Lot’s of\u00a0sports fans\u00a0love college sports.\u00a0 Some love it more than pro sports, which I do not understand.\u00a0 I mean, when given the choice (especially if watching live, ticket price not being an issue), I would want to see a competitive event between the top players in the sport.\u00a0 How can you enjoy watching minor league or amateur sports more than watching the best of the best compete?\u00a0 And don’t give me the tired old “The\u00a0college kids aren’t playing\u00a0for the money.\u00a0 They’re playing or the love of the sport.”\u00a0 It’s time to stop living in the past.\u00a0 This is the NCAA…it’s all about the money from one angle or another.<\/p>\n
Let me be clear though, I do\u00a0watch college sports simply because it’s a sporting event.\u00a0 But I’ll give you an example of something I can’t stand about college sports, and being that we’re in football season, I’ll use football as an example.\u00a0 Do you want to know what stinks about college football?\u00a0 These – 76-0.\u00a0 72-0.\u00a0 54-6.\u00a0 59-13.\u00a0 77-7.\u00a0 56-0.\u00a0 70-7.\u00a0 Those are scores from the games of this past Saturday’s\u00a0AP Top-25 ranked teams.\u00a0 20 of the 25 teams played.\u00a0 Seven of them won their games by at least 40 points.\u00a0 What is enjoyable about watching a game with a final score of 76-0?\u00a0 In the history of the NFL, there has been exactly one 70+ point victory and it occurred 73 years ago!\u00a0 In college football, there were three 70-point victories just this weekend!<\/p>\n
I hate that there\u00a0are so many of these mismatched games which, in my opinion, should not even be played.\u00a0 But they are.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Money of course.\u00a0 But in the pros, the gap between the best and worst teams in the league is relatively small.\u00a0 Only a few players and a few decisions separate the\u00a0cream of the crop from the cellar dwellers.\u00a0 This is why it’s rare for a blowout of these proportions to occur and why pro sports are better all-around.\u00a0 But you know what college sport isn’t like that?\u00a0 Golf.<\/p>\n
The best part of competitive pro golf is that the difference between the top players and the lower tier players is really only a few strokes per round.\u00a0 In college, it’s not much\u00a0different.\u00a0\u00a0And with the competition being more…well…competitive, this translates to a good spectator sport.\u00a0 So why is college golf not seen anywhere on television?<\/p>\n
In this day and age, where there are literally hundreds of television channels available, how is it that a popular sport with good competition taking place on a pretty regular basis, not getting any air time?\u00a0 And when I say not any, I mean almost none!\u00a0\u00a0College golf doesn’t even get so much as a mention on sports channels or highlight shows.\u00a0\u00a0It’s even an afterthought on\u00a0the Golf Channel.<\/p>\n
The question is, why?\u00a0 It’s a college sport, which\u00a0many sports fans love.\u00a0 It’s a very competitive sport with, as in the pros,\u00a0relatively little difference between the top players and the lower tier.\u00a0 So where is the attention?\u00a0 Where are the cameras?\u00a0 Where’s the fanfare?\u00a0 You know, catching\u00a0some of these players when they’re still in college can begin to create star-power prior to the next big thing hitting the pro links.\u00a0 It seems to work for the college football and basketball players.\u00a0 Just sayin’.<\/p>\n
