all over the place and she kept it straight…go figure.

The important thing is that her first experience was a good one and I think she might have caught the bug. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing yet. Especially if she thinks I’ll be paying for her every time. Regardless, considering golf has been losing players I’ve made it a point to try and introduce more folks to this game we love.

Be A Better Golfer

August 8, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

golf holeAll my life I was always told that practice makes perfect. If you want to be good at something you have to really work hard and put in the time. Whether it was sports, a job or whatever. There’s no easy way.

Or is there? Let’s take golf for example. It’s a hard nut to crack man! In order to get better we need to invest a lot of time and money. Who has that anymore? Regardless, we still want to be a better golfer.

So, here lies the question; How do we become a better golfer without practicing? Simple. Make the game easier. Just like Taylormade’s CEO Mark King suggests; You take a standard golf hole cup and expand it almost 4 times it’s original size and voilà…you just became a better golfer.

Boy, that was easy but I’m not sold on this yet though. A 15 inch golf cup, to me, seems like it belongs to a toddlers first golf set. This will obviously lower our scores and make putting a lot easier but it still doesn’t feel right. Maybe it’s too drastic of a change…but I do want to lower my score.

The Current State of Golf Suggests Now’s the Time for Deals!

August 1, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

golf saleLooking at some recent research results by NGF (National Golf Foundation) and paying attention to sports media or media in general, there has been a downward trend in golf participation as well as media coverage. I’m pretty sure anyone involved in or a fan of golf has probably noticed (especially with our own most recent posts, including the Dick’s layoffs and pondering if golf is a dying sport in general). The bottom line is golf is in a slump.

So the question is how do we get out of this slump? I’m pretty sure it’s cyclical just like everything else. I also believe it is a multi-faceted equation. The factors that make golf rise in popularity could be a young new superstar that sweeps the nation. It could be Hollywood lending a hand or perhaps even a political figure.

All of these factors do help but it also comes down to money. Has the game gotten too expensive to stink at it? Obviously as the popularity goes up so do the prices and vice versa. Considering golf seems to be in a lull at the moment. Now is the time to buy!

Checking online there are some amazing deals out there. Sites such as BigDgolf.com show some super deals. This is what golf needs. A good ol’ sale to kick-start the passion. Hey, if I got a super deal on some golf stuff, I’d want to use it ASAP. So, go get out there, find a deal, and hit the course!
