{"id":2650,"date":"2013-07-29T07:00:56","date_gmt":"2013-07-29T11:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/?p=2650"},"modified":"2013-07-28T23:42:37","modified_gmt":"2013-07-29T03:42:37","slug":"golf-spam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/golf-spam.html","title":{"rendered":"Golf Spam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/holydogwater.files.wordpress.com\/2007\/05\/spam.jpg\" width=\"230\" height=\"219\" \/>Is it just me, or do all of us golfers get all kinds of ridiculous golf spam email?\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure that it can&#8217;t be just me.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s not constant &#8211; I can go a few days without getting a single email at all, spam or otherwise.\u00a0 However, when I get &#8217;em, I get &#8217;em &#8211; to the tune of twelve to fifteen per day!\u00a0 Now I just scroll through and delete these emails.\u00a0 But as I&#8217;m doing this, I wonder a couple of things.\u00a0 Firstly, how many of us golfers are clicking on these emails and following through so that these companies continue to think spam emails work.\u00a0 And secondly, how on earth do they come up with\u00a0what they think I would be interested in just by knowing I&#8217;m into golf?<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s start with the first question.\u00a0 How many of you have received some golf spam, was actually interested in what you saw, and decided to follow through in the email?\u00a0 I, for one, have never done this.\u00a0 Am I missing something?\u00a0 I fear that the moment I do open one of these up and click whatever link is presented to me, one of two things is going to happen.\u00a0 Either my computer will self-destruct or I will instantly be hit with\u00a0dozens more spam emails which will continue to fill my inbox everyday for the next several years.\u00a0 Neither of those is an option I&#8217;m prepared to deal with.<\/p>\n<p>As for the second option &#8211; how do they come up with what they\u00a0choose to send me?\u00a0 See, I\u00a0understand some of\u00a0the spam I get.\u00a0 Betting websites, golf equipment and apparel stores, golf lessons and things like that.\u00a0 But what about the rest?\u00a0 Why do I get emails about weight loss programs and supplements?\u00a0 How do they know I could afford to lose 25-30 pounds?\u00a0 Are they going under the assumption that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/is-golf-exercise.html\">most of us golfers are out of shape?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>OK, but what about those Rolex emails?\u00a0 Do they assume that <a href=\"http:\/\/golfstinks.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/does-golf-apparel-and-equipment-fuel.html\">because I&#8217;m a golfer, I&#8217;m rich<\/a>\u00a0and I can afford to wear whatever I want?\u00a0 Boy, these people have a lot to learn about me personally.\u00a0\u00a0However, it does seem they are trying to help &#8211; I have been offered my Ph.D. via email.\u00a0 So maybe they&#8217;re at least trying to help me get a better paying job.<\/p>\n<p>I guess it&#8217;s probably the same with anyone&#8217;s email.\u00a0 No matter what you do, some type of spam is going to sneak through.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just funny to see the type of email I get through an email account associated with golf vs. a personal email account I may have.\u00a0 As I mentioned, some of the spam I get, I understand.\u00a0 But some of it is completely out of leftfield and useless.\u00a0 But&#8230;it is always\u00a0nice to be reminded once in a while that &#8220;Hot Russian women want you.&#8221;\u00a0 Am I right?<\/p>\n<p>Swing &#8217;til you&#8217;re happy!<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is it just me, or do all of us golfers get all kinds of ridiculous golf spam email?\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure that it can&#8217;t be just me.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s not constant &#8211;
