Golf Club + Titanium = Danger

March 28, 2014 | By Pete Girotto | 3 Comments

sparksCheck out this scenario:

It’s a beautiful dry sunny Southern California day, a group of friends head out to a local golf course. At some point point during the round “John” takes out a titanium iron and takes a swing. Next thing you know, John’s titanium club head strikes a rock and the contact produces 3000 degree sparks igniting some nearby brush causing a massive fire.

Sound preposterous? Think again. Researchers, scientists and some other people smarter than me from UCal Irvine investigated this and found it to be true. After what was first thought to be the result of a lit cigarette butt flicked into the brush, the focus turned to some hack that hit a rock with a titanium iron…yeah , I see the connection.

Unfortunately there is more bad news, a fireman was injured while battling one of these fires. And yes there was more than one fire. I wonder if the hacks that did this are even aware of what happened. Even though this was an accident, I would probably feel extremely guilty if my less than stellar golf game caused this problem.

Knowing that my golf skills are…well…not quite skills and I have a tendency to send balls into or near the lumberyard, you best believe I checked my clubs for titanium. And amidst all this bad press for titanium coated clubs there is some good news. The fire authorities in southern California have granted those with titanium clubs permission to break the rules and improve their lie away from rocks and vegetation. Hey, any little bit helps.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!

Chip Shots: Golf Requires Total Concentration

July 5, 2012 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

So we all know that golf requires full concentration.  You have to block-out whatever distractions are around you and put 100% focus on what you need to do in order to hit the perfect shot.  But this guy is taking it to a new level.

What do you think is going through this guys head?  Is it:

A. “I’ll show him.  Put down a bogey when he knows it was a double…”

B. “Hey, no one’s paying attention to me right now.  How will they ever know this is my fourth putt?”

C.  “Revoke my membership?  Ha!  We’ll see…”

Or D.  “What fire?”

D. would certainly show the total concentration aspect.  But it’s more fun to think it’s something else.  The question is what that something else could be to keep his round going…

Cover Stories and Unhappy Endings

September 3, 2010 | By Chris Chirico | 2 Comments

FORE!
FORE!

We’ve all hit pretty bad golf shots. Admit it. We’ve sliced, shanked, hooked, flubbed and skulled our way through many rounds of 18. We’ve hit trees, wildlife, carts, sides of barns, even other golfers!

Oh well, no one’s ever gotten hurt…not seriously anyway. So we keep playing. But I remember the first time I legitimately thought I was going to see some actual damage as the result of a bad shot.

Playing down in Hilton Head, one of our FORE!some hooked his drive directly at a fairway condo. We all watched in horror, knowing exactly where the ball was headed. It could hit anywhere on the backside of that house…but it won’t. We all knew that ball’s only intention was to hit that sliding glass door. And we helplessly stared, tracking the balls flight for what seemed like hours, waiting for the inevitable sound of shattering glass. But it never came. By some minor miracle, the ball bounced off the glass and ricocheted around the deck five or six times, sounding like an episode of This Old House, before it disappeared in some tall grass, never to be seen again. A collective sigh of relief filled the tee box, and down the fairway we went.

Now had the ball actually broken that glass, while making for a great golf story, it would still pale in comparison to this guy (thanks for the link Jay). A 25 acre blaze. From the spark created by a metal club hitting a rock. Now THAT is a disastrous golf shot.

While there has been some speculation as to the truth behind this story (I, for one, believe the fire was much more likely started by a cigar or cigarette, but why would he ever admit to that?), it’s likely going to be recognized as the most disastrous golf shot, or at least one of golf’s tallest tales, of all time.

This gets me thinking about what other golf shots wound up in catastrophic results. So I need some help. What is the most unfortunate result of a golf shot you have ever hit or witnessed? Let’s even take it a step further. In the spirit Mr. California Wildfire, what is the best cover story you’ve ever heard or taken part in due to the result of an unfortunate golf shot?

So let’s hear from everyone! Oh, and by the way, if necessary…feel free to post anonymously.
