Golf Pros Dicked Over By Dick’s

July 25, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 2 Comments

dicksIt’s no secret our country and perhaps 85% or better of the rest of the world is suffering from a down economy. Considering the situation, most turn to basic financial survival instincts and resort to cutting back spending by starting with the luxuries. Unfortunately golf tends to fall into this category.

As a matter of fact, Dick’s Sporting Goods recently laid off around 560 golf pros from their stores (in case you didn’t know, Dick’s employed actual PGA pros at their stores, up until this week that is, to distinguish themselves from an online outlet). Their reasoning for the mass cannings? According to a story by ESPN, Dick’s blames the economy, less people playing, too many products flooding the market and a downward trend in their golf equipment sales.

After hearing of this, we connected with someone (a golf pro who shall remain anonymous) that just happen to be one of the Dick’s casualties this week. Here’s what he had to say:

1. How do you feel Dick’s handled the situation?

“I thought they could have changed our role before they laid all of us off. They still sell equipment that many customers seek advice on. Which ball should I play? What loft is a sand wedge? As it was, I was already one of two people to cover an entire floor. I carried more kayaks down than golf clubs at times. Tennis was given to golf to cover and sell as well. So in my opinion, since your gonna staff it anyways, why not someone who knows what they’re doing? The company strives for a customer service number – who better to service people but a golf professional. I think they should have looked at some of their processes to save money. For example, each week the regional manager would have a conference call with corp[orate], then they would have a conference call with the district managers, then they would have a call with store managers who relay the information to the dept manager, who has an hourly associate do the task. Seems like a big waste of corp[orate] dollars to me.”

2. Dick’s attributed the layoffs to the game’s dwindling popularity – were you able to witness any slow-down at the store?

“I was at the driving range on a Wednesday afternoon and just about all the bays were full. I couldn’t get a tee time because the local course was booked. I think people are still playing. While I was there, everyday a steady flow of people came through the store. In my opinion, the rule restrictions out on clubs years ago changed the market. While the companies all claim that the new models are better etc., in most peoples eyes it wasn’t much better than the clubs they purchase a couple of years ago. If they did like the new models, most buyers realized that the price would be half in 6 months. They should have given the pros more say in what sells. For years I begged them to send me wide shoes. One style was available in wide in the store. So just about every Friday, someone would come in looking for shoes for the weekend and left with nothing.”

Hmmmm. So now that we have (kind of) heard both sides to the story, I almost forgot to mention another reason that Dick’s used as part of justifying their layoffs: The decline of Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods?!?! I mean I kind of get it but it’s a tough sell to say part of the reason a pro lost their job is due to the decline of Tiger Woods. Regardless, we want to wish all those involved a quick return to the job they love.

So, how do we turn this negative into a positive? I like to refer to Warren Buffet’s theory of “Buy when there’s blood in the streets.” Obviously this refers to the calculated purchasing of stocks when everyone is selling, but relating this theory to golf, now is a good time to get in.

Many golf clubs, associations and instructors are dropping their prices to attract more golfers back. So if you’re looking for those golf lessons or club to join, now might be a good time to do so. Hey, it worked for Warren Buffet…

GolfStinks is Celebrating Our Independence

July 4, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

golfcart july 4The 4th of July is upon us and with that we must celebrate! Some of us will go to the beach, some will have cook-outs and some of us will really celebrate Independence Day by getting married (yes, as many of you are reading this, I will be bidding adieu to my own independence – just kidding honey)!

That being said, (and seeing as the entire GolfStinks crew will be attending my ceremony) we’re taking the day off from blogging!

But if you’re still looking for something to read related to both independence and golf, check out Stinky Golfer Greg’s post: The Declaration of Golf Independence (and also the “You Might Also Like…” section below).

Have a great 4th and please be safe!

Pimp My Golf Cart: TV Edition

June 27, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

Yes, I’m pretty sure we’re well aware that pimpin’ ain’t easy. This is why we resort to another form of pimping (that of which is legal and…you know, it’s kind of funny to be discussing pimping and golf in the same post).

Moving on, this installment is focused on those TV shows most of us grew up on. Some of you younger hacks might not recognize these golf carts and no, there isn’t an app to help you. So, once again we pay homage to the hard work and creativity of these fine rides. Enjoy!

Golfcart Flintstones
If I had to guess, I’d say Fred and the gang prefer Pebble Beach…ba dum!
Golfcart general lee 2
After a long week of outrunning Rosco P. Coltrane, the good ol’ boys like to enjoy a nice quiet round at Hazzard CC.
Golfcart Knight Rider
If Kitt could help Michael on the course like he did in the show, the Hoff would be on the tour instead of singing his way through Germany.
Golfcart Mystery machine
“Zoinks Scoob, I left my putter home!” “Ruh roh!”
Golfcart Batman
Holy Triple Bogey Batman!

Lost Golf Clubs & Supposed Insider Trading

June 20, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

Every once in a while I like to see what’s going on in the world of golf that doesn’t always relate to the actual game. Sometimes you get to a real good story ala Tiger Woods and his problem…where I still fail to see where the problem is. Joking! Regardless, it’s interesting to see that although some of these tour pros can be famous they still have regular joe problems.

Leading off is a rather funny tidbit of how Rory McIlroy departed Newark International Airport for the Irish Open only to land without his clubs. Somewhere between Newark, NJ and Dublin, Ireland his clubs magically separated from him. I can go on but I think his tweets to United says it all.

Hey @united landed in Dublin yesterday morning from Newark and still no golf clubs… Sort of need them this week… Can someone help!?

And finally…

Re-@united with my clubs! pic.twitter.com/TRs46rFtnO

Next in line, and I must say, I was in shock when I heard Phil Mickelson could have been tied to an insider trading investigation. No way! Lefty? Philly Mick? I don’t believe it. He comes off too good of a person. Not that I know him personally but he definitely seems that way. Granted this might not be breaking news but its definitely something new to me and quite scandalous for the golf world. Apparently, there are stories out freeing good ol’ Phil from these nasty allegations. Hopefully, it works out for you Phil…by the way I got a hot stock for ya’!

Golf & Handicaps

June 13, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 2 Comments

ghin cardLet me start by saying this is my opinion. Now that that’s out of the way we can continue. I was never one to record my scores for handicap purposes. A long time ago I heard something about golf handicaps that stayed with me ever since. When asked about his handicap, an older gentleman once said “High school varsity is high school varsity…tour pros are tour pros.”

What is the purpose of a handicap? To compete against someone better than you on equal grounds? I have an idea, play someone at your level! If you consistently shoot mid 80’s, play someone that consistently shoots mid 80’s. Any other sport that has an amateur rec league has a tier system of some sort to separate players into their appropriate skill levels.

I have never seen a men’s, women’s, co-ed or beer league use a handicap system. They don’t sit there and say “Ok, Chico’s Bail Bonds will start with 5 runs today against Vito’s Waste Removal because they stink.” Why else would you need a handicap, right? Hey, I’ll be the first to tell you I stink at golf.

Jokes aside, I tend to believe the bigger the handicap the less accurate it is. My theory is if you have a 25 handicap the chances of you scoring worse are better than someone with let’s say a 5 handicap. The 5 handicap is a pretty consistent golfer and his fluctuation percentage in scores between rounds will be lower than a less consistent 25 handicap. You follow?

In other words, a better golfer will be more consistent and should play against other golfers at their respective caliber. Now, if we’re just playing for fun then we can throw all this handicap stuff out the window and enjoy the round. Works for me!
