The Brits Have It Right.

The British have you protected...on the golf course
The British have you protected…on the golf course

We are all well aware of how much golf equipment can cost. Yet, we still let our emotions get the best of us and proceed to snap that $100 dollar putter right over our knee. If you have never broken a club out of anger than you are probably part of a very small group of golfers that can honestly say this. As for the rest of us, talk about adding insult to injury…putting with a 7 iron sucks.

Throughout the years, I’ve compiled a mental highlight/blooper reel pertaining specifically to the damaging of golf equipment and courses.  From clubs being snapped in half to an entire bag of clubs being destroyed to even a golf cart tearing up the greens and ending up in the drink. Those little outbursts of rage can be costly. Especially, when we are responsible.

In the United Sates we are stuck like chuck when it comes to breaking stuff on the course but as the title says, the Brits have it right – enter golf club insurance. And when I say golf club, I’m referring to golf courses not just woods, irons and wedges. Companies like Aon offer GC’s in the United Kingdom an opportunity to insure their member’s sticks, carts, courses and everything else that falls in between…even terrorism. Seriously.

How cool is that? I recently went to a driving range that ran along a well traveled road. Right at the entrance sat a sign that said golfers are responsible for any damage they may cause to or on that road. No pressure…I’m glad I’m a lefty because my slice goes the other way.

Come to think of it, in the United States there is no liability on or near the course. We have to absorb the costs ourselves unless we can prove who did it. In other words, good luck. Not for nothing, this insurance thing could be a good opportunity for some insurance brokers here in the U.S.

Golf Tournaments…

September 20, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

drunk golfWell, I’m sure we have all been to a golf tourney or two. They support great causes and can be a load of fun! In my years of playing golf, I am happy to have been part of some great tournaments as well. We raised money, helped people and felt good about it.

Then there are the other golf tournaments where golf is not so high up on the to-do list that day. Recently, I played in a golf tournament that should have been a scene in the “Hangover” trilogy. It was quite the experience. Oh you know, egg sandwiches and beer before hitting the first tee. Actually, some people had finished a six pack and a couple nips by 11:00 a.m.

I missed the blatant warning signs of what the day was to entail. Using my 20/20 hindsight here’s what I missed 1) It was hosted by a local bar 2) there were no charities, causes or foundations directly involved and most importantly 3) I knew the people organizing the tournament. I guess secretly I might have had a clue…I just try not to admit it.

I wished there could have been cameras on that course. The highlight reel would have been priceless. Just to recap the day, There was a cart with its front end looking like it hit a wall at 40 mph; tire tracks in a bunch of sand traps; me almost getting run over by a run away cart; “professional dancers” serving beverages on the course; and finally, a bunch of dirty golfers with grass stains on their clothes back at the clubhouse. Wonder how all that happened…?

My Dog Ate My Clubs.

September 13, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

IMG_20130910_100807_898As a matter of fact, she ate my new clubs that I don’t even have, kind of. Now, I’ve had my current set for a number of years. They have served me well and far exceeded any expectations. This year I figured I would start looking into some new clubs and maybe trade in the old set.

One thing I did notice was a sentimental attachment to my current set. It was rather odd, I mean they are non-living inanimate objects but for some reason I struggled with the thought of trading them in. Finally, I was able to make myself understand that these clubs have performed well for me and now it’s time to let somebody else enjoy them. I shouldn’t be selfish.

Our golf season is wrapping up and with that start all the sales and discounting of the previous years equipment plus some great trade-ins too. My plan was all set and I had it figured out. In a couple months when golf is a foreign word in these parts, I would strike and snatch up a bargain.

So, how did my dog eat my new clubs, kind of? Well, enter Brownie. A female shepherd mix rescue of the Drainus Walletus species. You see, for some reason Brownie enjoys mixing gravel with her meals. She somehow sniffed out two 3/4″ gravel rocks and decided to eat them. This resulted in a trip to the vet which resulted in removing these rocks from her GI tract via surgery.

You can probably see where this is going. The money I put aside for some new clubs will now go towards my vet’s new clubs. Actually, two sets probably. In essence my dog ate my clubs…kind of. Oh well, I still have my clubs.

Where The Heck Did My Golf Season Go?

Up here in the northeast, we all know that September is one of the best times to golf. The weather is perfect and with all the kids back in school the courses tend to be more open. Unfortunately, this also means our season is winding down. Funny because it doesn’t hit you until the first signs of cold weather…like this morning…50 friggin’ degrees.

It’s inevitable, every year I go through the same roller coaster of emotions. I’m pissed because I didn’t get out as much as I wanted to and back in early spring I told myself I was going to make it a point to play more. I should have known better…between wedding plans, a new house and the fiance’s laundry list of s*** to do; when was I going to play?

Who was I fooling? Myself, that’s who. I’ll tell you what though, this winter I’m going to formulate a plan to get on the course a little more. My strategy will be to use deceit, bribery and lies. Hey it works for our elected officials.

On a positive note, I’m actually looking forward to a little fall ball. If you never had the opportunity to see the leaves change color, I would suggest an autumn golf trip to New England. Also, a lot of courses offer discounted fall greens fees for late afternoon/early evening golf. Any little bit helps.

Dusting Off My Balls

August 30, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | 2 Comments

How clean do you keep your [golf] balls?
How clean do you keep your [golf] balls?
Normally, I keep things clean and orderly. I like a clean living and work environment. Same goes when I’m on the course. If there’s a bunch of crap stuck to my spikes, the OCD takes over and I’ll spend a few minutes cleaning them off. Clubs? Forget it. They get a cleaning before and after my round.

Why is it I don’t really care about my balls…ahem…golf balls? In fact, I’ve devised some ludicrous theory that a chunk of dirt on my ball will actually slow the in flight spin therefore straightening out my slice. I know, I know, it’s ridiculous. Hey, I never said I was a physicist. But when I play with a dirty golf ball I seem to play better.

The more I think about it, the more I believe it’s mental. Really! When I wash a ball at the tee box and it’s nice and shiny my first thoughts are ” Boy, I hope I don’t send this in the lumberyard.” Similar thought process when I take a new ball out of from the sleeve. In reality it should be “I’m going to send this shiny little ball right down the fairway!”.

It’s like driving a used beat up car compared to a new one. If we get a ding or scratch on the beater we don’t care. In essence, us not caring lessens any stress we may have allowing us to perform better and with much less anxiety.  Oh, the mental tricks we play on ourselves. If a dirty ball is what it will take to play better than a dirty ball is what I will use. As a matter of fact, I will pack my balls in mud.
