The New Backyard Golf Game…Bonzi!!

June 23, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

untitledIt sometimes seems like backyard golf games are almost as popular as the game of golf itself.  I guess that’s OK though.  It gives fans of the game something golf-related to do when they can’t quite make it out to the course.  And hey, anything that keeps people interested in the game is OK with me.  But every once in a while, one comes along that does more than replace your regular round.  It’s actually a fun game to play with your friends or your kids, and may even take you back to when you were a kid chipping around your yard. That game?

Bonzi Golf!

Bonzi Golf is a very simple game, or….actually, two games.  Consisting of two small “pods,” which are basically the greens, and six foam balls concaved on one side which, when placed in certain positions, allow the ball to travel differently and simulate different course conditions.  Pretty neat, right?  Instantly, the first thing I liked about Bonzi was it’s portability.  All of the above mentioned pieces fit into a zippered and handled vinyl sleeve, no more than 20″ across and about 2″ thick.  Weight?  Roughly three or four pounds.  You can pretty much take it anywhere you’d like.  Even better, you can set it up just about anywhere you’d like as well.

For instance, me and one of my kids set up the game in my front yard.  We dropped one of the pods at our feet and tossed the second one out about 10 yards.  Then, we began chipping away.  I was surprised at how easily the foam balls actually travel and simulate a real golf ball, albeit at the as advertised 1/8 distance.  And the game also allows you to swing as you normally would.  You don’t ease up…you just swing.  Within a couple of minutes, my neighbors kids were watching us play like a mini gallery.  Then my neighbors from two doors down came wandering by asking questions such as “What are those balls made of?”  Everyone was quite interested in the game.  I have to admit, I could certainly spend some time playing around with this whenever I can’t make it out to the course, or if I’m just looking to practice my swing a bit.  And even better, my kid described it simply as “awesome.”

Everything about Bonzi is simple – scoring included.  The game is played by very simple rules, conveniently printed on the bottom of the tin containing the balls.  Toss the green out to wherever you’d like and take turns hitting your three balls at it.  Closest to the green gets a point.  If one of your balls lands on the green you get 2 points.  Lucky enough to land one in the hole?  3 points, and minus 3 for your opponent.  First one to 18 wins.  However, playing specifically by the rules is not necessary.  Playing just to simply practice or make your own rules is fine as well.

LINKS-products-grouping

Further, as I mentioned earlier, Bonzi actually offers two games.  In addition to Links, which is the game I’ve been describing, is a game called Aces which is designed more to be an indoor game.  Containing only three balls and one pod, Bonzi actually includes in it’s rules to play this game for money, which I’m all for!  Quite simply, rather than hitting your ball into a cup, you chip from the pod into the tin containing the balls.  If all three shots miss, you drop in a quarter.  First person to get a ball in the tin gets all the money.

Links and Aces can be purchased separately.  However, since Aces is simply half of Links, you really need only to purchase Links in order to play both games.  And speaking of which, you can purchase either one here.  But one lucky reader will not have to purchase anything at all.  As usual, we here at GolfStinks have one to try out and one to give away; Simply head over to our Facebook page and give this post a like.  One random winner will receive both the Links and Aces games from Bonzi Golf.  So click like and get your quarters ready!

Did Dad Golf On Father’s Day?

June 16, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

thIt’s probably not much of a stretch to figure that most of us golfing dads can’t think of many better Father’s Day gifts (within reason) than a trip out to the links.  Me included.  Whether it be playing a round with the kids, or them just giving you a vacation day from your usual fatherly duties and sending you on your way to the course.  Each year, that’s exactly what’s happened in my house.  I’d pack up the clubs with my boys, or they’d tell me to get the heck out of the house, play some golf, and either a nice home-cooked meal or reservations at one of my favorite restaurants would be awaiting me upon my return.

But this year we did things a little differently.  This year there was a new approach to the Father’s Day golf round.  This year, we didn’t play golf.  We took this Father’s Day off.  Instead, we played putt-putt golf the day before.  I slept in on Father’s Day morning.  I went out and did a few things I wanted to do, then came home and took a little nap on the couch while I watched a baseball game.  The kids woke me up when that nice home-cooked meal was ready.  I followed that by hitting the couch again waiting for game five of the NBA Finals to get underway.  Yup…I did almost nothing on Father’s Day….and it was wonderful.

Now, I’m not trying to start a new tradition here.  Just taking a well-deserved day off from everything.  Next Father’s Day…I’ll probably be back out there.  Actually, who am I kidding…I might take a day off this week and get out there to make up for not playing today!

Anyway, we here at Golfstinks really just want to take a minute to say Happy Father’s Day to all the deserving dads out there who could use a day off from their everyday lives.  If you didn’t play golf, hopefully you relaxed.  If you did play golf, hopefully you played well.  Although…what does that matter?  You were playing golf.  What better day to enjoy a day meant for you?

Do You Find Golf Relaxing?

June 9, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 4 Comments

golf-fishingI work with a guy who is one of those people that just can’t ever sit still or relax.  He’s always doing something.  He wakes up when it’s still dark outside to go to the gym, probably works a 9 1/2 to 10 hour day on average, goes home to do some kind of household project because he can’t not change things, and when he’s not doing that he’s teaching a spin class at his gym.  On the weekend, it’s more of the same.  Go, go, go – it never ends.  He doesn’t realize it, but he almost always looks stressed – like if he doesn’t do something, things will be amiss.  I recently asked him if he ever just sleeps in or if he ever simply takes the time to grab a beer, sit down and do nothing for a little while.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen a look of such confusion before that moment.

