Golf Clips In The Flicks

October 13, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | Leave a Comment

Golf has been the subject of many movies.  Some of them comedies (Caddyshack, Happy Gilmore) and some more serious (The Greatest Game Ever Played, The Legend of Bagger Vance).  In each of those movies golf played a major, or at least significant role.  But it’s funny, for a game that’s always taken so seriously, I’ve noticed many films or television shows that use golf as somewhat of a comic relief.  Perhaps it’s the writers taking a bit of a shot at the seriousness of the sport?  What do I mean?  Well, here are a few examples:

How about this scene from The Walking Dead (season premiere last night!)?  In this scene from an otherwise dark and somewhat disturbing show, The Governor and one of his henchmen stand atop a makeshift wall, launching drives at aimlessly wandering zombies.  It’s a funny few seconds from an otherwise, unfunny show.  Now, did anyone watch Lost?

If so, do you remember this scene?  Again, not a funny show.  These people are trapped on a mysterious island, smoke monsters chasing them and no idea where they are or how long they’ll be there.  So what to do to let off a little steam?  Find a set of golf clubs from the plane wreckage and build a makeshift golf course.  Complete that with a fat guy and a skinny guy gyrating by the pin to distract the guy teeing off?  Now that’s how you put a smile on someone’s face.  Speaking of smiles, what about another classic, funny scene from an otherwise unfunny movie…

A great scene where a couple of FBI agents are watching Nicky (Joe Pesci) from a circling airplane only to run out of gas and are forced to land on the fairway.  As Nicky and Ace watch the agents hurry away, Nicky gives one of many great lines – “$100 whoever hits the plane.”  And while on the subject of mob movies…

Just one of many great scenes from a great show, The Sopranos.  In this one, Tony is trying to fit in with his neighbor, like a regular guy.  But on the course, he quickly realizes he is being treated as more of a circus freak than one of the guys.  So for their entertainment, he tells them a story about John Gotti, to let them know what kind of a guy he is.  It’s not exactly a funny scene out of context.  But in relation to the rest of the episode, it is.

Point here is, as I mentioned earlier, golf is often times used as some type of comic relief in otherwise serious times.  Kind of funny considering how serious many golfers take their sport.  Maybe we can all take a hint from the movies and TV and take it a little less seriously ourselves.  You’ll probably enjoy it much more!

We Need Our Golf Trips

July 21, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

thWVMELIDIHere at Golfstinks, it’s generally assumed that any special occasion is to be celebrated, at least partially, with a round of golf.  And this past weekend, the crew did it again.  This occasion was a milestone birthday…my 40th.  So some of the other stinky golfers pitched in and made a weekend out of it – golf at Lake of Isles, some casino time at Foxwoods, food, drinks, cigars…the whole package!  It was a great weekend; we played a great course, ate some fantastic food and had an all-around good time.  We discussed doing something like this more often.  Not just for a special occasion, but three or four times a year – just friends getting together, hanging out, doing something we all enjoy doing.  So it immediately begins to cross our minds – why don’t we?

Just my opinion, but to me, a round of golf is great bonding time between friends.  But a golf trip, now that’s a different story.  As we get older and our list of commitments, be it to our families or our jobs, continues to grow, the time to hit the links with our buddies becomes fewer and far between.  We no longer have the time to get out on the course every weekend, or every other weekend.  Heck, it’s not even once a month anymore.  I’ve managed to squeeze in a couple of nine-hole rounds this year, but nothing more.  So taking a weekend golf getaway can certainly be the remedy.

OK, so it’s not always convenient to get away for a weekend.  Commitments with the family and the job don’t always allow for disappearing for a couple of days.  And sure, it ain’t exactly as cheap as your regular eighteen hole round.  But if it’s only, what, twice a year?  Then how does that not make up for it?  Consider if you are at the point where you’re getting together with your buddies less than once a month to play a round.  Then one or two golf trips per season can possibly even end up saving money vs. what you were previously playing.  Further, the weekends away obviously create better memories than just heading over to your local track.  When I think back on my best golfing memories, they’ve all occurred on trips, if not specifically golf trips.

Look, if you work hard enough and dedicate as much time as you do to your job and, most importantly, to your family, then you owe it to yourself to give yourself a break.  And not for nothing, but your job and your family owe you the time to yourself as well.  Why not use that time to create more good memories for you and your friends while still holding onto something that you love, but don’t get to do nearly as often as you once did?  Take the trip…you owe it to yourself.

Know The Next Golf Tournament Winner? Wanna Bet?

March 19, 2012 | By Chris Chirico | 2 Comments

I like betting.  I can’t help it.., it’s just fun for me.  I’m not an addict.  I’m not at the casino every other night.  I haven’t lost my house or my car.  Maybe my shirt, but that’s about it.  I’ll bet on individual games, drop money into fantasy sports and, of course, the brackets going on this time of year.

The thing about betting is, it just makes the game, or whatever you’re betting on, that much more interesting.  Whether you’re betting on the NCAA Championship game, or the day your co-worker’s baby is born – it makes you care that much more about the result.

We here at golfstinks have touched on different kinds of betting in the past.  Be it betting while out on the course or creating a bracket in the hopes for a real PGA championship, we’re always looking for a way to put our hard-earned greenbacks on the line.  But let’s be honest, golf isn’t exactly a big-time sport for betting.

Now we’ve all seen the odds posted for the favorites in golf tournaments – especially the majors.  But golf doesn’t get nearly the betting action that most major sports get, be it legal or illegal.  I think a lot of that has to do with the relative anonymity of the players on the tour.  But what if you found yourself in a golf pool?  What if you were in a Vegas sports book and you saw the odds pop up for The Masters?  What would you do?  Who would you choose?  How much would you bet?

See, you can check just about anywhere for betting assistance on football or basketball – the internet, the newspaper, even the phone!  But golf?  Not so much.  However, that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.  Sites such as Golf Picks are out there to help you.

Now, if there was only a way to raise golf into the ranks of the top wager-worthy sports, we could put all of this to better use.  But I guess until the PGA recognizes the opportunity it has at a gold-mine with an actual PGA Championship, the world of golf betting will remain a lesser interesting option.

But let it be known, golfstinks will do what it can to raise interest in all things golf, including the occasional wager – on-course or off.  You can bet on it.
