Live Your Vicarious (Golf) Life Through This Guy…

Is this the next Senior Tour star? (photo by Pete Sheffield / CC BY 2.0)

Back when most of us men were just little boys, when asked what we wanted to be when we grew up, we had generally pretty similar answers.  But no matter what our first choice was, at some point the professional athlete was mixed in there, probably just before or after fireman.  We wanted to be football players and baseball players.  We watched our sports heroes on TV, and we wanted to be just like them.  But at some point in our lives, we realized those dreams are just a bit unrealistic, and we settled on something a little more within our grasp.

That, however, does not mean we’ve given up on everything.  There are some of us who have not quite accepted that yet.  There are plenty of thirty- and forty-something’s who are still holding out hope that they too one day can make it on the Senior PGA Tour, or, at least one of the smaller tours.  Sounds silly, right?  Well, what about those of us who have not only dreamed it, but have made it, or are making it happen?  Meet Rashean Mathis.

If you’re an NFL fan, you may know Rashean Mathis is a cornerback for the Detroit Lions.  You may know that he has 31 career interceptions and that he, even at 34 years old, is still one of the better players at his position in the league.  But what you may not know is, despite making almost $40 million dollars in his career, he is already looking at his next profession after the NFL – professional golf.

See, Rashean is an avid golfer, but for only six or seven months of the year (the NFL off-season).  But despite not playing full time, he is a 4-handicap.  So he is considering, after retiring from the NFL, getting a coach and going all out for a year to attempt to become better than scratch.  His ultimate goal?  To play on the Senior Tour.

And it doesn’t stop there.  Rashean has a son as well who he is planning to steer away from football and toward golf.  While the money is good…obviously…due to his own finger, groin and knee injuries, he knows the toll football can take on his body.  Golf on the other hand?  Good money…much less toll on the body.

I for one am pulling for Mathis.  Here’s a guy who lived-out every kid’s dream to play in the NFL.  And further, is attempting to live-out a lot of our middle-aged guy dreams to play on a PGA tour.  Who doesn’t want to live vicariously through him?  Make millions playing a sport you love.  Retire in your 30’s.  Have the money to go full-on golf for at least a year.  And possibly, once again, make lots of money playing a sport you love.  Sign me up!

Being Overrated Is Overrated

Rickie Fowler golf
Is Rickie Fowler golf’s version of Anna Kournikova? (Photo by Chris Breikss / CC BY 2.0)

So your peers think you’re overrated.  Does that matter?  What does it even mean?  And what do you care anyway?  Well everyone has seen by now, in an anonymous poll by Sports Illustrated, pro golfers voted Ricky Fowler and Ian Poulter the most overrated players on the tour.

This makes me curious.  What do you think Fowler and Poulter think of this?  Do you think it upsets them?  Do you think it angers them?  Do you think they use it as motivation?  Or do you think they just don’t pay attention?  I guess it depends from what angle you look at it.

If it were me, I would probably say that I didn’t pay attention, all the while knowing full well that I did.  And while I don’t know that it would necessarily anger me, it would frustrate me to some extent knowing that I’m working my butt off to be a good player, only for some other golfers to think I’m perceived to be better than I actually am.

From the standpoint of all the golfers on the tour who were polled, how seriously do they take this?  It’s not like this makes a bit of difference to them.  It has no real affect on the game, the tour or the sport itself other than to stir up a little conversation and maybe controversy.  But, now that I think about it, maybe that couldn’t hurt.

I guess these polls are really done for the fans though.  It does give them something to talk about, right?  And maybe even agree with.  Now I don’t follow the tour all that closely, but I have to say…I do see an awful lot of Rickie Fowler in promos and commercials considering, up until last week (nice way to respond by the way), he’s only won on the pro tour once, and that was back in 2012.  And by the way, one win does not necessarily exonerate you though.  It’s like a pro baseball player being mired in a 4 for 42 slump.  Just because he goes 3 for 4 the next game doesn’t mean he’s snapped out of it.  He’s still 7 for his last 46.

So I guess you just take these polls for what they’re worth, which is not all that much.  Are they fun to read?  Sure.  Create good conversation?  Yup.  Maybe somehow keep Rickie Fowler from turning into golf’s version of Anna Kournikova?  Now we’re talkin’…

Dummies For Golf

January 26, 2015 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

untitledLast week I was at a friends house.  On our way out, I notice a pile of books.  Right on top is a copy of Golf For Dummies.  I know my friend doesn’t golf, but the roommate does.  So I jokingly announce they should stop reading that book, to which “Why?” is the reply.  I said, “if he’s reading that book, then he must stink at golf.  And the sooner he comes to grips with the fact that he, along with everyone else out on the course, stinks….the more fun he’ll have out there.”  Not being a golfer, that statement was a bit lost on my friend.