In one of the most recent conversations, a couple of us brought up some plans to go fishing over the weekend.  Again, my co-worker…totally lost.  He says “I don’t understand how you guys can go fishing.  You just sit there and…” and he imitates casting a line and reeling it in.  We all respond with “Exactly” or “Yeah, pretty much.”  But the main response was “It’s relaxing.  Just sitting by the water, maybe having a beer and just relaxing…not having to think about a thing.”  Still…that doesn’t register with him.  He responds with “That and golf.”

We all proceed to tell him that he needs to learn how to slow down and relax once in a while or he’s going to have a heart attack in a year.  He then attempts to justify it to us by explaining why he doesn’t like fishing or golf.  He says of golf, he doesn’t like the sport because he has no control over the ball.  Once he hits the ball, he has no control over what happens.  He can’t control the wind, the conditions of the course or where the ball is going to go once he hits it.  I try to explain that the better you get, the better you can control where the ball goes.  I also tell him that the conditions of the course as well as the weather are just part of the game – they can’t be controlled so you work with them.  I also try to explain that a good part of the reason I play is because I’m spending time with friends, having conversation and doing something while we’re hanging out.  It’s not just the sport itself.  My score is secondary.

He goes on to tell me that he can’t understand how the results are secondary.  When he bikes or runs, he challenges himself to beat his last time, so he tries to beat himself.  That’s relaxing to him.  I explain how that’s the same dumb logic that golfers use to try to explain why their game is so unique when, in actuality, it can be applied to any sport.  I also explain to him that when you are riding your bike or running, pushing yourself to beat a time, it is not relaxing.  It’s competition.  No one considers competition to be relaxing.  In the end, for him it comes down to control.  For a person who tries to play the “I’m not a control freak” card…we finally got him to admit that he, in fact, is.

So am I wrong here?  Or is he?  Both of us?  Neither?  My opinion is that golf is completely relaxing!  That is, as long as you’re not taking it too seriously.  But I get the idea that he wouldn’t know how to NOT take it seriously because he doesn’t know how to just relax.  I believe that unless you are playing professionally, or at least competitively, you need to take it down a notch both for the good of your sanity as well as the good of the game.  But, more importantly, some of us need to find a way to relax in general – even if it’s not while golfing.

You’re Not As Good At Golf As You Think

June 2, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

slow-play-golfer…and the way you play doesn’t help.  It’s not that everyone doesn’t have a chance to be a good golfer.  Take it from me…I’m terrible.  But even I know that if I was to really take the time to practice, take lessons and basically play as much as possible, I could be a good golfer also.  But I’m not going to do any of that stuff.  I’m going to just play when I get a chance and not turn it into more than it is.  But there are too many others who have not yet accepted that reality.

What, or who, I’m talking about is the twosome I got stuck behind during my last round of golf.  A couple of guys playing at their local nine-hole course, putzing their way around, taking their sweet time…trying as hard as they can to look like the guys on TV.  Don’t they realize they are screwing it up for everyone, and possibly hurting themselves in the process?

I’ll start with the tee box and the fairway/rough.  The longer you hover over the ball, standing as still as possible, the more you are psyching yourself out.  Think of it as a baseball player standing in the batters box.  When the pitcher takes too long to throw the ball, the batter calls for time.  Why?  It gets uncomfortable just standing there.  The same is happening to you when you’re just standing on the tee box over your ball.  Plus, you’re pissing off the people behind you.

Moving onto the green, the same problem exists here.  However, we are also treated to a few moments worth of staring down the ball from every conceivable angle.  We start behind the ball,  then we walk around to the other side to make sure it looks the same.  Then, rather than a simple kneel-down, maybe we’ll add in the occasional “lie down on the green” behind the ball.  Once again, you are psyching yourself out.  And once again, you are pissing off the people behind you.

This all wouldn’t be so bad had the end result been a good shot.  But when I watch your drive sail clear off into the woods, followed by a couple of duck hooks and a three-putt…it’s time to change your approach.  This is the time to realize that golf, for most of us, is a game – no more, no less.  It shouldn’t be taken as seriously as you take it.  You shouldn’t rush it, but you shouldn’t waste time either.  And most of all, you shouldn’t piss off the people behind you.

Make Your Memorial Day Round of Golf Matter

May 26, 2014 | By Chris Chirico | 1 Comment

imageSometimes we use golf to celebrate something.  A common tradition among us stinky golfers has been for birthdays, well…for those of us whose birthdays fall in golf season anyway.  Your birthday equals a free round of golf courtesy of the other stinky golfers.  But golf can be used for other celebrations as well.  Bachelor parties are pretty common for celebrations involving a round or two of golf as well.  Sometimes it’s for recognition – a previous job gave me the opportunity to play a course which I otherwise would have had no chance to get on, just for a “job well done.”  With that in mind, maybe using golf to recognize a veteran or current service member on a “Job well done”

With Memorial Day upon us, many people need reminding that this is not in fact National Cookout Day.  This is not a holiday invented by Kingsford or Char-Broil.  What it is, is a day to remember the men and women who paid the ultimate price while serving in the military.  As long as all of us understand that, then the cookouts, the parties and gatherings are all good.

But on this Memorial Day, why not take one of those chances to recognize a veteran or active member of the service?  You would bring your buddy out for a round of golf on his birthday, so why not celebrate Memorial Day with someone to whom this holiday matters or affects.  Sure, Memorial Day celebrates those who have fallen while Veteran’s Day recognizes all of the active or inactive military.  But showing your appreciation to a friend or family member who is serving could be a nice gesture which I’m sure would be appreciated.

A round of golf , as mentioned earlier, can be used as a form of recognition.  It’s done at the office.  It’s done on birthdays.  Why not pass that along to our veterans and service men and women?  After all, these people are sacrificing so much for you and me.  Even something as simple as a round of golf is a nice show of appreciation to people who certainly deserve it.
