Golf Needs A Human Touch

August 22, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

"2 Golfers" - photo by Greg D'Andrea; GolfStinks, LLC; Copyright 2013Over the last 20 years or so I’ve noticed technology has developed at exponential rates. Yes, that is an obvious statement but often overlooked. For example, I graduated from high school 20 years ago and I can recall only one person in my graduating class that had a cell phone. Things are pretty different these days, no? And that’s only 20 years ago.

Interaction between people is declining and everything has an app. You’re lost and need directions, there’s an app. You need to do some banking, there’s an app. You and your spouse want to have a baby, there’ an app. Ok, maybe not so much the baby but you get my point. However, it’s good to know that there are still activities we can do that actually involve human interaction. Golf being one.

When it comes to learning, playing or teaching golf, technology has it’s role but it is secondary. Although there are many companies out there that are selling or promoting some golf gadget to better our game, nothing beats human assistance. Golf is too complex for an app to tell you how to play better. Granted, there are apps to help with your golf game but there is a human at the other end giving advice.

For many, golf is something passed on from a family member or close friend. It is something we share with others. When we think of golf, we usually associate it with being on the course with our buddies. There’s more of an organic sentiment rather than a technological one. Let’s keep it that way.

Find Golfers And Play Now

March 25, 2011 | By Pete Girotto | 2 Comments

How cool would it be if there was an app to link up with other golfers that are available to play right now? I find myself looking for golf buddies because sometimes playing solo just doesn’t cut it. I mean, who else will witness that 9-iron in for eagle when playing by yourself? In my case, who will witness that uncanny boomerang action spin (known to all as a bad slice) that sends the ball two fairways over?

The developers over at needagolfer.com have put together an app for the Android system that can connect golfers based on certain criteria like location, skill level and handicap. Here’s what they say:

“Find A Golfer is a free, simple to use Android application that gives you options when you think you’ve run out. This social golfing experiment connects anonymous golfers and matches them based on location and skill level. It’s incredibly easy to find a nearby or local golfer with your handicap, and even easier to contact them using our private, secure, app to app messaging service.

Find A Golfer has features galore. In addition to a social network-style feed of golfer status updates, Find A Golfer features a simple golf course finder. Tweak your search radius and you’ll instantly be able to call up dozens of nearby courses, or get driving directions. Don’t like the golfer you just found and played with? Leave a rating and some feedback on his profile, so other golfers know the guy lied about his handicap.”

After firing up the app, the main screen appears with a simple and easy to use layout. This cut and dry approach is key, for me at least, I can search courses or golfers in my area using the gps function on my phone. And with the ability to change my search radius I can open myself up to a whole new slew of courses and golfers ready to hack up the track.

Good job with the app fellas!
Download it here or on the Android market.

Holy Golf CrAPP!

Are apps the future of golf gadgets?

Is it me or is everything slowly being taken over by an app? I recently got my paws on a new Droid cell phone and instantly hit the “App Market”. What the hay, I enjoy the game of golf. Why not search for golf app’s? I fire the four letter word inquiry off into that mobile virtual data bank and BAM…the anxiety and disorientation begins to set in.

I am now looking at an infinite list of golf apps with no clue as to which ones are good, cool or won’t mess with my phone. I guess I could google them but that’s just another set of subjective opinions and we all know the deal with that. So, I figure filtering the results to “golf GPS” would be a little easier…mmmm…not really.

“Ok, so this golf GPS app has a one star rating but it looks good and it’s free!” I say to myself. “Wait, I can’t have a one star app on my new Droid! My friends will laugh at me…” As idiotic as that sounds, it actually crossed my mind. It’s like we’ll be on the course and everyone in the foursome will vie for that Alpha golf GPS app position. You know what, if I buy that $20 GPS app I’m sure I’ll be top dog of the golf GPS app kingdom.

What the f@$# am I saying!?!?!? I really don’t need a golf app to show me distance when I can’t make the shot even if I’m on the 100 yard marker and know it’s an easy pitch all day. I got it! I’ll download a golf swing app to help my swing so I can download the GPS app to know the distance so I can download a putting app to putt better. While I’m at it, I’ll download the brain app so I don’t have to use mine. Maybe I should have went with an iPhone. :o)

Apple takes Golf into the 21st Century

Ready for tons of cool golf-related apps? (photo by Intel Free Press / CC BY 2.0)

With the announcement of the new Apple iPad yesterday, it’s obvious my brain is going to be fed by more and more electronic sources – and this includes stuff about golf.

Now you can read your favorite golf magazines right on the iPad and take it with you to the doctor’s, while traveling, or even on the course. It sounds crazy, doesn’t it? But this tech-revolution has already begun. It’s rare in other sports to use technology while playing the game, but that has now become a reality with golf.

Golf course GPS systems have been slowly growing in popularity over the last decade, albeit to a rather specific group of technophiles who also golf (I’ve yet to play with someone who actually uses one). But now, rather than having to buy a separate, bulky device, you can download any golf-related GPS app (at a fraction of the cost, I might add) right to your iPhone (a device that is extremely mainstream and still growing in popularity). Here’s a thorough review that looks at two of these apps.

Meanwhile, there’s also golf apps to help track your handicap; keep your scores; improve and analyze your swing; and estimate yardage by using the iPhone’s built-in camera! There’s even a non-golf app that tells you the current wind speed, which Golf Blogger in the UK suggests you use for golf. Of course I haven’t even mentioned all the golf games you can play on your mobile devices. Perhaps the next generation iPhone will have a retractable divot-repair tool and an Apple logo on the back that can double as a removable ball marker.

I haven’t been immune either: I recently downloaded the new USGA Rules of Golf app to my iPhone. I used to carry an outdated copy of the rules in my golf bag, and would thumb-through the pages frantically looking for a ruling before the group behind us began hitting drives past our foursome. No longer. The USGA Rules app is extremely easy to navigate around and find what you’re looking for.

Perhaps most paradoxically though, golf has historically been a game that people play to escape the cubicle- and power cord-lined world they exist within. And to this end, many, I’m sure, will refrain from mixing gadgets with greens. But for many others, iPhones and the like have become personal caddies on the course – guiding us through the holes with digital precision. Encouragingly, for those whom fit the former profile, when you see me staring at my phone by that lateral water hazard, be thankful I’m not fumbling through the pages of my old rule book instead!