But seeing that For Dummies book makes me think about all of the golf self-help books out there…and there are plenty!  I guess until then, I never really realized how many people read these books.  But being that there are so many, I guess there must be a pretty decent sized market for them.  Being that I have never picked up any of these books for myself, I wonder what people are looking to gain from them.

I learned the game from my current golfing buddies.  We went to the range, I borrowed some of their clubs and they taught me the basics of the swing.  After a couple of trips and when they felt I was ready, they took me out to an inexpensive, local nine-hole course.  I’ve been enjoying the game ever since.  I’ve never taken a formal lesson and never picked up a self-help book.  And I honestly feel I enjoy the game more because of it.

I’ve seen many people spend countless dollars on lessons and absurd amounts on clubs and equipment that will supposedly improve their games.  However, I’ve seen very few that have turned any of this into significantly better play.  Many are not much better than me, if at all…and I stink!

But most importantly, I can’t help but notice that these very same people are simply not having as much fun out there as I am.  Once you start sinking too much money into the game, you start to expect something more from it.  Thus, you become more easily frustrated and begin to have less fun.  For me, on the other hand, it’s just plain fun from start to finish.

If you feel you need to buy books and get magazine subscriptions to help you become a better golfer, then go for it!  I only ask that you take all of these with a grain of salt.  The sooner you come to grips with the fact that you will never be on a pro tour, the sooner you will have more fun out on the course.

Swing ’til you’re happy!

Bonding With And Without Golf

Some of the most common days for men to get together for some “bonding” are no doubt football Sundays.  This is especially true here in the northeast during this particular time of year when it’s NFL playoff time, there’s snow on the ground and the temps are hovering around the low 20’s.  Needless to say, it’s not golfing weather.

As I sit watching the playoffs with my boys, I consider the difference between football bonding time and golf bonding time.  As focused as we are on watching the games, we also use the time together to just talk.  What’s going on at school, what did they do with their friends, jokes, a new video game…anything really.  But it’s the football games that brought us together to begin with.  Now, despite that we all enjoy playing golf, getting all of us together to hang out and watch the first golf tournament of the year would likely have proven to be a bit more difficult.

In a funny way, just the opposite can be said of getting out and playing the sports we are, or could be, watching.  While there may not be any bonding time watching golf on TV, getting out on the course and playing is a different story.  In much the same way male bonding takes place while hanging out and watching the game, the same can be said while actually out on the course playing golf…and vice versa.  Heading outside to throw the ball around or playing a game of two-hand touch, while fun, doesn’t exactly spark up much good conversation.

So as much as I enjoy football, especially at playoff time, I’m also looking forward to a few months from now when golf season gets back into full swing.  When football season has been over for a couple of months, my boys and I can continue the bonding that will hopefully last our lifetimes, but continue it out on the course.  However, I’m sure the first time one of them beats me, I’ll be looking forward to football season again.

That Ever Elusive Ace

January 5, 2015 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

There are a few things on every golfers list that they would like to achieve – some of it based on skill level.  Newbies and stinky golfers, for instance, may want to break 100.  Still stinky, but maybe a little more skilled golfers, may look to break 90.  The better at this game we get, breaking 80 may become a goal.  And then the best of us amateurs eventually may push to shoot, or even break par.  But no matter the skill level, be it a PGA pro or your average, everyday hack, the old hole-in-one is an achievement that every golfer wants to check off their list one day.  So when someone gets their hole-in one, you’re happy for them.  But what about when someone gets more than one?

Gus Andreone

Has anyone heard about Gus Andreone?  Gus has been playing golf longer than most of us have been alive.  And he has a hole-in-one total that will make us all envious.  Gus has a total of eight aces since 1939.  Eight!  OK, granted, that’s a span of 75 years.  But if you do the math, that works out to one every nine or so years.  So by that math, I should be working on my second one.  But instead, in my golf career, I’ve only come pretty close once or twice.

Now, as if Gus having eight aces isn’t enough, to rub it in our faces even more…he just recorded the latest one a couple of weeks ago…at the age of 103.  How’s that feel?  A 103-year old man has now done for the eight time something that most of us, even in the primes of our careers, will never do.

On a good note, he has been playing golf for at least 75 years.  Many of us hope to live for 75 years!  He’s been playing golf for at least that long!  Maybe if I can put together a golfing lifespan even remotely close to that amount of time, I too can record at least one hole-in-one.
