Golf: Whine & Wine

July 26, 2013 | By Pete Girotto | Leave a Comment

There's something about golfers and whine, er...wine.
There’s something about golfers and whine, er…wine.

It is becoming ever more popular these days. I’m sure we are all very familiar with whining and it’s relation to golf. As a matter of fact, most of us have become connoisseur’s in this area. It’s hard to imagine a round of golf without a little whine.

Speaking of, I read something interesting about these whiner’s and the wine they make. I was surprised at the list of others that have joined the likes of Greg Norman to sling some grape juice. Who would of thought Arnold Palmer would make wine. Come on Arnie, you can’t blend iced tea and lemonade with everything.

Although, that would make for a great prank on some wine snobs. Set up an elegant affair at Bay Hill. Invite these connoisseurs with the intention of  their partaking in the “Palmer Estates” Select Vintage wine tasting and they actually get an Arnold Palmer wine cooler in a fancy glass. Everybody in on the joke has to rave about it how good the swill is. It could be great for youtube. Just saying…and I said it first.

Another good one is Nick Faldo, I love the names associated with his vino. It’s like ordering something from Outback Restaurant. I’ll have the Katnook from Coonawarra. Actually Katnook is the estate name and Coonawarra is the town it’s in. In that case gimme the Kookaburra wings.

In addition to the aforementioned, David Frost; Annika; and Luke Donald have also dabbled in the vino business. I have to say that coming from a long line of wine makers in my family, I do appreciate what these golfers are doing. Especially when they tie charities in and also make a good bottle of wine that I won’t need to take out a second mortgage to buy it.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!

Defining A Golf Era.

June 22, 2012 | By Pete Girotto | 1 Comment

Following golf for the past 25 years or so has opened my eyes to many exceptional players. Unfortunately, no matter which way you cut it, a lot of these greats were lost in the shuffle. The reality is, just like other pro sports, we associate greatness with not just being at the top of your game but also with mass appeal.

From the late 90’s to about 2010 we all know golf was owned by Tiger. He was everywhere and everything golf.  There is no doubt about that. It was Tiger’s world and everyone else was living in it. Vijay, Phil and Furyk all had their chances, but couldn’t quite do it. Tiger was…ok, ok…is still a great golfer no doubt but golf is as much mental as it is physical. When his scandal went public his golf game suffered soon after. And so went an era.

What about a decade earlier when Greg Norman and Nick Faldo dominated? Why didn’t they get as much hype? Neither one was presented a $40 million dollar deal from Nike. Wouldn’t that have changed things a bit? I understand times were different then but I’m sure a deal like that would have altered the way things played out.

Going back a few more years, the last golf era I can think of was the Jack Nicklaus days. Granted I was a youngster and caught the end of his reign but you couldn’t mention golf without the name Jack Nicklaus. Looking to the future I wonder who will be next? It should be quite interesting to see especially with a young talented group to pick from.

Hit’em long…yell FORE!!!

Golf Genie is Genius

June 5, 2010 | By Greg D'Andrea | 2 Comments

GolfGenieTeetoGreenPocketGuide

We here at Golfstinks don’t typically review golf products – in fact, we tend to poke fun at all the crazy gadgets out there. So when we post a review of something, it’s because we feel it can serve some use to the average weekend golf hack.

That being said, a few weeks ago I was contacted by someone over at Golf Genie who asked me if I would be interested in receiving their product – the Tee to Green Pocket Guide. Not being able to pass up something for free, I decided to see what this pocket golf guide had to offer.

First, let me tell you this is no zany golf gadget – it’s a practical, quick reference guide to pulling-off all the different golf shots you may encounter out on the course.

A few years ago, I read a tip in a golf magazine that actually helped me (I think it may have been the only time that’s happened)! Anyway, Nick Faldo recommended creating a tiny spreadsheet listing all your club distances (along with your half-swing distances). Then print it out, laminate it and keep in your golf bag. You have no idea how much that little paper has helped me decide which club to use while out on the course – it was the best thing I ever did to improve my game.

First section of Golf Genie? Same thing. It shows the average distance for each club for both men and women (perfect for beginners), but then gives you space to write in your own distances (once you get those down to a science). Golf Genie then proceeds to breakdown the grip, swing, shot-making, chipping, putting and even bunker play and advanced shots – all neatly and clearly explained while using graphics to enhance your understanding.

I pointed out in a post recently one of the major problems with reading swing tips in a magazine: How are you supposed to remember all the stuff you read once you’re out on the golf course? Well, Golf Genie solves this problem by packing all the swing info you’ll ever need into one pocket-sized guide – each section conveniently tabbed for easy reference. What I like though is they don’t try and get too fancy on you – they just show you the basics – which are usually what you need when you’re a beginner or have been struggling with a slice or hook (it sort of clears your head, you know? Gets you thinking straight again – back to the basics).

OK, I know this is starting to sound like an infomercial now, but Golf Genie has already shaved a few stokes off my last round – seriously. I corrected my grip mid-round based on a diagram in the guide and subsequently my shots straightened out over the last few holes.

Golf Genie has found permanent residence in my golf bag – had I not received my copy gratis, I would have gladly forked-over the $15 for it. Even more affordable is the app version, which is only $5 on the Apple app store.

So yeah, Golfstinks typically avoids telling people how they can improve their game. I mean, it’s your game, who are we to audaciously think it needs improvement? But when something affordable, practical and truly helpful actually comes along, trust us…we’ll let you know.
