Golf Spam

Is it just me, or do all of us golfers get all kinds of ridiculous golf spam email?  I’m sure that it can’t be just me.  It’s not constant – I can go a few days without getting a single email at all, spam or otherwise.  However, when I get ’em, I get ’em – to the tune of twelve to fifteen per day!  Now I just scroll through and delete these emails.  But as I’m doing this, I wonder a couple of things.  Firstly, how many of us golfers are clicking on these emails and following through so that these companies continue to think spam emails work.  And secondly, how on earth do they come up with what they think I would be interested in just by knowing I’m into golf?

So let’s start with the first question.  How many of you have received some golf spam, was actually interested in what you saw, and decided to follow through in the email?  I, for one, have never done this.  Am I missing something?  I fear that the moment I do open one of these up and click whatever link is presented to me, one of two things is going to happen.  Either my computer will self-destruct or I will instantly be hit with dozens more spam emails which will continue to fill my inbox everyday for the next several years.  Neither of those is an option I’m prepared to deal with.

As for the second option – how do they come up with what they choose to send me?  See, I understand some of the spam I get.  Betting websites, golf equipment and apparel stores, golf lessons and things like that.  But what about the rest?  Why do I get emails about weight loss programs and supplements?  How do they know I could afford to lose 25-30 pounds?  Are they going under the assumption that most of us golfers are out of shape?

OK, but what about those Rolex emails?  Do they assume that because I’m a golfer, I’m rich and I can afford to wear whatever I want?  Boy, these people have a lot to learn about me personally.  However, it does seem they are trying to help – I have been offered my Ph.D. via email.  So maybe they’re at least trying to help me get a better paying job.

I guess it’s probably the same with anyone’s email.  No matter what you do, some type of spam is going to sneak through.  It’s just funny to see the type of email I get through an email account associated with golf vs. a personal email account I may have.  As I mentioned, some of the spam I get, I understand.  But some of it is completely out of leftfield and useless.  But…it is always nice to be reminded once in a while that “Hot Russian women want you.”  Am I right?

Will Dropping A Few Pounds Drop My Golf Score?

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of many sports (or many activities for that matter) where being out-of-shape can be beneficial.  OK, there’s Sumo Wrestling.  And there are belly-flop contests.  But outside of those, I’m at a loss.  So one would think that being in good physical condition could help with any sport.  But what about golf?  In a game that really demands more of a good technique and good mechanics than it does top physical condition, does being in good shape really matter?  Well, even though the sport does require more of a mechanical skill, I just can’t see how being in good shape can’t help.

With that being said, I’m planning to find out for myself.  See, I’ve begun to realize that I’m not getting any younger.  As a matter of fact, there have even been some times where, physically, I feel older than I should.  That’s not a good feeling.  So I’ve begun to do something about it.  Recently, I’ve started exercising a bit more and eating a bit less.  It’s amazing – by simply getting a bit more active and cutting out some of the foods and drinks I’ve had, or reducing the amount of them anyway, I was able to drop thirteen pounds relatively easily.  So I’m going to keep it up and see where this takes me.

But besides the obvious health benefits, one of my hopes is that there is some parallel between my weight and my handicap – both of them dropping.  And I don’t see any reason this wouldn’t happen.  By losing weight I would think this would help to sharpen the technique for a golf swing.  If the body mass is cut down (and by that, I mean the gut shrinks) naturally you would have to figure the swing would simply become more smooth.  It doesn’t stop there though.   By dropping weight and improving my condition, I should have more energy for the round.  So that feeling of fatigue that hits at some point on the back nine should be minimized, if not eliminated altogether.

I shouldn’t be looking at this from only a golf standpoint, and I’m not.  It’s important to take care of oneself, and I’ve neglected to do it as well as I should.  But it’s never bothered me much before.  However, recently I’ve started noticing that I get tired a little faster and some formerly easy task become more of a chore.  So if this works, and I can improve my health and golf game at the same time, then why not keep up the effort?  For the time being, overall health improving – golf game is yet to be seen.  Stay tuned.

Hacking Away At Calories

Back in August of 09′, fellow Stinky Golfer Chris posted “Is Golf Exercise?” His point was that golf is supposed to be enjoyed and who cares what issues the nay-sayers have with golf not being considered “exercise.” Taking it a step further, I decided to revisit this issue and focus on the benefits golfing HAS towards a healthier lifestyle.

We all know a lot of people push golf aside as a legit form of exercise. Granted, it isn’t quite as rigorous as the P90X workout but it is definitely a way to HELP shed some excess weight. As new data surfaces and the concern for better health, diet and so on pursues, we look for different ways to keep the ol’ ticker in tip-top shape.

It seems there are new diets coming out every day such as the obvious Atkins and South Beach to the more obscure and weird ones. You know, where all you can eat is steamed cauliflower roots and drink sea weed shakes for 2 weeks. I think everyone has that one strange friend who swears by this diet they learned of from their “spiritual leader.” This is the same person who looks like he or she is 90 years old but is actually only 35.

I’ll put it this way; Losing weight equals burning more calories than you take in…period. I know because I did it. How? By raising my activity level and lowering my caloric intake via a healthier diet. So, how does this relate to golf? Easily – carry your clubs for 18 holes. If you golf a couple times a week, carry your clubs and eat a little healthier – you will lose weight.

“Well, what if I can’t carry my clubs?” Don’t worry, you still burn calories using a cart. According to Healthstatus.com‘s Calories Burned Estimator, here’s a chart estimating the calories burned by golfing with a cart and carrying your own bag broken down by body weight

Please note: This is just an estimate and should not be used in medical decisions. Duh…


Also note that this table uses 4 hours as the time to complete 18 holes based on the national average.

As you can see, golfing does in fact burn calories. Now if I couple that with the 6 or 7 hundred calories I burn sleeping…Who needs the gym?
